Hi Guys,

Got my hands on a decently priced iPhone 3GS OS 3.1.3 on eBay and was googling up to see how to unlock it from O2. Called O2 and their support was not so great as I have recently changed network provider to t-Mobile [Fair enuf]

My concern is that by following the youtube etc advice I may make the iPhone unusable permenantly hence a bit apprehensive. Also saw some websites promoting services to unlock the iPhone for a fee but not sure how authentic and reliable they are? :gag:

Any further advice will be much appreciated who may have had any experience in this dept. :)

Mods: Feel free to delete this thread. I am not asking how to illegally unlock iPhone but sharing a concern of making iPhone unusable permenantly.

Thanks harvey_nikon. Looking into it.

Forgot to add that ready to pay a resoanable fee for the service. :)

Few issue m8.

1. I am a T-mobile customer
2. This iPhone I bought on eBay belongs to someone's O2 sim and still attached to this owner
3. Called O2 and they were not too helpful when I told them I wish to unlock it from them to use on any network.

Let me know if I may be being daft above :help:

If its a 'contract' phone, then the original owner can have it unlocked for free via O2 - might be worth asking them if they'll do it?

You probably won't be able to downgrade the FW, Apple won't sign 3.1.2 in iTunes and unless it had it's hashes backed up to Cydia's servers then a restore is out of the question.

There won't be an update to BlackRa1n, they won't bother using a loophole against a minor FW update, they're saving it for a major one.

Seriously, best bet is to get an O2 payg sim and use that number for the unlock service. I think it recently changed so that O2 Payg customers wanting to unlock within the first year will just lose the free 12month internet access.

Thanks for your advice mate.

I spoke with a guy who owns a mobile phone business and he mentioned that if possible get it unlocked via O2 to avoid further hassles. Fortunately the eBay seller has filled in the unlock form and will follow up with O2 and hopefully it will be unlocked in the next 14 days. :)

Another option I was thinking if the above fails is to go on a monthly rolling simplicity contract for a tenner and then request O2 to unlock it after which cancel the contract. ;)

The last resort would be the BlackRa1n and the likes of those for reason mentioned above. :shake:

Been running unlocked iphone now for a while.

Used the pwnage tools to do it, free of charge.

i know it doesnt answer your question, but if you keep the phone its worth keeping it on o2
as far as i'm aware there arent any better pay+go sims for the iphone than o2. I get unlimited texts and unlimited data when i top up £15 (and obv £15 of calls)

This is your best course of action. The ebay seller simply needs to fill in an online form and a week or so later, it's unlocked. No warranty issues, no possibility of bricking it. Got mine done a couple of weeks ago.

EDIT : should really read the whole thread before posting :)

Update: The original owner [ebayer] agreed to fill in online form to unlock my iPhone and it's now unlocked to any sim. :D

Thank you all for all the help, support and advice.

Hi Chouglez,

sorry to bring this thread back, but how did you manage to do this?

I maybe buying an iphone, and its locked on o2. I would ask the owner of the handset to go the legit way, but he already has an iphone4, so if he requests it now, how would it work if he is no longer using the old 3G one? :(

Here are the steps to officially unlock your phone locked to O2.

1. Get a FREE O2 PAYG SIM from Prepaymania

2. Top up the PAYG SIM with only £15 [you may wish to top up with more if you plan to use it at a later date and need to keep some balance in it but £15 is what is needed to officially unliock your iPhone]

3. Make 2 calls to 2 of your frequenctly called numbers but cancel your calls so that money is not deducted from your PAYG SIM account.

4. Fill in this O2 Unlock form

In this form it will ask you about your iPhone's IMEA number, and 2 numbers to whom you most frequently call [step 3 above comes handy here] and some more personal details.

5. After the form is filled and submitted, after a couple of days check if the £15 pounds are deducted from your PAYG SIM.

6. Once the money is deducted call O2 and tell them that you had filled in the form, the money is deducted and the phone is still locked to O2.
O2 customer services guy/gal will then contact Apple iPhone. In a couple of days check whether your iPhone has been unlocked by doing the following....

"Place a non-O2 sim into the iPhone and connect to iTunes via a USB cable. iTunes will confirm that the iPhone has been successfully unlocked"

The above may take a couple of attempts for iTunes to unlock your phone.

Only Genuine Iphones which have been locked to O2 before can be locked the official way.

Hope the above helps.

They should still unlock it for him, but even if he doesn't do it, they'll unlock it for you for £15. It just may take up to 21 days.
