hi all i have a canon 55-250 lens, would like to upgrade to
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM
is this worth purchasing thank you sam.

That is not much of an increase in focal length.

You would be much better off with something like the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary.

Or you could wait and purchase the sigma 100-400mm if you want a smaller package. As said above you won't get much reach over your 55-250mm.

I have heard good things about the Canon 100-400 Mark 1 - it seems to be a reasonable price too, on the secondhand market. Pop to your local camera shop and have a go of a few to see which fits the bill, perhaps?

hi guys could be a toss up between the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and the
Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM which is used, your views please,
many thanks sam.

I'll throw a vote in for the slightly cheaper/older Sigma 150-500. Got some lovely wildlife shots with mine and a bargain pre-owned.

I've used both quite recently, and although I'll always have a big soft spot for the Canon 100-400 Mk1, the Siggy was just a bit better in almost every way. Not by a lot (aside from the stabiliser, which is leaps and bounds better than the 100-400 Mk1!) but certainly noticeably so.

Also the Sigma was a lot better than the Canon between 400 and 600mm. ;)

They're rather different in the hand, and if you can get to compare them both, that will probably swing you one way or the other. Canon 100-400 is a big lens but still reasonably manageable and a big jump in focal length from your current 55-250. Sigma 150-600 is a very big lens by any measure, more specialist, and not so easy to get the best from.

I have had both. I sold the 100-400 after 2 weeks as my 70-300L took sharper pictures I could crop tighter and they were still better. The Sigma was not out then so I got a 300f4is and 1.4tc which is super sharp.

The Sigma I had for a year and only sold it after getting a 500mm prime as I was always at 500mm+ on the Sigma.
I am considering getting another as it was so much more practical. At the moment I still use my 300mmf4 with 1.4TC as a light weight option.
My vote would be Sigma first
Canon 300mmf4is +1.4tc second
Canon70-300mmL third
Canon100-400mk1 never again. I know lots of people still like it but things really have moved on. It's like a car with no air con.
