THE PP GAME!

Here we go - am I first:D

Played plenty with individual colours to get rid of the overly blue cast.
Lot of selective saturation, burning, sharpening & put separate colour filters on sky then inverse and put on rest. Can't think what else to do so time to stop

Well done Stormcrow!

Your big stopper may have blue'd things up but it's not nearly as bad as my Hi-Tech.

Here's a quick go from me in LR4:

- 16:9 crop
- upped the clarity a fair a whack
- tweaks to contrast, blacks, shadows and lifted exposure slightly
- strong sharpening with big mask value
- local sharpening on closest rocks & land mass & a little shadow lifting on the same brush
- substantial temp shift to yellow and little towards magenta
- top-down gradient to lower exposure, raise clarity and NR, and ironically to blue-up the sky after my initial WB correction
- bottom-up gradient to give the sea a slightly different hue
- slight use of shadow split-toning to color up the distant mountains
- slight vignette
- tweaked the tone curve

CS5 RAW..
Lens correction
Colour temp to 10000k
Recovery +15
Blacks +30
Brightness +4
Contrast +54

Photoshop
Localised sharpening 150% Radius 1.0px
Convert to grayscale
Selective layer (Mountain) Modify Curve
Selective layer (Clouds) Modify Curve
Crop

Just noticed still needs a bit of work doing, slight halo and a botch using the quick selection tool. (need a laptop with a better screen)
Need to get my eyes tested

heres mine
the hardest part is remembering what i did lol
opened in raw, incresed temp and reduced blue in the sat slider
sharpened, made 3 copies for sea, mountains, and sky
then altered sliders till i was happy with each
opened in cs
combined the 3 shots with the eraser to reveal the best from each one
some more applied a filter to increase mild saturation boost for the mountains only
reduced noise, and added slight blur for the sky only
framed
finished!

These edits are very good. I think it's clear to see the difference between my jpg and having a raw file. I'll get on with my edit soon.

Mountains_BW_edit1.jpg

I am an amateur :)

did these things (not in order)

High pass filter, Sharpening, Burning/Dodging, Nik Software Colour Efex Pro, Nik Software Dfine 2.0, Curves & Levels

My feeble effort (I hardly ever do photo editing as I mainly shoot film and not having a scanner yet makes it a bit difficult!)

elgol-1.jpg

Spot white balance on cloud, increased colour temperature to warm the image a bit, increased contrast and saturation slightly, slight tone mapping, increased vibrancy, cropped to 7:5 ratio, unsharp mask

Some really good edits and I have had a really hard job choosing one.
Even though my own edit was a B&W I have on this occasion chosen a colour version so Neil (Flying Giraffe) is the winner.

Here is my edit

uNzDK.jpg

In camera raw I de-saturated the image with the saturation slider.
I then did an exposure adjustment again in camera raw then I opened the image in Photoshop.
Next I opened the image again in camera raw and I did another adjustment opened it and layered it on top of the original then used a mask to apply the adjustment I repeated this several times to different areas of the image such as sky mountains sea etc.

quick random attempt. exposure set to -1ev, sharpened, slight increase in saturation. some DH lighting applied. duplicate layer made in photoshop, tried some extreme HDR to try and bring out the details in the rocks, especially from the mountains in the background and clouds.

Thanks, it certainly was a tricky one, I'll have a look for a suitable image when I get home tonight, thanks again.

I open RAW file in LR4.1

01. sharpening on RAW file
02. crop and straightened
03. selective saturation with brush mostly on the boat and sky
04. clarity brush on the sky at +100
05. increased highlights slightly and decrease shadows using tonecurve
06. saved for web using PSE10 and output sharpening

maybe overdid it slightly with sharpening....

In LR4:
B/W
Used the hue/sat bw sliders to adjust the colour conversions.
Gradient filtery thing to drop exposure in foreground.
Another one for the sky and another on top to darken the very top of the sky.
Clone tool to clean up 2 bits in the grass.
The painty brush tool to brighten parts of the hook or loop in the foreground.
Crop.

Might've overdone the darkness of the sky. I'll know when I take a look at it again with fresh eyes.

(I have a Canon 50D now - so I'd better go and take some raw photos)

well done everyone, tough one again, all very good, but im going to give it too Andy, the sky is a little dark, but i think it works, also like the crop too mate so i hope you`ve been out with the new camera cos we are going to need a new photo(y)

Thanks Neil. On reflection the sky is a tiny bit too dark but largely depends on what background it's put up against - against dark grey it looks fine but then against white it's too strong.

I did go for a mini photowalk on Sunday afternoon when the sun came out but the photo I've included was shot around 8pm. It's from the barrage in Penarth. It wasn't the best photo I took but I think it's got some editing potential. I've done my edit already.

I had to use the SRAW size which is around 7mp as I only had a 1MB CF card available - today my 8GB card arrived though.

Thought I'd have a go.

A few exposure changes in camera Raw.
'Spicify' in Topaz Adjust.
Reduction of saturation.
Slight crop.

Hope Topaz Adjust isn't considered as 'cheating'.

principles of dragan effect applied to it.

Now then stop name dropping - I had to look on Wiki to see what this meant :D

And well done Andrew nice edit (y)

here`s mine
basic adjustments in raw, sharpened
2 files saved, increased blue slider for sky/sea in one
adjusted for the wall in the other
opened in ps and combined images
cloned out bird, increased the pink hut and brought out more contrast in the sky
saved
done!

welsh_pink_house_finaledit2.jpg

opened as RAW CR2 and converted to DNG file in LR4.1

01. 16 x 10 crop
02. some minor sharpening
03. lens correction
04. whacked up the clarity
05. decreased blacks
06. Tone curve: increased highlights & slight shadow decrease
07. individual colour channels, increased red saturation and luminance, decrease yellow and orange sat, increase blue sat.
08. filters: filter I; Created a filter for the sky increasing saturation and clarity, with a decrease in shadows increase in highlights and darkened exposure. filter no II: for the sea only decreased saturation and slight exposure decrease.
09. cloning: killed the seagull and the annoying sign on the right side, also the area in-between the pink house and not forgetting the grey lamp-post thing on the left side. Cloned out the fisherman's water bottle on the bench as well just for fun...
10. burning and dodging mostly on the pink house.
11. Added some film grain to the image.
12. Opened in PSE10 and added white border.
13. Final resize and output sharpening, saved to jpeg.

I was going for a moody and contrasty look here..

it looks far better on a grey or black background than it does white!

Made it abit cooler temp wise
-0.12 exposure
+24 contrast
+83 highlights
+67 whites
-50 blacks
+36 clarity
+95 vibrance
-83 saturation

Thought I'd try something a bit more adventurous than normal, so...

Lot of things done (all in LR4) but essentially:

- 16:9 crop
- Converted to B&W, tweaking color mix to exaggerate contrast on wall
- Bottom-up gradient to boost clarity/contrast/sharpness of harbour wall
- Top-down gradient to darken sky and add drama
- Slightly colored the two gradients to give a two-tone effect
- Added a further coloured brush over the whole thing to show textures more
- Boosted overall clarity and whites, dropped black level
- Slight tweak to tone curve
- Highlight priority vignette (somehow I can never leave this alone!)

Well done all - great entries and tough to decide.

I'm going to pick Ben (lolage) as the winner. I like the colour tinting which gives it a moody atmosphere.

Here's my edit:

added light effects
cropped
replaced sky
straigtened horizon
added detail

As the sky is so flat the only way forward was to replace it, I had been out last night and shot the sunset off Blackpool beach, I used one of these.

1. Changed perspective of decking to flatten down, tried to centralise decking in image (left that out, it looked wierd)
2. Layer mask of foreground altered curve, lifted saturation
3. Overlaid foreground onto my sky
4. flatten image, save as Jpeg

The sky was not modified, this is as shot.

Time taken from start to finish 2min 48sec

here`s mine
sharpened and basic adjustments in raw, tone, contrast etc
replaced the sky
hdr`d the walkway
used uv topaz filter
saved

welshLAD.jpg

opened in LR4 as RAW

cropped to 16x10 ratio
lens correction used for tokina 11-16mm
converted to BW silver fx
converted to HDR
added lots and lots of film grain
made 5 x filters set to different exposures for the sky
boost to highlights in tonecurve,
slight boost to shadows,
save to jpeg and exported with sharpening for resize

I wanted to go for a grainy black and white film look

Some cool entries, going to have to pick Roberts as the winner though! That sky really makes it a great photo.

Here was my edit:
