Hi all, on the subject of the 50mm f1.8 am I the only one that isn’t overly impressed with this lens? It’s sharp but the focus is really noisy and relatively slow and the purple fringing (excuse my lack of the correct terminology) in bright sunlight is really bad.I am waiting for a 50mm f/1.8, have been for about 3 yearsHave been trolling Sony on social media for ages about it and their rep.

No, I don't think so - the comments above are because it has such a bad rep people want a replacement.
The Zeiss 55 and the 50/2.5 mini G have good reviews/opinions.

I am waiting for a 50mm f/1.8, have been for about 3 years
I've been thinking of selling my 55mm f1.8 and just doing without but if they do bring out a decent 50mm f1.8 I might well get one. I know they do a budget one now but I've stayed away as some have reported slow focusing and if that's the case I think it'd be pretty poor on my A7 as the 50mm macro was basically unusable on the A7.
I have been thinking of having quite a severe clear out as I have lenses I haven't used much at all, 35mm f2.8 hasn't been used since I got the 40mm f2.5 and 35, 55 and 85mm f1.8's get used very infrequently ditto the 28mm f2 and I might have used the 28-70mm about four times.

I have the 55mm and at the time I got it I thought it was the best lens I'd ever used. I compared it to my Canon 50mm f2.5 "Macro" and I thought it was better than the Canon lens at every aperture the Canon could match. I've never got over the fact that it's 55mm not 50mm though.
I have the 40mm f2.5 G and I've read that the 50mm can't quite match the 40mm for resolution and contrast but is better for CA and flare resistance. I don't know if I really see the point in having 40 and 50mm f2.5 lenses though. If a new 50mm f1.8 came alone I would think about it.

I actually forgot I bought this lens but similarly found the focus slow and noisy so just ended up not using it.

I would deffo buy a 50mm f/1.8 if one was available. Even if it was as good as the 35 f/1.8 and similar size I would get it.
Got rid of the 55 years ago. Have the 50 f/1.2 which is spectacular and the Samyang 45mm f1.8 which is fine for what it is. Would find room for a 50 f/1.8 if one was available though.
Have asked Sony for a 50 f/1.8 but while the old one continues to sell in large numbers they don’t seem interested.

A shame.
I want to keep this up as a hobby but time for photography has been limited for a few months now and I've started to look at all the little or even unused gear. I'll see it time frees up a bit as the days get longer and hopefully we get better weather.

Yup. Had one at £135 from Amazon and returned it because it's not worth even that unless you like missed focus as a feature.

It's for the A9 series that update, they're global shutter sensors so I'd not expect any problems there (I've worked extensively with sony global shutter sensor machine vision cameras).

I'm a bit surprised as even in dull light east Cleveland I can hit 1/8,000.

Yeah been using for about a year or more. No issues at all. Some of the more expensive CF-A cards are a bit faster read speed but then again they are more than twice the price.Can get two Pergear Standard 256gb CF express A cards for £128.80 delivered

Really interesting. Was just about to go for the Sony 960gb - with £100 cashback and a bit if haggling, was looking at £400. But £140 for 2x 256gb is very attractive!

I'm considering buying a lens second hand that was released early 2024. I've got two options:
Ebay seller: lots of engagement over messages, fully trust him. He bought it second hand from wex in 'as new' condition and is still the same. Comes boxed, but obviously no warranty.
Camera shop: graded 9/10, no box but comes with original front and rear caps and hood, as well as 6 month warranty. Have haggled on price to match eBay and also added in a 960gb sony card with £150 off too.
What would you do? Think it's a question of box and 'as new' vs 6 month warranty and 9/10.
Really on the fence on this one - please help me fall one way or the other!

Looks a good deal on the card, depends how much you want the 960gb card really versus two 256gb
.Buying from eBay you have 30 days to return the goods if they are not as described, if a lens has a problem I’d say it was not as described. How likely is a newish lens to develop a fault, any reports about that particular lens.

Sounds about right - when I first got my 85 f/1.4 on my A900 (base ISO 200), I found I was slightly overexposed on a bright day wide open at max shutter of 1/8000, so you're in the same sort of overall exposure as that.

Been using them for a while, no problems at all. I have the 880/400mb/s ones. Their card reader isn't great though, the card slot doesn't have a click lock and the card wobbles about a bit in the port and is not always recognised by my computer. I'm always a bit wary as my thoughts on what's considered "as new" are not always the same as others. As new means just that, you can't distinguish it from new. I've seen some lenses described "as new" adn whilst they were in great condition they weren't "as new".
Does the eBay seller have a no quibble returns policy? I've personally stopped buying used from eBay as it's too much of a gamble, I'd rather buy from a store so that I can return it if I deem it not as described, and like you say you get a 6-12 month warranty.
With regards to the card I'd question whether you need a 960GB card. I can shoot a lot of images in a day, but I'd never need a 960GB card. The other thing is a lot of people don't fill their card before formatting therefore you may only be using the same 100GB of the card over and over for example.
Thanks - on the memory card I'm just now learning the difference between G and M versions of the Sony Tough cards - I got an 160gb G with the camera, now questioning if a 960gb M card will slow things down with A1 on 30fps RAW (and also whether the Pergear cards are broadly on par with the M cards anyway). Ebay seller is happy for return for any reason on receipt and the conversation I've had gives me ample confidence.
I hadn't thought of the implications of reusing one sector of the card, is that really an issue? I went to a gig at the weekend and found shooting at 30fps really helpful when the lighting was changing - it gave me a few different versions to choose from. But I did fill that 160gb fast!

I don't know the answer to your question about using the same sector of the card, I don't see why it should be any different to using a 32gb card and using that over and over. My point was more to do with needing the 960gb capacity. If you're only going to fill half of it each time you may as well buy a card half the size and save your money.
From memory lossless raw files on the A1 are 60-70mb each, so if you say 70mb that's 13,714 images you can fit on one 960GB card. I'd question anyone that would shoot that many images in one shoot/day
If you're shooting at 30fps then you have to shoot compressed raw which is smaller still (I think 50-60mb) so you could fit even more shots on the card.

It shouldn’t reuse the same areas of the flash, solid state drives use wear levelling algorithms to avoid it and mark bytes “used” when they wear out.
In theory a larger drive will last longer as there is more capacity/over provision so the nand will last longer. In practice this hasn’t been an issue for years except in extreme cases (this is why you get different types of SD card for dashcams etc where you write a lot of data)
