Hi guys i noticed most of you go away alot. just wanted to know if you have any issues with taking your tripod with you with additional charges and so on, im going to austria on saturday and need my tripod for some long exposures by the lakes. Is it best if i just try fit it in my suitcase?

Sounds like a sequel to 'Snakes on a Plane'.

PS. I apologise I cannot answer your question. However I would suggest that if no one else can help you try calling the airline you have booked with and asking them directly.

I was fine with mine going to Prague, I had it hanging out the top of my hand luggage. I wouldn't like to garantee though.

Thanks for the quick reply. yeh it was a snakes on a plane pun because i figured it would get attention that way, plus i love movies to much.

Thanks guys im gonna try get in touch with the airline after work today. it may be one for the suitcase because its a heafty redsnapper with a big 3 way pan head.

If you have room in your case you could whip the centre column/head out and pack them seperately.

I've always checked mine to be on the safe side. If they reject it as hand luggage, it's too late by then...

No it's not, it can be "gate checked" as you board the aircraft.

That said, I've either stuffed it down the middle of a bag, well padded by clothes, etc. or taken it on board with me. Not had any issues taking it on. I removed the head first so it was a little less glaring.

Remember, the carry-on allowances, dimension wise, are guidelines, not rules. Politeness (and perhaps a little flattery) will get you everywhere.

Hi dud.... I always take my tripod on hols etc and have had no problems with tripod packed away in 'checked in' luggage.
Regards, Alan.

Thanks for ever bit of info here im flying with ba, gonna stick the head in the suitcase and get the tripod with me onto the flight as hand luggage.

Eevery time we've been away, (Lufthansa) the heads been in the suitcase and the legs, lighting stands have been booked in seperately £20.

Wasn't the dodge with BA to put all your stands / tripods in a golf bag and check that in as free sporting equipment allowance ?

I had a problem coming back from Fuerteventura with the security guards when I had strapped my tripod to my hand luggage as we had exceeded the checked luggage weight limits.

They pulled me to one side, poked and prodded a bit and told me that they were going to be watching me on the CCTV and if they saw me "filming" they would send me to jail!

So no problem with the airline, but issues with the security staff. On the flight out I had the tripod in my checked luggae and that is what I will try to do in the future.

I'm quite amazed that you can't take a bottle of water on board but you can quite happily take something the size, weight and lethal effectiveness of a baseball bat into the cabin. :bang:

  Nicely illustrated there, all these rules and regs are a little odd aren't they though really?

No water? only one lighter? and your toothbrush must be sealed in a transparent plastic bag?

I mean, what's is it all for, the prevention of weapons of mass confusion?

I have a short tripod I use for holidays abroad. Bigger than a mini tripod but a lot shorter than a full size. Pack it it my case

You should see the airport police. Machine gun, hand gun, baton, CS spray, tazer. And they still can't carry a bottle of water.

And I'm pretty sure you can take a bottle of water onto a plane.

Changes are afoot, and it depends a bit where you fly and where from but generally at the moment you can't unless you buy it airside.

Which just goes to show that all these rules have very little to do with terrorism.

After all, you can't take a pair of nail clippers through security, but once through security you can buy any number of glass bottles you can take on the plane.

Have the people who plan all this never seen a bottle turned into an offensive weapon? Personally I'd rather face a pair of nail clippers.

I reckon I could pritt-stick the blades to an emery board and wreak havoc!

 Now were on weapons of imaginative creation!

My lady has just informed me, that you can take as much rope on a plane you like too?

I'd just stick in your main luggage I always do, and it always survives , whats the point of all the hassle if you have it your hand luggage, if they decide to have a proper look at it, could take ages, but I had my camera and lenses check on the way back from Kenya, only took a few mins though as the first thing he pulled out were Arthur and Martha( Travel Monkehs) custom guy just laughed showed his college she laughed, Go on he said laughing,

Arthur and Martha Clicky linky

ah, this is just the info I was after, cheers all

see - pays to use the search function once in a while!!

Although I have a super light-weight tripod for travelling, I always pack it inside a suitcase. Just less hassle. I like to carry as little as possible when wandering around airports. Especially when I seem to spend so much time at Palma airport - anyone that knows it will know what I mean.

I can't see it being much use in a hijack though, what do you do? Ask the pilots to step out of the cockpit and stand still while you tie them up?

Ive carried mine a few times now, sometimes in case, sometimes as hand luggage and have never had any issues - however I had checked with the airline first - its worth it to be safe.

But it's not the airline which utimately decides. It's the airport security people. Two entirely independent organisations.
