Virtualbox .vdi help

I had a virtual machine running in Virtualbox before I installed a new OS however even after backing up everything I thought I needed I still can't get the machine up and running fully again. The closest I have got sso far is getting the original install up and running, however I still can't work out how to get the latest snapshots and secondary drive to work again. The machine itself isn't important however some of the data/files on the secondary storage disk are some that I don't particularly want to lose (nothing really important, just some stuff thats a bit inconvinient if I lose it).

Is there any program (other than VB) that I can use to open the .vdi files* and extract the files I need? If the files can be extracted I have no problem with reinstalling another virtual machine from scratch if I need it again.

*two, around 9GB each, one the original drive with OS and the second the storage drive AFAIK.

Thanks :)

I'm not a user of Virtualbox but it may be worth trying to convert the vm to another format like vmware and see if the problem persists there. This page has the relevant info:

Thanks. :)

I did wonder about doing that the problem is I cant get the latest snapshots up and running in Vbox which appears to mean all i'll be able to do is translate the base system to the new file format, which isn't going to help. :(

Thanks!

I couldn't get the IMDish to work propely but using one of the links found winmount which worked like a charm!

Just need to reset up a new machine and I can carry on where I left off. :)

As a matter of interest, why use Virtualbox rather than VMWare?

No idea really. Think I have used VMware in the past but decided this time to try virtualbox. :)

All I need is a bog standard install of XP for basic needs and access to the internet so performance wasn't really an issue either.

Why pay £150.00 for VMWare Workstation when Virtual Box is free?

Because ESXi server is free and you can do way more.

Jason - my question:

was to the OP and he answered it:

Thanks for your input but it really was not necessary :)

Odd, since you posted it in an public forum and had already responded to by post of £150 vs free with your ESXi post. If you didn't want the prospect of someone else commenting wouldn't a PM have been a better option?

Or did you just not appreciate my comments regarding ESXi not being a desktop solution, which the OP was using, or the fact that ESXi is much less feature rich than other free products?

If you don't want someone else commenting on a question, use a PM ;)
