the eclipse

I have a series like these taken every few minutes between first bite and maximum coverage. I find that they were all at least three stops overexposed but that was easily fixed in Lightroom. They were all taken on a Leica 100-400 zoom at 200mm (400mm equivalent on m4/3)) at 1600ISO and f5.6 with exposures of around 1/5 second, although at maximum coverage it was 1.6 second. After maximum coverage I took a few with the lens at 400mm (800mm eq) and they are unsharp and basically unusable! I'm sure there's a lesson there somewhere! Now I'm wondering what to do with them all! Can anyone recommend a simple way of doing composites?

The close ups were taken with a sigma 150-600 with 1.4 teleconverter and a K&F solar nd20.

That sequence is great. The sort of thing I guess many of us were hoping for.
 
The recent Partial Solar Eclipse down on the prom. Wasn't chancing frying the Z9 sensor so went for the kit I used last time I did this up in Cromarty in a past life. Nikon D850 and the old Nikon 300mm F/4 with x1.4TC. Worked well.

I have to admit being a bit disapppointed, the light change was just like light clouds passing.
I did play about with an older phone I have and got an interesng result :LOL:

Sony Nex3 - Homemade 3d printed adaptor, 2 black vacuum cleaner tubes (stuck to adapter with gaffer tape - I crossed fingers! Used a 3d printed plate I had made with pinhole 0.6mm stuck at the end held on with hot glue gun - light leaks covered with black tape. According to the calculations pinhole should be about 1.2mm but I only thought about a having a go at 6pm so I used what I had already made and bodged them together.

It worked quite well, very hard to actually get the sun in the shot (700mm on aps is really about 1000mm although thinking about it probably does not apply to a pinhole) only had to move it a fraction and the screen was black and it wobbled like a jelly. The aperture was around F1200 shutter speeds ranged from 1/2000 to 1/30. Shot through the bathroom window, roller blind helped stop me going blind!

Camera on a tripod, vacuum tubes propped up on an old t-shirt left resting on the window ledge left hand helped stop the wobble - a bit!

Is all this camera damage talk a bit over the top?

I'm pretty sure we've all taken landscape photos before with the sun in the frame, shining onto the sensor. And with regard to any aperture or ISO settings, surely it's the total amount of light hitting the sensor..... And if you are perfectly exposing for the sun, surely the foreground is going to be pretty under exposed.
I often wonder about this exposure to the sun. I have a 10 year old dashcam, still gives a perfect 1080p video, yet the times I have driven into the sun for many minutes, and sometimes even an hour or so, and this while the sun is still quite high and bright, as apposed to low and darker sunset. However I would not chance any of my cameras doing anything close to that.

I think shooting / recording into the sun is okay, but with the eclipse it's actually zooming in and focusing directly on the sun that could cause the problems.

It sounds silly, but it wasn't until I'd pointed my camera directly at it that I realised just how massively bright the sun is.
As an example, this is a shot I took with a shorter lens while the eclipse was still at its most total; even just showing something like 10%, the sun was still way too much for the camera to cope with:
