The best way would be to get a neutral grey target into a picture under the same lighting as the subject and sample off that.
I think that if that is not possible then looking for something that should be neutral grey in the image is better than looking for something that is white (but not...
If the fluorescent ceiling lights dominate you are going to want to be shooting at around 1/50s exposure to limit the weird colour problems you can get if you shoot "out of phase" with the lights...
Generally the convoluted awfulness comes as 'requirements' from up above. Programmers left to themselves will (mostly) produce efficient (but ugly) interfaces.
You need to get some padded cycling shorts if you are doing any sort of distance. They really make saddles a load more comfortable.
I wear a pair of baggy shorts over the Lycra for decencies sake :)

A photo of my god daughter camping in wales.
I really like the shot but it is lacking something.. and I am not quite sure what. The image above is more or less straight from the camera.
It feels a bit 'muddy' to me, and I am concerned that if I print it she will fade into the grass. What...

Camera Canon EOS 40D
Exposure 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture f/6.3
Focal Length 300 mm
ISO Speed 200
Exposure Bias +1/3 EV
Lens EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM
I have not done anything specific in processing, a bit of sharpening for screen happens during the export to flickr.
I think I just missed focus on the eye, and the quality of the lens makes it a bit soft anyway (EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM) but I am not unhappy with it :)
If you are in south west Wales the trip to Skomer is well worth it.
