A highly scientific atomic explanation of 'light sensitive materials' and photographic developing!

I always took pride in being able to explain how film photography works but this just blew my mind. From a 1960s photo year book. It almost reads as poetry. From a 1960s Photo Year book!

Studio Lighting Outdoors With A Mamiya RZ67?

Hello... So I've been wanting to experiment with this sort of strange balanced portrait where the subject is lit by flash (I have an elinchrom portable unit) yet the natural light in the background is still visible. I've seen a few photographers achieve this and I'm yet to try it for a project...

Beginner Product photography - lighting and best time of day

Hi everyone, I've been reading some articles and it appears to me that the perceived wisdom is that when dealing in product photography (with natural light only) one should choose a south-facing window - early morning being bluer light, before dusk a more golden light. But the idea is to...

10-stop and Cokin filter holder issue

Hi I am currently using a screw in filter for long exposures (10 stop filter). there is no light leek around the filter as the filter is screwed onto the lens. I will not be switching to square filters, and the first system I will be trying is the Cokin system. I just got the holder first to...

    Lightweight tripod for hiking

Hi, I'm looking for some recommendations for a lightweight tripod to take on long hikes, preferably one that when collapsed is small and can handle a Canon 5D Mark III + lens (biggest being Canon 70-200). I currently have the Manfrotto 055 (Aluminium) + Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head but...

Fireworks after Southport Airshow night flights

Went to the airshow on Friday, unfortunately it wasn't dark enough for long exposure on most planes, however I did like this shot of the fireworks. Could have cropped it, however I did like the sky to the left of the frame. Sharper version on flickr. Southport Fireworks by Thomas Green, on...

    Big, soft and overhead!

My Strobist gear (so all portable flash, mostly YN stuff) is all getting a bit tired, used (and a little broken); a friend has asked that I do some portraiture stuff and I've always wanted to use something (relatively) big, soft and overhead (with some nice ring-flash on-axis fill). However, my...

    Great Orme

I was lucky to get very dramatic clouds and light when going up the Great Orme in Llandudno. I stitched a panorama in Photoshop, introduced a colour cast which I think added for drama and surrealism. There is always a good shot waiting at that place to be taken.
