How fantastic is this.

Over the last few months taking footy snaps i've really struggled in low light. I've been shooting Aperture priority with Auto ISO. The most frustrating part has been the paranoia of watching those damn shutter speed digits in the bottom left hand corner.

However, just been messing around taking indoor pictures of the radiator..... as you do, and discovered that the auto ISO function works in manual. Therefore i can set my shutter speed AND aperture and let the camera sort out the ISO.

Simples, as long as i set a reasonable max ISO.

For some strange reason i just assumed the auto ISO wouldn't work in manual.

However, got a tad annoyed over the weekend when all my snow snaps came out mid tone grey - as i'd left my ISO settings on auto :bonk::bonk:

That is when you need to use the EV +/- ;)

Leave it in manual, and auto ISO ... just tweak the EV setting, +1 to +2 would have done on the snow (add light to white).

Indeed, auto iso is actually a really useful tool that I'd always ignored in the past but am now finding myself using it 90% of the time. Comes into it's own in manual mode. Just have to remember to turn it off when I'm using a tripod

Now i've found it, it will be extremely useful.

Quick one for Martyn, if i use my + EV in manual i assume it will increase the aperture to get more light. However, won't the Auto ISO then kick in to get me back to a "normal" exposure?

I hope so otherwise i'm going to be spending a few more days taking pictures of radiators!!!!!!!

My head is spinning in exposure triangles...... its driving me insane

If you are using Auto ISO in "Manual",the Aperture and Shutter Speed will stay fixed as you set them, adjusting the EV will actually alter the ISO to give the desired effect of increasing or decreasing the exposure.
