Possibly the heat has brought on a bit of GAS but has anyone moved from a Canon R7 to an R6iii and could share their findings please.
I'm aware that I'll lose the "reach" of my R7 but I do find the autofocus a little jumpy on the R7 for bird photography and wondered if the R6iii is noticeably better in that count. Similarly I understand the pre capture is a much better implementation but would appreciate any feedback on any rolling shutter issues with small birds wings.

You could get it for an extended period for £nil over the next bank holiday. Perhaps these dates are no good for you.

For those of you with an R5mk2 what cards are you using?...as in minimum specs just for photos and no video.

I plan on getting two 128gb CFexpress but don't want to buy anything that will be overkill for my needs.

Any advice would be appreciated on the cards, cheers guys.

For those of you with an R5mk2 what cards are you using?...as in minimum specs just for photos and no video.

I plan on getting two 128gb CFexpress but don't want to buy anything that will be overkill for my needs.

Thanks Kev...just trying to get everything in place before buying the R5MK2...it's going to be a steep learning curve coming from a 1D3 and 7D and don't want the cards to cause any unnecessary problems whilst I'm pulling my hair out.

How did you find the switch to mirrorless?

If you are lucky they may call you and say "can we deliver on Thursday" so you'll get a bit more time, and if you hire over a BH (Easter is a good one) you'll get the extra days for free

I'm a few months into a new R6mk3 from a R7 - you can see the lenses I've been using in my bio.

Initial impressions - very favourable - I don't see my R7 (nor my 5dmk4!!) is going to get to much use going forward. I haven't done a direct back to back comparison but I think cropping the R6 is going to be preferable to using the R7

The tracking is better than the R7 - much more sticky - especially with the shorter wider aperture lenses.

The 40fps electronic shutter is madness - cRAW is your friend here.

Pre Shooting is useable (unlike the R7) and you can programme turning it on to almost any button you like.

ONLY gripe at the moment is that in electronic shutter mode the FPS are 40/20/5 - 20 is a bit too fast for anything other than wildlife and 5 is not quite fast enough when 20 is too fast. Even my old 1Dmk4 allows me to select the FPS in continuous shooting. Surely it's only a software thing ?

Last point - in a whisper - for the first time ever as long supporter of UK bricks and mortar shops this R6mk3 came from Hong Kong via a well know retailer beginning with P, but I could not overlook the saving being recently retired - with more time to take photos

That's very helpful thanks. I've got the rental booked now for the bank holiday to give it a go. I have been looking at the grey market and the savings are quite substantial

I'm 75% decided but the test weekend will make the final decision.The only slight niggle is nobody appears to offer an L bracket for the R6iii that allows unencumbered screen movement; I'm not sold on those with a slot to feed the screen into but managed to get a Falcam / Ulanzi that works for my R7 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008016773409.html

What it needs from the manufacturers is to project the upright arm forward slightly - although whether this causes structural issues I don't know ? I'm surmising the redesign and R&D costs probably don't make it viable to change from the standard existing styles

I rarely use one but a Google search suggests 3 Legged Thing, Sunwayfoto or ProMediaGear may have a solution for you.

Of these it looks like only the ProMediaGear fits my requirements (although a little pricey) - the other two have the cut out slot where you need to feed the screen through, which I find too fiddly.

As an aside how to you get on with the R7? I have one but it is not my favourite mainly due to noisy images a bit like I found the EOS 7 compared with the EOS 7ii. It is probably the the conditions under which use it. I much prefer my R6.

I’d considered an R7 as a way to go lighter on my kit.
But after using 6d’s and R6’s for years, the noise made it impractical.

I will say, I used the original 7d for weddings for years and could produce acceptable images. But after the 6’s I just couldn’t go back to that level of noise.

I still like the R7. I do find it a bit noisy but software improvements have countered that in recent times. It took me a while to realise I needed to ensure my technique was good - either using a tripod or upping the shutter speed to get crisp images. I believe the pixel density is equivalent to about 80MP on FF

The autofocus is much better than my 7Dii but it does have a tendency to jump off smaller subjects such as birds. Having said that when it finds focus the images are pretty good. You can see "wobble" in image bursts but it's only noticeable when scrolling through all the pictures and not in a single image

It does suffer with rolling shutter on small birds and pre capture is not very well implemented at all. The mechanical shutter is also very loud and has a clunky feel

Overall I'm happy with the purchase and would rate it a 7/10
