So where do we all stand on
images with borders around them?
(I am specifically taking about images posted here)

I used to be against them but more and more are being posted
with them.
*shock horror* even I have posted one now

Does it detract from or enhance the image

The ones with the info in them ( I believe cowasaki produced the programme for TP'ers) seem to be quite popular and I can see
why, but does that look untidy when the EXIF could be just as easily left in?.

one final thing how big is to big ?
A subtle line a couple of Px wide ( with or without a shadow)
Double lines
single thick ( several Px's wide) lines
the possibilities are almost endless
So what say you

I won't even mention watermarks and © symbols ( just yet :D )

Personally I like pics with borders, but it can either make or break a photo. I will always put a simple border on pics now and will often post with exif too.

I like to be able to see the exif on other peoples pics, so ....... post mine too. Not that it's ever been of use to anyone I expect!!

Don't like watermarks etc all over the pic, but a subtle one in the corner is fine, I'm just not clever enough to do it:thinking:

All in all, I'll go with enhance the image as long as it fits in with the overall image (what can ever be wrong with simple black and white border?) Watermarks? Not for me, I find them too distracting.:gag:

I wouldn't dream of printing a pic with a border though, that's what my framers is for - If I ever got to that stage!!

ha ha bored chris :naughty:

anyhow i alway used to put borders on all my shots as i felt it finished them . then as i have grown in my photography i rarley use them now " as i dont think they need them imo anyway"

just my two pennies worth

md:thumbs:

Personally I don't like borders but a small black line round them does not worry me too much.
I do appreciate the ones that have the exif in them, they are obviously a lot wider than I like, but I see it as information rather than a border.
Drop shadows and that sort of thing annoy me so if I am in an odd mood and looking at pictures I exit them very quickly

, I'm just not clever enough to do it:thinking:
They are quite easy if you are just looking for something simple
you can get an image on a plain background then "define brush pre set" (CS3 > edit) then you have a "stamp" that you can use in "brushes"

ha ha bored chris
Totally friggin................ :D

I used to put a white border and drop shadow on all of my shots, but I grew to thinking it looked a bit tacky *ducks for cover*. So I have simply gone back to no border or water mark at all (though I do use a hidden watermark).

I don't like border at all now. I find the ones with info in them quite distracting, but can understand why people use them. The borders with drop shadows that are not complete really bug me.

Seems fairly "even stevens" at the moment,
and hardly any posts....................
strange I thought this would be quite emotive
Ah well I must try harder :D

now if you put a photo up with and without that will get people thinking

Good point I will have a rummage

i dislike borders, but i always use them if im posting on tinternet using cowasakis script, saves me having to type out all the exif, or copy it into posts, specially if (gasp shock horror) i post on a couple of forums ;)

Not looking for C&C on the images just whether borders per se' work or not

Without (obviously :D )

No Chris. I prefer it without :D

Step away from the border action Chris ... come on you can do it :D

By the way, that is one gorgeous cat

Thanks Jo
I am undecided TBH I do like them more than I used to but............

I think it depends on the border tbh. Got to say I don't generally like the type you posted chris, the drop shadow ones, but a plain simple order can really enhance an image. As for exif....hmmm...sometimes I find it useful, others just irritating and distracting, I think thats a 'mood' thing :naughty:

Hmm interesting all the "anti's" are posting only one "pro"
there are a lot of people on here using them but its seems as they are not that popular

Me? I am still squarely on the fence :D

........ others just irritating and distracting, I think thats a 'mood' thing :naughty:

I am NOT going anywhere near THAT argument :D

LOL... you only have to look a the picture of the cat... one a lovely pure image and the other has a load of distracting rubbish around the edge (no offence intended).

None taken thats why I posted them both, for comparison

I prefer without, especially with regards to posting shooting info on it; when I'm looking at a photo, I'm not thinking about what lens and body and setting combination is used, and posting that sort of thing detracts from the photo for me.

It's sorta like if all songs were ID3 tagged with what instruments were used to make it and in what tuning. It's nice to know, but is it really needed when you're looking at the end product?

Okay, so if the colours blend with the background colour of the forum it makes sense to help define the framing of the picture, but otherwise seems a bit excessive for purpose.

I don't mind using borders on websites but would never (well, not up to now) go to print with borders on.

I also use borders and logos for press release and promotor images for race series, makes them look different!

As for watermarks, as I've had images used without my permission, I tend to watermark so I know they've been nicked, then sell them the proper version! Plus, it's free advertising!!!!

Carl.

I use the drop shadow when posting on the forum as I like it and think it helps to lift the picture off the page, especially if the edges of the image are very light in colour.

Chris, I think your comparison photos are not quite fair as you have shown the bordered image with a border AND drop shadow which looks pretty awful and throws the picture itself off centre within the EXIF border.

simple borders do have a place on the www
the problem you're up against is hi-key pictures on a white background/skin and low-key pictures on a dark background/skin
you just can't tell where the picture ends
so a simple (one or two pixels) border just to define the edges is handy

I must admit I am rather taken with the exif data and even drop shadows - but they're both new to me - so I may get bored ...

IMHO
YMMV
caveat emptor

I prefer without and wouldn't dream about adding a border to a photo I intended to print (for any purpose). I reckon if the photo is a good one, it doesn't need any artificial additions to draw you in or tidy it up.

That said, when re-sizing and generally degrading the image for publication to the web (including the Flickr ones) I tend to add a border round everything

:cuckoo:

Not sure why, it's either a habit I've gotten into to display the Exif easily, or the simple fact that all of my pics need the aforementioned artificial additions to draw you in or tidy it up.

on this forum, due to the 800 pixel limit, i would rather no border, so you get more image(no, i dont want the image size increased as it wouldnt fit on my monitor)

they dont really irritate me or bother me in truth, but the bigger image is better;)

It's amazing how much smaller the image with the border seems to be. In this instance the border really does detract from the image.

I agree.

I generally don't mind others... not keen on fancy ones but a simple thin white and black line when needed seems to fit with my preconceived expectations. ;)

That is pretty much how I feel - sadly the new format of anonymous POTY competition means if I want to be able to title up my photo, and retain some ability to modify my posting (if I get a better shot later in the month for example) I seem to be stuck with using a border.

I had some problems with my image export process that meant the EXIF was always stripped, wasn't save for web, and I couldn't resolve it, even setting the keep the EXIF intact options didn't work. So I took to adding a simple plain white border with a real thin black one just within it, with just the EXIF data within it, and occasionally a title along the top. I quite like it and saved me having to type the EXIF information out for every picture I posted. I do think some borders are way over the top though. Here's a with and without from me... (hope you don't mind Chris... it's for a comparison with a simpler border :))

Which do you prefer ? The edit routine on photbucket has stripped out the EXIF on the second one, but normal processing now would leave it intact. I only put the borders on for posting on the net though.

Personally, and it is a personal thing, I prefer without. A good photo is a good photo, with or without. I've seen examples where photos have been 'dressed' to look good but to me they look worse. If one needs to put border round a light coloured shot like fabs said, just have a thin key line. It's all that you need. Any half decent shot will stand without borders. Just my 2p.

The discussion seems to have livened up a little :D

Carl.

I don't see why they should / would be printed with a boarder either
there are "aftermarket frames" for that :)

Fair point but not everyone ( well quite a few actually,) do not post pictures
at the max 800 x 800

But you don't go to an art gallery and see pictures hung in clip frames though. ;)
:D And I take you point about it looking off center Marc

.

Another fair point if you wish leave in the EXIF
but that is only any good for everyone else
Selfish to remove it? I guess thats a whole new thread
And no problem with the comparisons John, it's another example

I am in the habit of putting a 5px white line then a 5px black line as a border round the pictures I post on here which on an 800px pictures gives it just enough to make the border noticable. For me, a small border just helps to highlight the boundaries of the picture when posting it on a forum. No-one would expect a photo to be printed and hung on a wall without a border so why be so against a border on a monitor.

I's not too keen on the really over the top borders though. The one above with the EXIF data along the bottom is OK but I don't like the ones where the info goes all the way round the image.

There is no right and wrong answer really. It depends on the image and each viewers personal opinion.

I always use a 10px white and a 20px black border on mine - mainly because I like them!!!

I do the same on Flikr.

Wouldn't use one except for posting on the web though.

I don't use a watermark...........but only because I haven't yet worked out how to do one!! My exif doesn't get stripped out when I resize for the web, so is available to anyone who cares to look.

I use them as part of my photography business - I use cowasakis border script, as I can generate 2-300 photos from a rally, and using a batch script really saves me time. It keeps all my photos uniform, and I feel the border I use is simple, professional, and makes the photo stand out, whilst including just enough information that anyone seeing the image anywhere on t'internet can contact me.
