This is Ridiculous...

no you havnt at all... thats exactly what ive been trying to express

We seem to be mixing two topics here. The first is with whether you should be able to take pictures and the second is what is then done with the pictures.

The primary topic is obviously the restriction on photography at events involving children. I have not seen a good case for not allowing parents to photograph these events. Parents who do not wish their children to be photographed or children who are 'at risk' should not participate in the event. Yes, its unfair for them but at least its unfair for a few rather than being unfair for the majority. We have bent continually as a society trying to accommodate the needs of all parts of the society but there has to be a point were we say no. Give and take? We do the giving and the minority do the taking.

With regard to subsequent use of the images and posting on the internet. The argument seems to run along the lines "But if we let you take pictures we don't know what you will do with them and you might even put them on the internet and then people would be able to see them!" It does not matter what I am going to do with them. I think the vast majority of people who take pictures at school events are doing so for their family's personal use. Some of them may put them onto Facebook. Who cares? A few more people in the world see your kids face. Reality check here - people see your kids every day

This is a bit like saying "Yes you can buy a car but we can't let you use it because some people speed and some people are really inconsiderate drivers. So, to avoid any possibility of poor driving we have decided that no one should be allowed to drive."

Anybody fancy setting up a an action group?
Parents Rebelling Against Total Stupidity

Uummhh maybe I need to rethink that one :) But that is how we are being treated.

John

You mean a Perv could see my kid too walking to school :eek::eek:

That's it - I'm keeping him in - home schooling it is

So where on earth does the 'Protection' argument come from then???

Most child abuse is within the family isn't it?

Wouldn't it be better to CRB check all parents when their kids attend a new school, then yearly thereafter, with sessions where Police randomly check home computers too for accessing or downloading sexually explicit images of kids?

I vote we ALLOW photography, but BAN parents

In 100 years from now all kids will be 'protected' - cos there won't be any humans left

Sorted

Are we not just looking at the sugarcoated topping that is 'Taking pictures of children'? why are we getting pushed away from taking pictures of our loved ones in schools and such? this subject seems to have become a big tree with alot of branches in the way.. A point that I was mulling over posting before and touched upon in recent posts that there are alot of people watching our kids live.. from like 5 feet away,

Will the next step be: "I dont want that guy in front of my child wacthing them"?

I know its another can of worms but I recon it's a tad relevent.

Its more or less an endless argument. Someone will call the police on you just for sharing the same air as his child whilst holding a camera

All this paranoia started with the no win no fee lawyers, everything started the day the government allowed it, people involved in minor traffic accidents are now suing for whiplash at 5mph and everyone is scared of being sued so are protecting themselves by saying no

In the past if you wanted to sue somebody there was financial risk involved because the solicitors would take your money even if you had no chance of winning.

Now the "where there's blame there's a claim" culture is spreading to everyday life,

It's a sad sad world where you can't even photograph your own children without feeling like your a pervert.

My daughter had her 8th birthday party at our house in the summer, so I could get some shots of the children playing without them noticing I used the sigma 120-300mm and stood well back.

I got some shots I was really happy with, when the parents of the other children came to collect them one noticed the camera and asked me about it, I could tell he was uneasy about what i'd been using it for so I showed him the pictures on the laptop,he was that pleased with some i'd taken of his daughter one is now on his wall.

I really hope common sense prevails or we're going to end up like 1960s east germany, scared to do anything for fear of prosecution

I blame the judges. If they stopped awarding such stupid cases then the lawyers wouldn't be able to afford the no win no fee service.

I remember an article about a judge who didn't know what a microwave oven was. No excuse for this - it's a main stream electrical good and judges should have a responsibility to keep up-to-date with the current world especially as judges etc can potentially ruin people's lives.

were do you live if you dont know what a microwave is??? :cuckoo::geek::cuckoo:

I think some of them should have to apply for a licence to have kids in the first place! Rather a lot of really bad stories about child abuse recently, two deaths in Harringay and that nasty piece of work in Dewsbury who drugged and imprisoned her own daughter. All family related which is DD's point here. The actual risk from anyone unrelated to the family and carrying a dslr must be in the millions!

The stupidity of this is truly blinding. If someone really wants a pic of a fully clothed minor all they have to do is look on M&S website!

Honestly!

You should see Littlewoods! Filth I tell you...............off to start a petition to some unheard of Goverment Minister, a quick poster campaign highlighing this morally repugnant behaviour and I'll have it sorted. It does not matter if I'm a minority of one I HAVE RIGHTS YOU KNOW.

:bang:

I don’t blame the school principal, he probably wanted to avoid having undignified and angry scenes at a school nativity.

All it takes is for one parent to kick up a fuss about ‘that man with a camera’ taking pictures of children and before you know it you have a lynching party!!

Unfortunately a vast majority of the public are both paranoid and ill informed when considering child protection issues.

Agreed. [S3][/S3]

Not all schools are so paranoid. Last week I photographed our 3 yr old grandson, with all the other kids, in his nursery school's Nativity play. He was the donkey and pulled his tail off - bless :)

This week I photographed our 5 yr old grandson, with all the other kids, in their Christmas production. He had to dance and was a great little mover.

... and I'm not posting any of them up here because thery are c*** shots because in each case I was trampled in the rush of all the other folks wielding cameras, camcorders etc. I think that's fantastic. All those parents and grandparents will have piccies of their little ones to coo over, send to Auntie Susan in Australia and save for the 18th Birthday!! I don't expect any of the pics will end up as evidence in court over a porn site.

EACH TIME THE KIDS WERE KEPT ON THE STAGE SO PARENTS ETC COULD TAKE LOADS OF PICS.

I honestly despair at this :bang: What would be your reaction if you were in the play area with your child and there was a parent talking pictures of their child on the swings?? Would you be 'miffed' that your child may be in the background of the shot?? I can just imagine it now,

"come on johnny time to go home"

"why?"

"because that man is taking pictures of his own child"

and, what's more, yesterday, after the play, we took the 3 yr old to the local park and took even more piccies of him on the swings, seesaw etc. AND NOBODY TOOK THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF NOTICE.

Am I

just lucky?

too scary-looking to be approached by conerned adults?

don't count because big camera don't take pics when handled by grey-haired old grannies?

Perhaps sensible schools and communities should shout louder about what will be lost if the paranoid are allowed to rule the world.

Let's all vote for common sense returning. :)

Jean

some are weird some arnt. Consider yourself lucky. I just laugh it off otherwise i would cry:D

It is really a case of being lucky,

Few months ago I was able to take a few piccys of my little sister in junior school doing an end of year school play. Subject to principle say so.

having a decent camera a few other parents were looking over smiling thinking im the dedicated tog for the school or something. I was lucky really as it was my OLD OLD school and knew a few of the teachers. So i guess some will, some wont with whole tog idea. :P

Actually Jeangenie raises a valid point there again - size of camera

It only ever seems to be anyone with a DSLR that gets picked on doesn't it?

But if quality = Perv, then what about those P&S cameras with 8-10mp now, or even camera phones with up to 8mp I believe; surely they too are now high enough quality to be used by a Perv

In which case, using a small, easily hidden high mp camera/camera-phone must make you even more of a potential Perv for 'hiding' it so easily

Just a thought

Dont get me started on that one, Terrorist act is used by the police all the time when some1 gets a dslr out. :P

Sorry for going slightly off topic, you see what i mean thow :bonk:

its not really off topic though, its just another valid point as to the fact that because we enjoy photography and spend money on good equipment, we must all be plotting to murder everyone

If they are worried about pervs looking at the kids then why are they not insisting that every member of the audience is at least checked to Enhanced Disclosure status and not allowed into the event unless they can produce both the ED certificate and photograhic proof of who they are.

Hahahha:lol: that would shock all those moaning parents out there

It's an increasingly intense argument but we have to standup for own rights. I tend to growl and refer to the person as 'stoopid' cause a scene before they do, embarrass them, and they generally move on. The other argument I always extend is that given peedos no doubt use buses and Sainsburys does the complainant think these too ought to be banned? And then go on to ask if they've ever got the bus to sainsbury's. The blushes are delicious. :p:lol:
