Thanks Bob, Any ideas on what lighting I'd need? I'm interested in the usual bugs and flowers and would use it mainly outdoors. I'm assuming 100mm will give me enough range not to scare off the critters but I'm then assuming I'll need extra lighting.

Hi Jambo, I've got the canon 55-250mm on the same camera and I can vouch that it is a very good lens for the money. My copy is very sharp - was very pleased shooting flying birds and animals at the zoo. The lens is less than £150 on Amazon - bargain IMO.

I watched one the other day. It sat on a branch which bent over just close enough to get to a peanut feeder where it ate peanuts one after the other for at least 10 minutes. I was surprised when it flew away - even more surprised it didn't burst, greedy pecker.
