Yes, though ‘trace’ could refer to DNA (which I think tied him to the box the gun was in, not sure though).

It could but equally the defence could argue that the DNA got there through some innocent or nefarious way which proves nothing incriminating. My point is that the defence will point to a lack of evidence and refer to this lack in a sound bite style which suits their agenda... to get a not guilty verdict. If the lack of evidence was clarified and placed in some context such as "We very rarely get anything conclusive from a gun because..." that might paint a different picture.
 
I don't think anyone should be given a free ride or unchallenged platform and that goes for anyone from the accused and their relatives to politicians.
