    Elvenpath

thanks... Galadriel is a princess of the Elves in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". the Elves inhabit a forest that looks a bit like this, called Lothlorien, a magical place where decay and evil cannot penetrate... and this image seemed to evoke that same sense of timeless life and beauty...

    Elvenpath

the trail along the Skokomish River at Staircase, on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, takes on a mystical look with a touch of Orton... the pathway to the realm of Galadriel?

play on! (5 pics) amateur rugby

these were the Eastside Rugby Club (Redmond, WA) Axemen and the Bend, OR Roughriders. as for the focus, sometimes the players outrun the AF, even with USM! LOL! it was also a rather dreary day, light wasn't very good, so i was shooting wide open to keep the shutter speed up. hopefully i'll...

play on! (5 pics) amateur rugby

LOL! yep, we do have a few crazies here that get out and do battle without helmets and pads. i was one myself, many years ago. played 3 years at a prep school in Victoria, BC, and two more on my college team in Tacoma, WA. i recal the first time i saw the game, i was scared stiff thought i'd...

play on! (5 pics) amateur rugby

something a bit out of the ordinary for me... i rarely do sports photography, but today i thought i'd try something different, so i went to a playfield park a few miles away to shoot a rugby game between two amateur clubs. the light wasn't great, especially at the beginning, though it got better...

    trumpeter swans

the sun came out today, first really sunny day we've had in 3-4 weeks, so i went to the park near my house to see if i could get some decent shots of the trumpeter swans i'd heard were there. trumpeters are pretty uncommon here... i've seen them along some of the estuaries in the northern part...

    Ursa Major

the stars are WAY beyond the hyperfocal distance for any earth bound camera and lens; manually focus at infinity, and then back off just a hair, and you should be good. don't know what your lens focal length and settings were for this, but you could also calculate the hyperfocal distance for...

    Machu Picchu - Peru

outstanding! great composition, and the light is perfect - the sun on the ruins but nowhere else really highlights them wonderfully! i'd love to go there, but i'm afraid my asthma would not handle 11,000 feet well... :(

    Foggy morning

took a walk at the park a week ago, got there about 10:30 AM (yes, it really is this dark here on a day like this in winter!), before the fog lifted, and got this photo of some old, half-rotted pilings, remnants of a decades-gone cross-lake ferry dock. i like the way they seem to march off into...

    Friday's sunset (12/5/08)

hi Hunter, yeah, the weather socks in about the end of October, and i don't get nearly as many opportunities to get out and shoot as i'd like... that's the problem with living where i do... :( but for now at least, i'm kinda stuck here, 'cause this is where my job is, and i'm at the age...

    Friday's sunset (12/5/08)

dang it, i hate those dust-bunnies! i thought i'd got rid of 'em all... :( the orange is just the color of the clouds. if i'd metered on them, instead of on the bright spot right above the horizon, it would have produced much less color. i suppose i could tone down the saturation a bit...

    Friday's sunset (12/5/08)

actually, the white balance is okay. that's the color of the sky... it all depends on where you take your metering from. i intentionally metered this on the brightest spot in the sky, which tends to make everything else darker and the colors deeper and more saturated. in these, the cloud...

    Friday's sunset (12/5/08)

i was out with my camera taking advantage of a late-afternoon sun break (living here in western Washington, you learn to make the most of any glimpse of sun this time of year!), and i noticed the clouds looked like they might make for a nice sunset. i'd pretty much lost interest in sunset shots...

    sunshine and wood ducks

thanks! i love these little guys, but they can be scarce...

    fox sparrow and spotted towhee

thanks, everyone, for the kind words... i find it interesting, too, to see the birds you have on that side of the pond, and the names... you folks have more tits over there than Hugh Hefner!
