Yes
I am buying my first DSLR in early December and was set to get a D300s....but now i have been looking at the Canon 7d ?
so which one do i go for both are great cameras, also looking to get a decent lens with the camera ..looking at bout £1,500 for the combo.

so which one do i go for folks ?

You go to a shop... ask the assistant to get both camera and lens combo's your thinking of getting, out and then try them in the shop.

The one that feels "right" to you is the one you get.

Fondle cameras and see which you prefer. People here will generally recommend their favourite brand. So get fondling.

Prepare for a thread full of Nikon owners telling you to buy the D300s and Canon owners insisting the 7D is the one to buy... ;)

Go to a camera shop and try both - buy the one that feels "right" when you hold it.

Again as above. My first camera was a Nikon d50., I chose it soley because it felt better in my hand than the Canon equivilent at the time in my other hand.

A recent foray into Canon gear has made me realise one thing... I cant get on with it. Hence me selling up again to go back to Nikon.

Both cameras you listed are solid performers, the only difference being the video on the 7d is slightly better, everything else is pretty much on par.

One other thing that no-one seems to mention... The cost of the glass that you will want to chuck on the front of it....

Great advice in the thread already; go and try them out in your hands and see which feels best to you. I used Canon for many years but switched to Nikon about five years ago - they're both great systems and only you can decide which is best for you

hey thanks for the advice i forgot to mention i have used a Nikon F80 for years ! but handled a Canon 7D last week and it seems a good camera ... and of course the new Nikon D7000 is out next month !!

thanks everyone

wait for the D7000.

Then try that alongside a 7D.

what is the lens going to be for?

Just for general walkabout stuff, I'd have a second hand 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.

Popcorn at the ready...

:D

Wow, everyone is being so mature and non-brandist tonight, it's lovely to see.

Also. NIKON FTW! :D

No seriously, the advice is all spot on :) But Trig's, I have to say, on glass costs it seems to be pricey vs pricey :D

I did read somewhere on these threads that Canon glass is slighly cheaper than the Nikon equivalent (both high end) - Not bein Canon user I wouldn't know.... But I feel that what your gonna stick on the front of it should be taken into consideration thou as that is the "investment" as I had drummed into my head

wait for the nikon D7000 you won't want the d300 if the reports from usa users are true.

I use a D300s gripped with a 16-85VR lens I'm happy with it to say the least but it will be personal preference see which one feels more comfortable in your hands before deciding.

One day someone will see the gap in the market and make cameras called Nakon for those that can't decide between the two :p

all very sensible.....so far !! i am going to have a look at the D7000 as well, it has some good reviews so far.. about the same price as a D300s tho....

Glass price is an issue. Canon glass is generally cheaper with more choice.

You don't have to "wait" until next month. The Nikon D7000 is already here!

Yes, but not HERE yet :nono:

I have noticed the price of nikon glass seems to be slightly higher than the canon equivalent, there also seems to be some gaps too - such as a nikon equivalent of the best canon lens for a crop - 17-55 2.8 IS USM

and nikon has no 70-200 f/4's, an excellent budget L from canon.

But nikon has a good 18-200 (I think better than canon's), and offers a 200-400 f/4  and the 14-24mm, and you can use older nikkors (whereas canon's FD lenses don't fit onto EOS bodies (that said, you can pick up older EF lenses on ebay quite cheap, which a lot of people seem to forget (the EF 70-210mm f/4 being a good example))). Canon makes a couple of crap lenses though. The 75-300 is one to avoid (I don't know why they make it, they should just stop selling it in favour of the lovely little 55-250mm), as well as the old 18-55mm II.

So it kinda evens out. If you're particularly interested in one of the lenses that has no equivalent from the other brand, that's quite an important thing to factor in. I'm interested in the MPE-65mm from canon, so canon was my natural choice (it also happened that I like canon's ergonomic better) for me.

Personal preference, though as others have mentioned subsequent cost of more lenses down the line need to considered. Either would probably do you well, though I can recommend the 7D as it's an awesome camera.

Ditto the advice to have a 'feel' of the cameras. After reading for hours on the net about Canon & Nikon, then deciding on the Canon model I was prepared to buy, I walked into a camera shop and had a play with both - I walked out and not long after I bought a Nikon :-)

That would be the Nikon 17-55 2.8 then
