Week 12

I don't normally do borders, and generally I feel that a picture should tell it's own story, but on this occasion I felt that the addition of the title works to change the whole meaning of what the viewer sees, and the black border was chosen to tie in with that.

Week 13 Quad

Saw these chaps walking down the road in front of the car so screeched to a halt, jumped out and ran after them leaving the kids wondering why I had abandoned them when they eventually looked up from their mobile phones and ipods and gameboys. As soon as I saw them I thought QUAD and wasn't going to let them get away.

I had already missed an opportunity earlier in the day when the council workman came down the road on a quad bike spraying the weeds on the pavement looking like a Mad Max in a dayglo yellow safety jacket. Couldn't quite get my camera set up in time - as my wife said I would have been better off with a point and click!

Week 16 Stare

Playing a bit of a joker here in an effort to catch up.

The shot was taken earlier this year when the snow was just starting to melt, not taken for this project but was based on the poor old snowman 'staring' at his eyes and nose with his empty eye sockets. While I was trying to think of something different to fit the theme it suddenly came back to me that I had this shot I could use.

Welcome back and well done Ian. It's hard enough keeping up every week, let alone catching up. I think the two you have chosen for Mechanical and Close work great and are the best of them.

Produce I really like, although I'm not sure the sheep would agree :D.

Being a bit slow today, it took me a moment or 5 (after reading the text) to work out stare, and it works well and gits the theme nicely.

Really like the snowman shot with the "where are my EYES?" thing going on.

It looks a little soft to me though. Easily could be my eyes though. And something about the composition isn't quite right, but I can't put my finger on it. Again - probably just me.

Do like the produce shot though. Simple, and you're right - the title does change the perception of what the image is trying to say. I think titles are important to photographs. They help give clues. "Sprout In A Puddle" though... :chuckle:

Ian.

Well done on the catch up (y)

I love the snowman staring at his eyes. Completely brilliant.

My favourite of the recent uploads has to be the black and white tractor for mechanical. Lovely lighting and tones. The subject suits the B&W conversion perfectly.

Ian.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.

I think you are probably right about the composition and softness.
I have a tendency to crop everything very tight, so deliberately gave it more negative space but I think that may be a mistake. Any suggestions on a better crop very welcome.

I also tend to sharpen every shot close to the point where it makes your eyes bleed, so on this one I left it soft as I was afraid it might destroy the 'look' or illusion if the detail was heightened. I tried a sharper version but it didn't seem to add anything to the overall shot.

Part of this project for me is to try different things and so it really helps to get feedback - I am maybe doing things differently for the sake of it rather than the benefit of the picture.

Thank you for the nice comments. I have steered clear of B&W and very rarely attempt it -to do B&W properly is a specialist subject and skill in it's own right. Not sure why, but I just wanted to see what it looked like in B&W, and it is encouraging that others like it, although i have to say I still much prefer the colour version.

Thanks, I am using a lot of jokers and shoehorns and crowbars to catch up but I think that is better than getting stressed over something that is meant to be enjoyable.

Wise words.

WEEK 19: INGREDIENTS

Wanted to do something with my speedlites this week. Came across a bottle of shampoo with all sorts of chemically ingredients and started trying to light it as a clean product shot to show the ingredients, which was very dull. Added the flowers to show what the producers would like us to believe were the ingredients. Not sure it works as a shot, but I really want to keep up so it will have to do for now...

Hi - as others have said, interesting idea & lighting, but I think I'd have lost the flowers and homed in on the actual list leaving a little black either side of the bottle to keep the lovely contrast.

Phil

I quite like it... I see what you were trying to do, and it's a clever take on the theme.

I think it would have said more with less if you know what I mean. Peel off the label and just have the liquid to better show off the flowers.

Just another take though. Well done for finding something original.

Ian.

Ian, love the lighting and colours in that one... I think I'm gonna agree on the bottle, and go along with the zooming in on the list of ingredients to fit the theme.
