Zine Swap V: January - November 2022

This looks interesting. I've been wanting to get some zines made up myself but didn't have the foggiest where to start!

I did make a book for university using InDesign but when it printed the colours were off as I export everything as Adobe RGB and InDesign was working in the CMYK colour space. I was told in uni that whenever exporting a PDF for printing to use that colour space and I wasn't going to try and re-edit every image to bring the colours back to how they should have been. I presume that the colour space can be changed to Adobe RGB so what I see is what I get?

With that out of the way, what's the cost implication of joining in? I know that it depends on how many join in and therefore the quanity changes with postage factored in also but is there a preferred place to get the zines made up and is there a unit cost?

Lots of zine making info in this thread:

The costs are very dependent on how many join the swap and the size/thickness of your zine.

Most people here use either Mixam or DoxDirect for printing the zine. The former is more cost effective for colour.

Mixam do a handy quote calculator https://mixam.co.uk/zines

This is going to be my first zine swap and I looked through this thread and the linked threads/links and that just about got me through making my first zine :)

getting some really weird results on the Mixam quote page atm, changing from A5 portrait to A5 landscape, 170g with 350g cover price goes from £24 to £243 !!!!, change to 170g/170g price reverts to £24. Dropping the paper weight to 150g with 170g cover, price goes back to £243???? #confused

<edit> Ahhh it changes printer, odd that the "cheap" print option which I've used for landscape at higher paper weights before isn't available now

Hi all, I called Mixam, as when I produced a 'book' for university and exported it as a PDF using InDesign and using the CMYK colour space, the colour was way off. I thought it was because my screen wasn't in that colour space and if it were ever to be printed it would be back to normal. After speaking with the lady at Mixam she informed me this wasn't the case as Adobe RGB is a much wider colour space and I should change my colour space in Lr or Ps to either gracol or forga and then retouch the colours back.

This will take me ages as I was planning on producing more than was needed for the Zine share here in the one design and producing different zines for me to promote myself and hopefully sell as well to gain some exposure and traction.

Does anyone know of any work around as trying to get the colours back to how the original looks could be tricky and not be exactly the same.

What are you using to assemble the zines - Affinity Publisher? if so you can set the colourspace within that.

Hi David, I'm using InDesign as I have access to that through my university course as we get the full adobe package of software.

I'm in Photoshop show, followed an online tutorial where it said to convert the image first to CYMK in Photoshop before saving it and inserting it into the publication software. So far I've tried a dozen images in Photoshop and gone to Image>Mode>CMYK Colour and I've not noticed a change in appearance visually in some but others you can see colour shifts:

If you look at the blue on the tokens machine as well as the green of the ride you can see what I mean.

Can you not set the Colourspace in InDesign??

I have assumed control in Ian’s absence! At present it’s still going ahead- I will contact people around 7th November to get committed numbers, if we ‘all’ feel that there is not enough to make it worthwhile then we can revise accordingly.
Hi folks. Just wanted to give an update as I think you guys deserve it...
Way back in January, my boss went off sick (we're a team of 2) so I took on his work. By April, with no support from my company, things were getting a bit too much and my stress levels were through the roof (I'm also an unpaid carer for my wife who is registered disabled). In May I started getting chest pains which took a while to diagnose as coming from my heart. On recommendation from the health specialists, I stepped away from work to focus on my recovery and in September I was given the news I (and my boss) was to be made redundant. It's all been a huge change for me, and photography has taken a real back seat.
So thanks David for taking the reins. With such a great volunteer, I feel as though I can step away from this without too much guilt. I need to focus on my immediate future, both in terms of finance and health.
Good luck with the swap.

Ian, so sorry to hear that and wishing you all the best

Best of luck with your recovery, Ian. Good luck in the solution to addressing the financial situation and thanks for everything you add here.

Really sad to hear this Ian, so I hope you feel better asap, and that the company are giving you a very good payoff, to allow you to move forward in a good way. You have been missed on the site, so I hope in time photography and your contributions are going to be back on your personal agenda.

So let's give Ian something to look at. whilst he's doing the important stuff.
Where are we in the process? Should I have made a Zine by now? Should I at least have images to pout in a Zine by now? :$
Can I suggest we do the usual swap bit but you make sure to give everyone Ian's address so we can make sure he gets ALL the Zines (both of them ;) )

Its under control - I will start asking for commitment next week (commit by Nov 7th) - I will then message everyone who has committed with the recipient list (including Ian) so they know how many zines to print.
You then have 3 weeks or so to produce the zine and ship out nominally in early December. You can of course ship sooner :)

Not you can make a zine from shooting to receiving the zine back in about 7-10 days, so don't panic, my last zine was shot on a single day, assembled the next and then sent for print - so no need to panic! Of course if you have no ideas then it might take longer................

OK, so this is a little early (better to be so?) - this I think is the list of possible participants, if your name is not here and you want to take part please post in this thread to confirm.

I'm looking for formal commitment by the end of next week (Fri 11th November), and please PM me your real name and address. I will post the final numbers on Monday 14th November and PM each participant with a list of postal addresses.

We are aiming to get printed zines out early in December

Not this time for me. I've no zine ideas at the present.

Count me in. No idea what I’m going to do so apologise if mine turns to the usual rubbish but hopefully it will move me to get out with the camera.

I am still a no unfortunately

I am *hoping* to be part of this too - need to make final selection later this week & as per timetable will confirm 7th Nov. I need something to push me a bit.

I'm really sorry, I've just not been able to pull this together in time. If it's too late to be released then I don't mind contributing financially.

Toni, thats ok, the zine 'project' has had no money changes hands 'rule' - but if other participants want to send you a copy of their completed zine, then thats something you can arrange between yourselves!

Once I have all the PM 'd addresses I 'll put together a final participant list :)

I'm afraid, I am also going to have to drop out, I did suggest in my pm that I was struggling with time, and having spent the weekend on it, most of yesterday in the garage and all of this morning with the plumber, I realise I'm not going to get it done.

It also seems the time I spent with Publisher earlier on in the year so I could just "drop the images in", has somehow imploded and I have no idea what has happened. Lots of weird issues e.g my picture frame and pictures match in dimensions but the placed pictures are coming in a totally different ratio. My master pages with one picture frame per page across a spread are now randomly showing two picture frames per spread or only one picture frame per spread. The list goes on, and one of the disadvantages of preparing well in advance is that I've forgotten exactly what I did and how I did it. So I'm going to need to rewatch the Publisher tutorials all over again.

Having got this far, I'm still going to finish it off, and when I do, I will offer a copy to people on the list, but I can't take part in the formal project.

Sorry everyone.

@myotis - just a word of warning about Publisher, my (admittedly out of date) version of Publisher doesn't allow exporting in CMYK format and unless you provide a printer with a CMYK version there is no saying that the colours in the printed version will be anything like what you expect.
