Beginning of June I will be staying at Amble, in Northumberland.
I plan to do the following during my stay:-

  • Booked a workshop with young Will Nicholls and his Red Squirrels.
  • Visit Lindisfarne (Holy Island).
  • Landing trip to the Farne Islands.
  • Visit to Bempton Cliffs.
What else would you recommend I try to schedule into the visit, especially anything that will appeal to SWMBO who isn't such a keen photographer?
Appreciate any advice given :)

That boring an area?

Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh are certainly worth a visit. I spend a bit of time up at Alnmouth which is lovely. The beaches on a nice day are some of the best around. There's also some lovely scenery in the Cheviots, and Kielder Forest for more scenery, and a bit of stargazing at the observatory

Thanks Matty, The Cheviots look interesting with Barn Owls and Water Voles on the list of species there :)

Hey, I'm looking to go to Morpeth this weekend for a road trip and for some walks too, any suggestions please?

Depends what you fancy and the tranportation your using as we have the Angel of the North, the bridges on the River Tyne.

There is Kielder which is great for dark skies, but in june it not be much of a dark sky

If you are in Amble you will be near Alnwick with its castle, Dunstanburgh castle and of course right next to Warkworth castle. Amble is not too far away from St Marys lighthouse in Whitley Bay. There is loads to see in Northumberland. Joe Cornish's book called The Northumberland Coast will give you some ideas too.

Great info, thanks :)

All the way up the coast from the Tyne to Berwick is a great place for photographers. https://www.flickr.com/groups/seascapesnortheast/

There are reds at Wallington Hall.

For birds there is Hauxley just beside Amble. A few miles south you have Druridge and Cresswell. Check out http://www.birdforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=172

Try to fit in Hadrian's Wall if you can

Bempton Cliffs is a bit of a hike. Think it took over 2 hours for me to get there from South East Northumberland

Thanks for the extra info and links ... my feeling is that I can't be that close to Bempton and not visit :D

A useful buy I think :)

I live in Whitley Bay and have access to the coast as often as I want but Northumberland's not just about the coast I would advise moving inland. Ive spent a small amount of time with a exceptional photographer and one thing that's stuck that he's always said is "get away from the boats and castles and find the hidden Northumberland" Nothing at all wrong with the coast, boats or castles as I have a couple photos in my collection but you have to admit they've been photographed to death.

and depending on your route home if you cross Appleby I would strongly advise stopping for the day!! not every ones cup of tea but ive been for the best part of the last 20 years of my life bearing in mind im on 28 its a fantastic day out and your right an excellent opportunity for some amazing photographs. This maybe the first year I go with the intention of real photos.

I can recommend Howick Hall Gardens which is not so well known - I have lived in the North East for 50 years but only went for the first time within the last couple of years. I have some photos from the location on my blog here:

Roughting Linn is an attractive waterfall, which could be combined with a drive to the Cheviots:

Beamish Museum is good:

And for a wet day Barter Books in Alnwick.

Thanks Kevin, I had forgotten Beamish, that has to be good for a visit :)
