Hi all,

I am looking at getting a D700 within the next 1-2 weeks, + a couple of SB900's, lenses etc.

Are there any recommended suppliers? And any to be avoided?

I've seen low prices on DigitalRev, however they seem to be based in Hong Kong which means no camera warrenty and I have seen quite a few comments regarding vat charges once you have the item.

Digital rev, camerabox, etc are all grey imports, look at dealers like cameraworld, parks, jessops, jacobs etc at least with them you'll get uk stock with a full Nikon backed UK warranty (and the extra free years warranty when you register it with nikon).

Have a word wih Stuart at Digital Depot, and he might be able to do you a good deal. I know a few here have bought from him.

Might be worth comparing the prices with bricks and mortar stores.

When I bought my D90 the difference in price was small enough to warrant me driving to Calumet in Manchester. You can also get interest free credit on it as well.

Andy

EDIT: just had a quick look and digital depots advertised price is £10 more than calumet. Stuart may do discount for TP members though, I'm not sure.

If you're buying a Nikon body, buy it from a UK Nikon dealer, otherwise all you'll get is a 12 month seller warranty (at best) as Nikon warranties are market-specific, so if you're buying from HK it means you'd need to send it back there for warranty work, negating any savings made on the purchase...

In the past I've always found Jessops to be the cheapest, however nowadays I reckon Stuart at Digital Depot would probably comfortably beat their prices.

I wouldn't buy something this expensive from Hong Kong. It's a long way to send it back for warranty work. Go for a proper UK Nikon dealer.

Jessops, Digital Depot and Kerso seem to be the place to buy.

You'd have the same problem with a Nikon body from Ian, no official UK warranty, which is why I assume his main stock-in-trade is Canon...

He did beat the price Jessops gave me. Plus they are Nikon specialists so UK stock and a 2 year warranty.

Thanks for all the info :)

Its a mine field out there :D

no one has mentioned warehouse express. They seem to be cheaper than Jessops buy around £100 on some of the lenses I was looking at. Grey imports again or just good deals?

Got mine from Grays of Westminster. They also have some very good finance packages. Bought the grip with it, got a good deal on the package. They only do Nikon, give them a call.

I've used Dales and Clifton Cameras and both have given good service

One thing about buying abroad. Nikon lenses come with an International warranty so you can buy and get serviced anywhere. The bodies are country specific.

However Digital Rev will pay (whilst under warranty) to send your body back to HK and they do it in less than 2 days. So turnaround times would not be much greater than normal UK.

The only issue may be that, supposing you managed to get the body into the country the first time with reduced or zero tax (without a rebate from DR) and sent it back for warranty work, you may well find you have to stump up for the original duty due on the camera's return to the UK and it would be interesting to know if DR would pay the duty on a 6-month old warranty return......

I got my D700 and a couple of lenses from Clifton Cameras earlier this year and was pleased with their service each time.

At the time I bought the body Digital Depot was out of stock so Stuart couldn't help, but they do get great reviews here.
