For many years one of my dream photographic destinations has been Halong Bay in northern Vietnam. The vision of 3000 odd limestone pinnacles sticking out of the ocean just seemed perfect for photographic opportunities.

Having retired earlier this year I treated my wife and I to a holiday in Vietnam to fulfill my dream. We have just returned and, to cut a long story short, we ran into the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana which had wind speeds of 176kph and dropped over a metre of rain in 24 hrs. All trips into Halong Bay were cancelled and one of the tourist boats had been capsized with the loss of 4 people.

We still had a good holiday but the weather was bad for photography and many of my pictures are of wind and water damage and devastating floods.

Lets keep this in perspective though. While I was disappointed at not fulfilling my dream, many of the locals had lost their homes, all their possessions and their crops to see them through the next year and a substantial number lost their lives. I was not so unlucky after all if you look at the bigger picture.

Its a shame your photographic plans didnt go to plan, but you hit the nail on the head, people lost their homes and worse, lives. Makes you realise how lucky we are.
