WAMT....what annoyed me today!

To be fair Morrisons (the supermarket one not Kenneth M who are brilliant) was useless before the Co-op arrived. Even as the Wildcat Store it was pretty useless. The Co-op's fine if you get in there before the campervanners have cleaned it out

I recall from many years ago(ie about 40) that Wildcat was a decent shop, within the limitations of size and location but it really went downhill, as you say before the Co-op arrived. The Co-op does have a stock problem at times, a combination of sometime large visitor numbers, not a huge amount of storage space, that fresh goods can be stored for only a limited time and I don't think they get delivery as often as is necessary when demand is great; I've seen quite few empty shelves at times.

The nearest petrol station to you is at Laide about 8 miles to the north. Gairloch also has a petrol staion, a small Coop, the Farm and Garden shop(its name can be a bit misleadin because in addition to hardware it has a small range of outdoor clothing, the usual groceries and beers and wines. There is also a small Morrisons(as in the supermarket chain) shop but it is overshadowed by the newish Coop, there is also a Chinese Takeaway and an excellent butchers called Kenneth Morrison.

If you fancy a sea trip about a mile south of the Coop shop is Charletown harbour where this id located - https://www.hebridean-whale-cruises.co.uk/

We have been out a couple times with them and seen gannets, great skuas, raozorbills, puffins, guillemots, golden and white tailed eagles.

Dave

Rain until Wednesday 1.00pm,Dave. Heavy cloud Thursday, we leave Friday morning so will pack the car Thursday pm. Two reasons we came up this far are my wife wanted to see the NW and despite being brought up near Kilmarnock had never been. Not even to Mull or Skye. Also, so I can give my dad's RN arctic convoy photos. to the museum here. I got an Email this morning asking me to go there in the morning and the curator will go through them. She's really pleased. It's a small building but has a lot of visitors. It's recommended a lot in the visitor's book at our accommodation.

A lot of guests fly to Inverness and hire a car..the guests from Kent, next door..same owners...have done that, but I like to have my photo gear which includes my tripods. It's too far and fairly narrow road and windy, too past Inverness. They are upgrading it, A832...so lots of long roadworks. We would have done a boat trip but that window of opportunity re the weather has gone. As I write this post the rain is hitting the windows like a monsoon. There's been no shoreline wildlife since Sunday....hunkered down somewhere sheltered, I assume. Re Gairloch ..for some reason I've kept spelling it Gaerloch. I imagined it was a small place but, from what you say it's not. But....here's what AI says about the roads. Btw..We'd also planned to go to Ullapool.

The Coastal & Mountain Sections (e.g., around Gairloch, Loch Maree, and towards Ullapool): This is where the road gets much more challenging. The route becomes highly convoluted, with steep climbs, sharp descents, hairpin bends, and numerous blind summits.

Width: While some parts are wide enough for two vehicles, much of the coastal stretch narrows down to a "single-track" road with an abundance of passing places. You will frequently need to pull over to let oncoming traffic pass.

Tbh..We underestimated the drive here. We split the driving but my wife prefers to do the lion's share and the prospect of doing even more driving doesn't exactly fill her with enthusiasm., especially on the type of roads as outlined above.

So.. The scenery en-route was great. We stopped for photos. The view across Loch Ewe, includes the Isle of Ewe right opposite. is fantastic with more mountains beyond but because of the inclement weather they disappear from sight for long periods. It's only 7.20pm but we have the lights on.Sunset is 10.25pm. Would we come again ? No. It took us 48 hours to get back into our stride. It's certainly been relaxing, reading books,..not so relaxing trying to watch the World Cup on a wi-fi tv that kept dropping out just as a free kick outside the six yard box or a penalty was about to be taken..lol. At least we'll get back home in time to watch the final. Hopefully, between now and then our next week in Southerness, Solway Firth will be better...

We'll be back to sunnier climes in September...lol.

Gairloch, not Gaerloch. A hamlet....................!!?? :ROFLMAO: And it's not a narrow road - it's an A road with white lines down the middle. Just watch out for the sheep and deer and goats. Oh dear........
You really should try to appreciate the area for what it is

Most,if not all, of what you've said I've covered in my post to Dave. I have no idea why I kept spelling Gairloch..Gaerloch. Just one of those things. As you see from my response to Dave, it's not been easy to appreciate what a great area it is because of the atrocious weather. The guests next to us had planned a day out but after seeing the downpours abandoned it. I'm trying to recall when I last saw such heavy, persistent rain. Over the next 48 hours it will move east, out into the North Sea, and on towards Denmark/Norway according to the 6.00pm news earlier. I see back home the temperatures are climbing back into the mid-30s.

A what ??? I assume that is some kind of tech communication aid ?

Googled it.. Ok..So..what we have here is a smart tv that operates via the wi-fi. It has lots of apps..Netflix. etc. and three darned remotes..Because it operates via the wi-fi it keeps dropping out. Frustrating doesn't adequately explain the emotion when someone, for example on this morning's Laura Kuensberg's show , says.."the reason for that is.....the wi-fi drops out. After about 30 seconds it's playing catchup. I actually gave up watching it this morning. It's the same with the World Cup games..the 6.00pm..8.00pm kick offs..our time.

So..three remotes. One is marked....'Now TV.'..it should be 'Now & Then tv....or "Maybe tv"....The other is the regular remote you get with all TVs and I have no idea what the third one is for. As you'll be aware, Aultbea,on Loch Ewe, is pretty remote. There are two holiday homes here..us and next door, beyond that the nearest house is some about 500m away, one way, and I can't see any houses the other way. A few up the hill behind us .

I think there is one doctor here.Looking west,it's just the loch and hills/mountains. It's wonderfully quiet ..just the sound of heavy rain....but it's too remote for us. I have no idea where the nearest petrol station is. There's a wee well-stocked general store and a butcher van visits as does a fish van. I think Gaerloch ..12 miles away on a narrow road, is the nearest hamlet. We were going to visit Ullapool but we've driven enough and it's an hour's drive away. We're just coming to after the two-day drive to get here. We stayed overnight in Motherwell. After we leave here,it's back to Motherwell for a night and on to Southerness, Solway Firth, for another week. The temperature here,at Aultbea is 12C. Back home it's heading towards 32C +...like the last heat wave. .

It sounds like you need a holiday. I've heard that Gloucester is very quiet at the moment.

It's the manopause, Alan.

You have been very unlucky with the weather, John. Almost any weather can happen nearly anytime. I've seen T shirt weather in Februrary and a nearby village had a month's rain in one day one May, which can't be far off what happened yesterday. The rest of today looks pretty decent and tomorrow and Thursday look good. Hope your experience hasn't put you off visiting again.

That's very true, Dave.

Re visiting again. We're well- retired now and the almost 7 hour trip from home to Motherwell..overnight stay..then another 6 hours here knocked us out. We couldn't have faced the two hour round trip to Ullapool we'd planned whatever the weather . We'd probably have gone to Gairloch. I don't know how much of that AI generated description of the road to Gairloch was accurate. I was really pointing out to Jannyfox that it wasn't quite the easy drive she was claiming. It's 12 miles away.

We managed Chanonry Point..dolphins..about 5 years ago but I think up to a four hour drive is the limit, now. If the weather doesn't improve we'll leave Solway Firth next Wednesday instead of Friday. This Friday, we drive back to Motherwell and stay overnight again then on to Southerness.

Btw. The curator at the museum was really pleased with my dad's Arctic Convoy photos and has digitally scanned them. I can collect the album tomorrow. They will allocate a display cabinet for them..waist -high. They said they rarely get photos like that.

Actually, it's not just quiet here but silent. The loudest noise I've heard has come from the oystercatchers. Oh,yes.....the wind plus the rain hitting the windows,too...Lol.

John you need to give AI a rest. The only road I can think of that vaguely fits that description is the Bealach na Ba which is Applecross. Most Scottish single track roads are a doddle to drive compared to SW England

We went looking at houses in Devon a few years ago, and what put us off, apart from a few that had oil for heating,, were the narrow roads and a couple of near misses on bends caused by, who we assumed were, locals who 'know the roads' ... so,yes,I take your point.

As you'll have seen re my last post to Dave a lot was to do with tiredness. The road away from the A832 to here is narrow and winding and put us off doing anything else other than enjoy the peace and tranquility here.

Insurance. Went on a popular comparison site for holiday travel insurance. Put in all the correct info, got the quotes and chose one. All docs arrive and it suggests to check, so I do and the docs say Netherlands (we're going to Spain!). I contact them and they say that the comparison sit has given them the wrong info - strange that, as it all matches on my copy. They want to charge another £80 or so, to change from Netherlands to Spain????? I cancelled on "cooling off" period. They say five days to get my refund!!! Why??? Never had a problem before. Doh! Luckily I paid via credit card!
