What broke Windows 10?

Spoke too soon, haven't changed anything on the machine, but back to the original problem.
The new media player wouldn't open, so tried the search and start button, now no apps run, not calculator or notifications, or any app.

Ran the system file checker etc, no help.

Got it running updates now, go nothing to lose.

The machine is only about 30 months old, came with W10 (and has the logo sticker, so was OEM)

That's strange how media player won't run, what about VLC media player?

When you said you have a new one arriving, do you mean a new PC?

The new media playeris an app, the old one still works.

Yes, new laptop

That's very strange then that a brand new computer would have problems? It's definitely not Windows N edition?

No, it's not the new one with problems :)

That was two answers to your two questions

Chatting to an ex colleague, he says he thinks there has been some changes in the way Cortana and Copilot fit into the overall system, and although the uninstall option is not greyed out, they do not uninstall cleanly.
He suggested to me that a recent update has made Cortana more integrated with the search function, and that is why my machine went wrong.

He also said that uninstalling One drive and even things like Xbox and Skype can cause errors.

It could make sense, and does fit in roughly with the timing of events, so while I am copying data onto the new machine, will rebuild the old one once again, but not go through my "standard" procedure of uninstalling all the M$ junk I don't want.

FWIW

The Realtek update which I posted about did auto-install today. AFAIK and can tell so far there has not been negative impact.

PS I had looked to see why such an update was offered and even after the above update being installed I cannot see that it has actually updated???

However, plugging my TP Link WiFi adaptor again....I had removed as it was the only one running/in use at the time of the concern....I find it is that device that was driver updated

I will leave the TP Link turned on for now and fingers crossed all will be AOK here :)

PS there is currently pending a restart the December Cumulative update
2024-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5048652)

Their usual mandatory update....of which one fix is the Windows would not start if you change the motherboard !

Well, my new machine just finished an update, and guess what, no apps work!!!

Only software installed so far is Affinity, Libre Office, Firefox, Foxit and CorelDraw

I'm starting to think about CorelDraw as it is an old version, been working fine for nearly 20 years, but it often tries to call home to activate, but the activation server shut down years ago.

So far I've not had any more crashes. I don't want to speak too soon, but it's looking promising. Windows 10 for the win! lol

That is good news, let's hope that is the end of your problems :)

I thought I would have a look round.....

And in the page is this one

It kind of sound like Coral Draw does not play nice (at times?).

Though why one program will affect all the others???
One thing that does occur to me though is that many programs will add & use MS distributables (e.g. C+ something or other). So just an out of the box thought:-
If one adds the most up to date "distributable" but then another, older program, installs it's older version of the same of the type but overwrites the newer version instead of installing in parallel ~ as I say just a though especially as you have a common (to you) problem on both older PC and brand new PC.

Looks like it has had a few issues, and it was 4X as well.
Strange it has been fine until the update at the end of last week though.

Anyway, I idi not install it, and the machine so far is fine, but can't say that for certain for a few days.

As for why one programme affects others, that is the worrying part! And also why I am not sure it is the answer, want proof first.

Yesterday whatsapp stopped working, tried the notification button, start button and search box and they didn't work, and neither did programme installed as an app.
If one rougue programme can stop all apps working, it sounds like that may be a problem that needs some fixing :)

When you refer to "apps" are you talking about installed programs or akin to phone apps?
I think I mentioned elsewhere once Affinity released .MSI I was happy as the .MSIX (sandboxed?) frankly were not for me.

FWIW I use WhatsApp on my phone not my PC

As I inferred above, to have an akin problem on both your old PC and your new PC does suggest a potentially common factor due to installed programs. Other than as you are now doing, installing one program at a time and allowing a wait period before the next is a plausible method.

apps are MSIX, programmes are MSI

Yes, I remember the Affiity problem, was a part of that too, I wrote a script to access the apps from other programmes, which they used for some until the msi versions were complete. I put it on their forum, but they had to take it down until they had checked it :)

I have whatsapp on the phone, but I use phones as phones, I find it very tiresome with a small screen and no keyboard

Re: Affinity ~ I certainly recall a workaround (or two?) that 'worked' but welcomed the MSI and uninstalled the MSIX in anticipation of the MSI becoming available :)
