Watching Only Fools & Horses last night, and I noticed when Del and Rodney were sat on a bench (so no real movement in the scene) the camera was ever so slightly going up and down - probably in time with the cameraman's breathing... Now TBH, unless you was looking in the corners, the movement wasn't exactly noticeable, but once I'd spotted it I couldn't take my eyes off it.

What I was wondering is why? Why wouldn't they have used a tripod or similar? I guess the answer is to do with feeling more natural from a 3rd person view as the viewer? Even in Eastenders afterwards, I noticed similar. Although not as bad as no doubt they are using much better equipment these days with glide-cams, over the shoulder rigs etc....

The better way to record a video is on a stable platform.

If showing that it was an "amateur or improvised shoot"
is important, a slightly leaning horizon and / or a shake
can do it.

Both the shooter's breathing and the heartbeat may in-
troduce some movement in the recording.

Telecine weave.

Outdoor scenes at that time were shot on film. They were then converted to video in a mechanical machine running in real time.
