advertised as a Canon FD 50mm 1.8

it's a breach-lock - but nothing like the 2 i have

an FD 35mm 3.5 S.C.
an FD 50mm 1.8 S.C.

what's the ''switch'' for...... between the 'white dot' and the 'L'

Im just guessing here, but it could be a FL lens? predecessor to the FD mount

Don't think so, I'm pretty sure that's the original FD mount. I've had three breech-mount lenses (50mm f/1.4, 100mm f/2.8 and 85-300mm f/4.5) and none of them had that switch.

Perhaps it's the extremely rare Optional-L lens. When the switch is at L, a red ring appears on the front of the lens. :thinking:
 
It's FD.

The lever allows you to lock the lens in automatic or manual aperture mode when set at 'L'.

It's in the manual for the AE1.

many thanks......i think it's worth a punt then, as i have a mint Canon AE-1 bought on a whim from eBay - as it was my first SLR way back when....:LOL:

but it needs light seals so has been sitting on the shelf
