What do you prefer to shoot?

Yes
What is your favourite photographic subject and why? (landscapes, animals, people, macro etc...)

For me it's landscapes.

My photographic heros have always been landsacpe snappers. I personally think it's the hardest area to master, it's also the kind of photography I get to make the least amount of time for but best of all, you normally get to really soak in the glory of the location while your shooting. :)

I like landscapes too but to get the good light usually means early mornings for sunrises and late evening for sunsets. When you add in travel times to get to locations and the unpredictable weather we all have to contend with, I believe that it makes this area of photography so difficult before you even begin with the picture taking.

When everything drops into place and you get things right, the results can be stunning though. Its difficult though when you do everything in your power to get a shot and it just doesn't work through no fault of your own, if you go through long periods like that (which is easily done) then you can become disheartened very quickly.

Many people do not think about those aspects when looking at landscape photography.

To be honest, at the moment it's anything - time is so tight at the moment if it moves I'll shoot it (and if it doesn't move). But favourite.....sunsets every time.

How come you avoided the question, Minimeeze? Come on, what's yours?

regards

I like pretty well any photographic subject. I'd love to do more lndscapes, but I've got a long drive in any direction to get to the nice green bits, and I don't have the time or the commitment.

I think everyone has the inspiration/ motivation issue now and again, but one thing you could do is start to document something - an ongoing project over the years. The changing face of your local town is an obvious one. People are fascinated by old pictures of their area. You could end up with a fascinating collection, not to mention probably also very saleable to local papers who run feature articles on 'days gone by' You can take these pics in your walkabouts looking for inspiration.

Locally we used to have more pubs per square inch than amost anywhere else, and a lot of them have now sadly gone, includng one reputed to have the longest bar in the country - you walked in off one street, along the bar and out into another street. The times I said I must photograph it while it was still there, but I never did. :nut:

I read an article once about a guy who'd built up a lifetime collection of pics of unusual pub signs. Just cos I haven't done it it, doesn't mean you can't. :whistle2:

Anything at all really, except people and street.

Erm... have you ever been to Aldershot?? It's a dive, and I'm not planning on living here for much longer :) (But I do know what you mean!!)

I didn't avoid the question - I was just interested to see what everyone liked taking pictures of :p But as you asked...

I quite like nature/landscape photography, especially the differences in seasons and the ever changing colours and scenery. I suppose this is because it is easy to just get in the car and go somewhere to take pictures :) I'd love to become more involved in macro (my macro lens is redundant at the mo :( ), but just don't have the time at the minute.

Id like to be able to do landscape, but i dont have anything round here worth shooting lol

My personal favourites are, Wildlife, Motorsport (not just cars, powerboats/bikes etc) and am hoping to visit some airshows this year.

People, people and of course, not forgetting people.

Doing anything and everything. If I do a landscape it should have a human aspect to it (maybe not actual figures in it, but man's influence on it). I think the problem I have with a lot of people's landscape work (and I include the greats like Ansel Adams, Brett Weston and more recently Heather Angel) is that they appear cold and distant to me - I don't feel engaged with what I'm looking at.
To me doing still-life and other inanimate objects, while technically impressive just leaves me emotionally numb... I cannot see the point - unless someone's prepared to pay me to do it I don't bother.
Same with photos of Pets and other animals - I just think 'dog' or 'horse' and turn the page (figuratively speaking) looking for something more interesting. That's not to say there aren't some great shots of animals to be had, just that most people don't do it - they plonk the dog/cat/horse/wildebeeste in the middle of the field/lawn/carpet/veldt etc and snap away. Well-exposed, nicely framed but dull, dull, dull...

Like Arkady I like photographing people and now have six super subjects who so far don't answer back in grandchildren - but I know this won't last. The other is to give pleasure - to hell with rules it is how you and others enjoy your image. Yes I do like to see landscapes, but again some human interest adds something in many cases. I am enjoying the challenge of wildlife especially in this weather and trying to be more adventurous in subjects having seen the work of others in the forum and at the local club.

I'd say my choice would be locations, or more precisely structures and architecture, also enjoy seascapes - especially when the conditions are right.

Still havent got the knack of sticking a lens in peoples faces yet and not feeling intrusive.

i'd love to shoot more of the things im passionate about, like surfing and cycling. the trouble it that once you get to a good level in those sports, you only want to shoot people of a good level making subjects less frequent. again they're very weather dependant, you can spend months waiting for waves that will look good in a pic and you have to be there in a moments notice.

landscapes are great, especially if you can pull them off. i'm very much looking forward to doing some travel photography this year. i should be off on a motorcycle jouney from southern india to nepal if all goes well so i'll be looking for street and people shots to go with the obvious secenery.

Anything so long as there are no people in it I have nothing against people
I just dont like them getting in the way

i'm new to photography so i'll take shots of anything really, but i do like landscapes, and protraits of my seven year old daughter who loves being photographed.

I will change the sequence by saying airshows give me a buzz with the camera, Followed very close by portrait or candid shots getting fine detail of the subject.. Trouble is the subject often moans when they see too much detail..:laugh1:

Landscapes for me, and stuff generally. But i generaly like being in the great outdoors and the beauty of it all never ceases to amaze me.

I really want to do porno though ;)

Wildlife (birds mainly), and motorsport (motorcycles being my particular passion) - I suppose this reflects my other interests, I'd happilly just go watch birds and motorsport / ride motobikes and have just as much fun with or without a camera. Having the camera just means I can capture the moment.
Just got myself a Tamron 90mm macro lens so hoping to get into that soon too.

mmmm that reminds me BSB at Donnington is on 7th to 9th April, yippee :woot: :woot: :woot: cant wait :D
oh and BTW....its been a long winter - I really really really cant wait :D :D :D :D :D

LOL

I'm surprised the likes of Jewel haven't dropped the inevitable "so you like macro work then " ;)

Just do it. Bit expensive to start with unless you operate your own site, but a mate of mine nets about £32,000 a month in subscription fees. He has to do at least three major shoots a week to keep the updates frequent enough for people to keep coming back and renewing.
He splits his shoots between here and Ibiza (where he originally started by offering skint tourist girls cash for photos).
He now has 'talent spotters' working for him in the clubs so he doesn't have to do all the legwork himself.

PM me and I'll send you a link to his site, but it's not for a public forum.

Wildlife for me, also try my hand at still life and macro.
I find it a challenge to get really good shots of animals
and get a buzz when it comes off.

I try my hand at motorsport every now and again when I
get the opertunity to get to an event.

I'd like to get my hand in with landscapes, but time constraints
aren't on my side at the moment.

Flowers, and weddings. Flowers because variety, colours, textures and access to loads, and weddings because there is not a better feeling knowing your capturing somebodies special moment.

;) :D He was joking about doing the porn bit eh?LOL

Although any subject matter will do really as I need to learn and gain experience, I do prefer to shoot people. Human behaviour intrigues me very much so, I love capturing that on camera.

Jewel :)

I havn't posted here in a while, so I better play catch up.

For me it has to be event photography especially if it involves motorsport. I also like to shoot (photographs) people. They seem to potray an interesting subject in my opinion.

Ed :)

my favourite subject is macro, followed by landscapes/architecture

I love macro work and anything including flowers. Landscape, sunsets, water - love 'em all.

Macro work can be frustrating but so absorbing, you lose all sense of your surroundings as you become so focused on the job at hand. I love the array of abstact, colourful and detailed effects you can achieve and this is where the flowers come in.

Landscapes etc. can definately be challenging, getting up early, long journeys, roughing it, walking, climbing, more walking, rotten weather, cold, tired, too much sun, too little sun, too much breeze messing with reflections in water, too much cloud for nice blue skies blah blah blah..... BUT when you capture a fantastic sunset, the delicate mist of an early morining, the luschious greens of spring and summer, the warm russets and golds of autumn, the crispy blue cold of winter, or when you turn a raging torrent into a delicate mist of softness ........ you just want to do it over and over. The best bit is the glass of veno at the end of the day to sooth away the aches and pains. The combination of capturing beauty and memories is definately the way to get that buzz!

Hmmmm....good question! Like many others on here I also have an interest in motorsport but mine is in a slightly different direction - speedway. Do a fair amount of action shots but my favourite stuff so far as speedway is concerned is the "candid" type shots in the pits.

Away from speedway, well, all sorts really. When we're in Scotland then it's mainly the stunning scenery that grabs my attention - it would be hard for it not too! otherwise when I'm out and about generally, almost anything to be honest - if it shouts at me to be photographed then I'll usually oblige!

Pebbles on a beach - I can never resist those! Bit of a trademark now!

Anything tame and covered in fur or feathers - I mean, their own! You can't get them to pose for you if they don't want to, but when they're curious they're cute - mostly. :)

Just now I'm watching this albino coot who always swims across to me whenever I'm on the river bank. He's kind of wondering about that big eye looking at him. No, it's the bit of bread really. :D

Supermoto bikes and powerboat racing, just got into Marathon Photoing and would like to get into concert photography as well as Mountian Bike Racing.

Carl.

I'm interested in people and how they interact with one and other and the environment they live in.
