Sorry for such a basic question but got to start somewhere??

Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson

Get it from Amazin for about £10. Possibly the best book you'll read to get you going

On the left hand dial, turn to P and then read the manual for around 2 weeks.:D

I love taking photo's when out with my friends and on holidays, but up until now have only ever had a point and shoot camera. I decided before Christmas that I wanted to learn a bit more about Photography and to take a hobby to the next level. I am about to start an Introduction to Digital Photography course and am currently saving for my 1st DSLR camera - Still not sure which one though!!

Anyway having been doing alot more reading than posting on these forums, (so far!!) I keep coming upon posts raving about the above mentioned book. I decided to order a copy and it arrived today, and although I have only had a quick glance through it I can tell already it is going to be a kind of Photographers must have book and at £10 is definately a good buy.

Don't limit yourself to a DSLR, if you are still experimenting with what you like to take photos of, then a bridge camera is a cheaper option. You still get the same features as a DSLR, but because you can't change the lens, and the sensor is smaller the quality is (arguably) not as good.

I keep badgering on like this because I have a bridge. It cost less than £200, and an equivalent DSLR set up would have cost probably £1k. But I can do all the things that a middle range DSLR can do (and some they can't). I do want a DSLR, and when funds allow I will treat myself. But I know that when I get one I will want certain things from it because of my experience with the bridge.

And as a bridge is cheaper, you get to start shooting sooner!
