Which Lens?

I am new to DSLR photography and have been loaned a Canon 10D to get me rolling until I choose my own setup. I have also been loaned a Sigma 28-200mm lens that has poor auto focus. It is ok to manually focus but I want something a bit easier to learn with.

As it's only a short term answer I was after a cheapish starter lens. The two I have been looking at are the kit lens (18-55mm) and a canon 28-80mm. Which do you guys think would be the way to go?

I have been looking at this Canon 28-80mm which seems an ok starter lens (but very cheap/low quality) but see a lot of people go for the 'kit lens' to get started. :help:

The 18-55 kit lens is good for a cheap 'tester' lens. If you are pretty confident that you will take up the hobby properly then you might be better off spending a litle more and getting something you will be happy with for longer...

Bear in mind the 10d only takes EF fitment lenses (not the newer EF-S) so the 18-55mm lens will not fit as standard. However it can be modified.

EDIT: Beaten :D

I was aware that it only takes EF fitment, however I have seen some 18-55mm lenses advertised in EF in the past.

As for the Nifty Fifty, I didn't want to restrict myself with a fixed lens to start off with as it would be the only lens for a while (probably a short while if the bug sinks it's teeth in hard enough)

My first DLSR was a 10D with a Canon 24-85mm. I kept it for a couple of years and was a good grounding. I'd recommend checking that out.

looked into nifty fifty £75 max? good lens. I started with an old 17 - 35 couldnt tell you more than that but certainly wasnt L series
