okidoki... I really miss my 10-20mm Sigma for my canon, so what a good and relatively inexpensive ultra wide angle lens for a D700?

I thought I could get the 10-20mm again but was told this would not work on a FF body?

I am not looking for perfect quality and uber fast apetures, I just need a good wide angle lens for playing around with....

Any ideas?

Nikkor 14-24 is meant to be about as good as it gets. People are even using it MF on Canon bodies its so good!

Not cheap but wider than a wide thing on FF (wider than you 10-20 was!)

Yeah I thought about that lens, but after the purchase of all my new lighting gear and the 70-200 I am several thousand quid lighter lol, so buying that lens may result in a swift devorce :D

... oh hang on

Seriously though, something a lot cheaper would be nice ;)

the 14-24 is a great lens but I am also skint from buying other gear. I bought the Sigma 14mm f2.8 second hand and its a great lens. See if you can find one on Ebay.

its a great lens but if you want something cheaper why not look for the sigma 12-24 instead. Its a full frame lens, and about 1/3rd price. Make sure you try before you buy, there's alot of bad copies around

The Sigma 15-30 on the D700 offers the same field of view as the Sigma 10-20 on a crop camera.

Excellent lens, although like most very wide angles you can't use attach filters to use on full frame.

The Sigma 12-24 if you can find a good one is good, but I had to try 3 samples before I found one without decentering problems (extreme soft right hand side). The one I got was very good.

Not Ultra wide but the Sigma 24-70 is very nice on my D700 especially for portrait stuff....

Nice an cheap as well.

Nikkor 17-35?

Almost the same as your old 10-20 and will still take filters unlike the 14-24 (which optically is just the most amazing thing ever, if you don't need filters, get this and you will divorce the wife and marry it instead)

I assume this only applies to older second hand ones, not new from retailer?

Already have the 24-70 2.8 mate, need to go wider :D

How about a Sigma 14mm f2.8 if you don't mind a fixed lens?

Thats a good shout, I shall have a flick round the net for prices.

Interesting, I shall have a read up on this lens, thanks mate :)

'Fraid not - in fact, I would only buy this second hand as its poor value new, and ask for some sample shots (preferable taken with a D700 or D3 at 12mm, 18mm and 24mm).

Best way of avoiding a dud. Its not worth the new price, so get a second hand one.

I tried two from the Classifieds here (both duds, in both cases the sellers let me try them and send payment if I was happy, or return it if I found problems ).

Got mine on Ebay in the end, great seller who sent me full NEFs to my requirements.

If you get a good 12-24 its excellent, but you do need to see samples, and the sample need to have been shot on a full frame camera, as test shots on a crop camera won't reveal de-centering.

I use the nikon 17-35 f2.8 on the D3 and it's a lovely lens, problem is that it's in a comparable price range to the 14-24 :( It's also no longer made so a bit more difficult to find

Since I finally managed to acquire mine here are a few links: by Thom Hogan and Bjørn Rørslett here and here.

It is really really sharp wide opened and detail resolution is fantastic - I tested it on friends D700 and its a dream lens on that camera. On my D200 it now stays on most of the time. I posted a sample photo I did a few days back with that lens on my D200 here.

It is slightly under especially used - 14-24 goes for nearly a 1000 used and 17-35 you can find for around 700.

If you gave me £1300 and asked me to pick the 14-24 or the 17-35 I'd go for the 17-35 every time.

The 14-24 may be the "best" but its wasted on a crop camera, while on full frame it's almost too wide for many applications, while 24mm isn't long enough either in many cases.

Coupled with the no creative filter issue, and it makes one of Nikon's best engineering feats but one of their most useless lenses in real terms.

Just my (probably controversial!) opinion :D

No PD you are spot on with your eval of the 14-24.... but you know you just want to overlook all those faults and fall in love with the absolute lushness of what it *can* do :D

I use the Sigma 12-24mm on a D700 and have been learning a lot about wideangle photography and getting some good results. A very good way of starting with wideangles on a FX.

Another + vote for the Sigma 12-24. Maybe I've just been lucky with all the Sigmas I've bought but I've never had a problem with any of them, new, nearly new or well used.

Contrary to belief, you CAN fit filters to this lens but they'll have to be gel filters, cut to fit behind the rear element using the template provided when the lens is new. Not so easy to use graduated filters but that effect is relatively easy to replicate in PP anyway. I've heard that it's also possible (awkward but possible) to use the bigger Cokin filters and BluTak (or similar) to attach filters to the lens hood.

I would definitely take a look at the Nikon AFD 18mm-35mm f3.5/4.5 lens.
I owned one for a number of years and have a number of friends who own and use it on FX cameras and it produces top quality results.
It can be picked up for a little over £200 s/h here or on ebay

Agree 100% with PD, the 14-24 is one of the few lenses I have sold (the other being the 18-200mm). Optically it's great but it's too wide for landscapes and the sheer weight combined with lack of filters make it pretty impractical.
