Yes
We've now decided to lift the restrictions on wedding threads, but with a few conditions.
Firstly, the Weddings subforum is no longer. All threads should now go in their respective forums. (Skill and method goes in TalkPhotography, Lighting questions go into Talk Lighting, Equipment in Talk Equipment etc).
We now only allow established members to ask for photographers. This can be for assistance for an upcoming event or project they are involved in, or to pass on a booking to a fellow professional that they otherwsie cannot fulfil themselves. We also allow and certainly encourage requests for 'second shooters' for upcoming bookings.

We no longer allow the following :

  • Posts by non-photographers looking for a 'freebie' or a 'cheap photographer'.
  • Wedding requests unless by an established* TP member or a professional requesting assistance of a fellow photographer.
  • Requests from brides/wedding parties.
  • Any threads or posts the staff believe are not within the spirit of Talk Photography, regardless of content.
* Established member is to be decided on a case by case basis, and staff discretion is final

Such threads will be removed by staff without warning.

We would also like to make it absolutely clear we are clamping down on the rise in unpleasant and rude replies that wedding threads seem to attract.
If someone requests assistance for a 'First wedding' or some such, then your replies must be constructive, helpful, thoughtful, encouraging, tolerant, and above all POLITE.
If your post doesn't follow this, then do not click submit.

Any comments that we believe are contrary to this ethos WILL be removed by staff and followed up with either a temporary suspension or permanent ban. Ignorance is absolutely no excuse.
We are no longer prepared to allow a vocal minority to ruin the community and friendly aspect that the rest of the members have spent so long building up.

Professionals, we understand that some of you don't always agree with amateurs 'trying their hands' at weddings. However, there is little to be gained in offering rude and condescending replies about them needing experience, skill, and other professional attributes. Try offering a constructive, helpful and polite reply. Maybe it might be worth writing a tutorial or guide to wedding photography that you could point them to? Instead of saying 'you shouldn't be doing it at all', maybe pass on and share some of your knowledge to help their day go smoother.

In the same vein, if you are an amateur just about to do a wedding, it's certainly not a good idea to take on a wedding as a professional without the experience and knowledge under your belt. Posts made in this vein will certainly offer little sympathy in return and only serve to cause tension and disagreement. Especially if you are trying to turn professional at weddings without the relevant experience.

To everyone :
If you find a post 'annoys' you, step away and count to 10.
Then think "Would I say this to the person if they were stood infront of me"

In short, try and have a little more respect for other people when you reply. There is another person at the other end of the post, reading. TalkPhotography is about sharing our enjoyment of photography with others, and this community was borne out of that sharing of knowledge in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Let's keep it that way and don't let animosity or grudges ruin it.

Yay, the weekly entertainment is back.............:naughty:

Gets the thumbs up from me Marcel, not that i particularly participated in wedding threads...

Never looked at the wedding threads, but hope the above strikes chords with us all and we all remain well behaved

Nicely done anyways mods - You have my utmost respect

Thanks :)

Bloomin eck I thought this would cause more of a stir :p

Not participated in any of those but having read some replies in the threads where bride to be requested a "free photographer" I totally agree with all of it (especially politeness part) and it's a big thumbs up from me.

Thanks Admins

Arrrr, arrrr, censorship, this country is going to the dogs, we're having our internet rights destroyed by this fascist regime, I'm an amateur with a point and shoot and I'm planning on doing my first wedding and I'm getting married and I want a professional photographer for free and I want to shoot it myself with my point and shoot and now saying that's against the rules, this country is going to the dogs arrgghhhhh.

Something more like that? :D.

Seriously though, lets hope it sorts out the issues, both about weddings and across the board in general. Good stuff

Don't forget to mention Diana. You're doing the Daily Mail a disservice there.

All joking apart, forum seems a lot friendlier that did a short while back....

Be glad to see it again. Amateur's have to start somewhere, and isnt it better to help one than hinder them. Doing that might ruin someone else's day.

Agree with all the "new" rules- not sure about not having a sub-forum though. Bet the mod's know what they are doing more than me though :)

the e.u. speaks

good management

Whatever. There will always be brides, and others, looking for a free/cheap photographer because they really can't afford anything else, or they're just looking for a bargain, and there will always be people ready to step up to the mark. The results may, or may not, meet expectations but there's not much anyone can do about it.

I don't blame TP for taking a cautious stance, or wedding pros for trying to protect their livelihood or the reputation of their craft, but photography isn't a profession, in the sense of requiring specific qualifications, any sort of post grad internship, and registration with a professional body in order to practice, so there are no legal benchmarks. Anyone can call themselves a professional photographer, and it's a bit of a free for all. Caveat emptor.
