I have been working as a volunteer for the Society at the Bristol studio as it was close to home, a great bunch, very rewarding and I could put the time in. However, just last week, rather appallingly, the DPS 'board' called time on the studio with no real rhyme nor reason and took all of the lighting kit and dumped it in a garage somewhere.

It is clear that the so called 'board' had or in the least have no intention of pushing the DPS forward as they have literally obliterated the Bristol studio and its members of which many, many people have been left heartbroken by the decision.

It makes no sense and as a pilot, the studio was working and would have led to brilliant things for the society.

So, in conclusion, I would say that the DPS when run correctly is a fantastic outlet. However, the board are abject fools who have undone years of hard work.

Cheers,

Pete.

That's not entirely true is it Pete. It seems they didn't shut it down 'no real rhyme nor reason'.

I refer everyone to the statement on the DPS website about this subject, where they have explained their reason :
http://www.disabledphotographers.co.uk/agmweekend.html

Whether you agree with those reasons is an entirely different matter.
Please bear in mind when making comments that you are only putting one side of the story down and also bear in mind that TP may be liable for those comments. Therefore please only make statements if they are absolutely based on fact.

It's also known to us that you two know each other and have history with the DPS over this subject. So please be mindful of 'tag-teaming' in threads over this. You must understand we have to protect ourselves from libel cases and will therefore moderate as necessary.

I'm not stating who is right and who is wrong, merely stating our position.

I have read that thing on their website, still sounds incredibly mean!

I understand that if its taking A LOT out of the budget then cost-cuts must occur, but closing it down compleatly and leaving nothing for those left behind is just unfair! -And they were worried that they would be run by Bristolians

set up your own group in Bristol Diego Garcia! It sounds as if it would be greatly appreciated!

First up I have no idea who the OP is and that is a fact. Literally no idea. The DPS have lots of members of which I have spent time with a some total of what? perhaps just 15.

Secondly, please do not believe what was written upon the DPS website what so ever. Biggest crock **** ever.

Thirdly, if your moderation needs reminding then a PM would have sufficed without an assumption post suggesting 'tag teaming'.

Pretty upset that you actually suggest I think that or indeed trigggered it. I reiterate, I do not know who the OP is and was simply putting across a candid retort to how I see things as I have had facts placed before me. Delete the thread if you need to.

Thanks.

Thanks - one hopes that something will come from it, but where to start. The location was ideal for wheelchair access etc.

As for Bristolian's and organisation, look at what a marvellous job Gary Johnson has done as Bristol City (hang on, he is a Londoner....?!?!':D

Hi everybody i have just joined and have been following the threads here and on the d.p.s. also on the other site please could anybody seperate the differant truths and put it all in plain English what is going on :cuckoo:

hi there - thats the thing. I dont think anyone knows, least me, but what I have seen is all rather odd and a real shame how it all ended locally. :(

as a member of the dps as a volunteer, I acknowledge that the aims of the society is fantastic, to help people with disabilities to enjoy photography, on a recent visit to Bristol I went to the studio, it was well equiped and the people there more than friendly, I was told that the studio had nearly become self supporting because of equipment that had been donated and sold at camera fairs and at the Focus exhibition. I think it awful that the main members of the committee have decided to close it, as it was a starting point, studios could have been open all over various points of the UK, The financial status of the society is healthy enough now to do so. I was also privy to some information and know that the resignation of the chairman was forced on her by the said committee it was like a witch hunt, she has done nothing but good for the society and raised a lot of money for it by her costant hard work. The committee should be ashamed of itself, they have caused a lot of unrest with the members and not all of them know the truth.

If you feel something untoward has happened then you, the members, have the right to call for an extraordinary general meeting.

The Charity Commission said:
Members can ask the charity trustees to call an EGM if they feel that the charity trustees are not fulfilling the charity's aims and objectives, or where they feel the charity is not being administered effectively. The members can use an EGM to seek explanations from the charity trustees for a course of action, or encourage fuller discussion on an issue. If the request is properly made, the charity trustees cannot refuse (if they do, the members can usually call the meeting themselves).

morning all Keith we have asked the d.p.s. for a e.g.m. but have refused. The charity commission are toothless and do not wont to know just fobbing us off with a differant excuse everytime, as there lettere contrdict what the previous letter from a differant person said.:cuckoo:

If you have done everything correctly and the DPS have refused your request for a EGM then follow the proper procedure and call one your selves as is your right to do so.

The Charity Commission is far from being toothless, if you follow the correct procedure then they have an obligation to act.

Marcel Hi

I am rather concerned by your comments about tag teaming if you have evidence that we know each other then you almost certainly have broken the data protection act as the two groups must have shared information that is provicded as confidential information. I will be looking at the complains proceedure of both societys/groups and formally complaining.

Pete is correct in his statement that he does not know who I am I do not post here using a name that he would recognise, I have had no conversqation with him about the thread, I have no knowledge of DPS members who also belong to this site my post was open and asked for comments, I want to know what others who may have experience of this society think about it.

Ok lets be very open here, I was suprised that Pete posted the next message on here, I had not expected that to happen, he was not encouraged to do so but did it openly and in ressponse to my posting as have others who have responded to this thread. From the comments Pete makes I can identify him but he does not know who I am, if you have made a link between us then I think you should tell people what that link is.

Chris

i dont think marcel is implying that densley or pete are tag teaming or in cahoots. i read the comment as more of a putting facts out there and covering this site against any action. i think he is also making you aware that you should be careful not to appear to be tagteaming, rather than you are tagteaming...

after reading the link marcel put up, they trustees do seem to jump the gun a bit so covering TPs back is probably very wise.

as for closing the studio because of people voting in trustees from bristol, all sounds a bit stupid to me. i assume there is a membership fee, and they had a boost of people signing up to use the studio, so making more money. put the spare money towards the studio and theoretically funds itself:shrug:

sounds like people are afraid they will lose control

As an outsider I could see why the DPS would be concerned about channelling £4000 per yer into the bristol studio if it would not benifit all of its members. Would those in bristol be happy that £4000 a year was being put into a studio in durham (random place chosen for example!) that they'd never get to use?
Times are tough for charities to stay alive, with the climate and all. Cost cutting is bound to happen. Have the bristol branch proved that they can/are self supporting?

Without knowing the ins and outs of the behind the scenes politics, all I can say is, that the Charity Commission are normally very hot on the running of things and will make sure that things run corrrectly. I have first hand experience of this from problems that have arisen in scouting that I have been involved with this. Follow corect procedures and you will see results. They may not be results you like but the Charity Commision is likely to remain impartial and sort things out.

Densly and Diego, Marcel isn't the kind of mod to throw around accusations and state things without being certain. Maybe a few emails beween you lot will straighten things out. Let's not be hasty and start throwing weight around with complaints and accusations of breaking data protection.
I simply read Marcels post as one that made TP and the Mod/admins stance on the situation to avert any potential libel cases coming up.

I wish you all the best with the DPS and hope things get resolved fast for you so the DPS can get back to the great work it does.

Rob

Marcel Hi
<snip>....you almost certainly have broken the data protection act as the two groups must have shared information

Have we now? And who have we shared that information with? And exactly what information have we shared? Get your facts right before you accuse us.

if you have made a link between us then I think you should tell people what that link is.

Chris
*ahem*

Make your mind up, do you want us to tell him who you are or not.

FWIW I didn't say you were tag teaming, I said be mindful of doing it.
Yes, I know your full name, and yes we know that the two of you know each other, and yes, we know that both of you have a beef with the DPS over this issue.

I'm in no tolerant mood to be playing the softly softly mediator here, so Im telling you all how it is.

And it all becomes apparent. I now know who the OP is but did not before. It appears then that the DPS have given you (TP) a heads up on this. The funny thing is that I could have posted what happed a good ten days ago but did not.....

For the record I have met Chris only twice in six months!!!

All noted and this is me out of the conversation sadly as I was passionate about the DPS, but not wanting to get into stupid issues on here.

as a bystander I am a little surprised that this has generated so much heat so quickly

if there issues to debate it ought to be able to continue

if there are issues of libel - they also need to be addressed
but as I recall libel does not apply if the truth is being told

I, for one, would like to see this resolved, but withing the constraints of healthy debate

for clarity, I don't know Marcel, Pete or Chris other than through this forum
and I have no axe to grind for or against DPS

Yeah which is why I need to get out of it. I was at the DPS last weekend and saw elderly wheelchair bound people crying their eyes out due to this. In fact, everyone was gutted. This is not about abled or disabled either, simply just people.

It was an amazing outlet for ALL (abled and disabled) and I too am gutted as it gave me so much to focus on and help people less abled than me. I cant convey how upset I am without the emotion so best I dont.

Marcel, I apologise for the libel thing, my intention was not to upset.

Thanks :)

BTW, Yup, we did have a complaint from someone at the DPS.

Ok let me get this right

The DPS complain that somebody has asked a question in general about them feeling that they are being misrepresented.

They give information about mebership of their society including information that identifies two members, that must include either names, address or email information as my screen name is not a name the DPS would directly recognise any way it is sufficient to make a link between two people

TP discoses possibly uses their membership information to make that link and then post information suggesting people belong to a group using information that group should not have shared.

I wonder where that is going, to me somewhere somebody has broken their rules about keeping information safe and using it for the correct purpose.

Thanks :)

BTW, Yup, we did have a complaint from someone at the DPS.

Let us get another thing very clear, as the perosn who started this thread I have not in any way led people into a conversation my only posts on the subject I raised were to seek views. I am greateful to those who have posted I am amazed it has raised soe many eyebrows.

This has to be the end of this thread. A complaint will be sent to the DPS their action is wholly unacceptable and I have already raised the issue of confidentiality with TP.

Chris

So your allowed to complain and raise questions.. but there not..... kewl :)

They made no mention of membership whatsoever, so that ball can be put back in the bag right away.
As for how they recognised you, you'll have to ask them how they did that.

As for you leading people. I didn't say you had, I was merely pointing something out.

You know what? The amount of times we stick up for people behind the scenes regarding the things they say and their behaviour, and what do we get in return? Moaned at and threatened back from the very people we're standing up for.

I know, lets change the style of moderation. Any threads from now on that don't tell the story 100% from an unbiased viewpoint will be deleted.

Lets see how many people moan then.

Marcia Hi

Something I dislike greatly here, I asked a very basic question at the start of this thread hoping to receive comments from past and present members of the society, I put no slant on that question anyone was welcome to make positive or negative comments. This thread appears to have developed into full scale war! I have concerns that data has been shared that has identified members of this group and the DPS, that is an issue to be discussed outside of this forum and not in public.

As a moderator of other groups I do feel for you, flack always seems to come your way but a simple statement saying "if contributors here know each other please be aware of" would have been sufficient, NO other member of this group could positively identify me from the information available to them through this forum.

Ironically, the thread has been helpful as the DPS stops all attempts to discuss the issue on its forum, apparently "that is unconstitutional as the society communicates with its members through it quarterly magazine" the written words of a seniior member of the management committee of the DPS. You can access my thread on their website

http://z8.invisionfree.com/UK_DPS/index.php?s= Ma&showforum=9 its the one from ChrisTaylor, sorry I cannot give a more accurate thread but that resulted in my membership of the forumbeing suspended until April next year!

IF this thread is to continue then I insist on the following.

Explain at the outset your connection with the DPS.
Stop attacking the moderator
Respect ohters and their views.
Refer to my original post and anseer the question asked there.

May I make one final comment about the moderator, considering my banning from the DPS forum for what I hope is a fairly placid post thank you for letting this thread run for so long even when it has become rather over heated!!!

I guess anyone can identify you know then......

densley re your message as i have been banned what did it say if you are going to have a open descusion then all must be able to see

First Marcel an apology on spelling your name wrong, that was honestly a mistake I simply misread it.

RVHarry the posting reads.

As some of you will have noted from my offerings in other forums, I have recently joined the society falling quite a gap from serious photography and that one of my photographic interest’s centers on studio work. To this end access to a well equipped and accessible studio has greatly increased my access to areas of photography previously largely inaccessible to me. The opportunity to meet with other disabled photographers has been of great benefit, and, the meeting of those new to the hobby, seeing them develop their interest has rekindled my interest in photography.

Having arrived at the DPS Studio at the Vassals Centre today to be greeted with the news that it is to be closed and dismantled, as a new member, leaves me wondering why this should be and how the decision to undertake what appears to be the ending of one of the Societies greatest assets in terms of making studio photography available to a group of people for whom studios are largely inaccessibly, I begin to question how serious the Society is about making photography accessible and in turn begin to question whether it is truly committed to its aim of enabling disabled photographers.

I believe members are entitled to an explanation as to why this has happened and the rationale behind it and I look forward to receive a reply within this forum upon this topic.

Sorry this may appear twice as the first posting does not seem to have worked properly

Marcel and apology for getting your name wrong, that was me misreading your name.

RV Harry

Here is my post from the DPS website.

Marcel, I apologise for the libel thing, my intention was not to upset.

I have to say that I am nothing to do with the DPS but it sounds like a very worthwhile organization thats doing some good.
I know that we are in the middle of a credit crunch but leaving people high and dry and distraught is awful, for some people having something like photography gives them a passion, something to do, sadly from what I've read it does indeed seem to be not the best run organization in the world (bit like our banks!) but it does seem sad that people are being affected by it.

Maybe its time there was another organization for the whole country, not just where it seems to be convenient.

If the DPS wishes to stifle discussion of this then they're doing a poor job of oppressing it, considering nothing has been removed or edited from this thread ;)

While we take our responsibilities very seriously, we don't respond well to threats about threads....from external organisations or even from members within. And we certainly don't wither and go pale at the first mention of libel or the DPA as people have expected in the past.
So in that light, yes, we were contacted by the DPS with a complaint about a post.

The very fact the thread is still here should be speaking volumes in itself about our position with regards to being allowed to discuss this.

We haven't given any private data out, nor broken the DPA. The only time personal data has been put on this thread is by Chris himself. (His name)

I merely reminded everyone of our obligations with regard to libellous comments (which was aimed at everyone but in response to Pete's comment), and reminded everyone to be mindful of 'tagteaming' and how this might come across (which was aimed at both).

As for getting my name wrong, dont worry, I've been called far worse.

I have concerns that data has been shared that has identified members of this group and the DPS

Oh please. You post on the DPS forum under the name of "ChrisTaylor". You post here and signed your first post "Chris."

You've posted photos that look like they were taken in a studio... Perhaps whoever arranged the models/studio would remember who was there called Chris. You've posted photos from the Jewish Museum in Berlin, perhaps you told people you were going to Berlin. You've posted you have an issue with colour vision.

How thick do you think people are? Anybody who has met you in real life or who knows you through the DPS will have no problem identifying you.

Chris,
Clearly there have been some happenings behind the scenes at the studio that have resulted in the users suffering as a result. Not knowing what the happenings are must be difficult for you all. The post on the DPS website says tat the AGM has been postponed, so hopefully you'll get some answers and the AGM does have to take place still.

All the best pal,

Rob

For the sake clarity I shall make the position of the DPS clear to everybody.

As trustees of a charity we have a legal duty of prudence to see that the funds of the charity are spent only in furtherance of the charity objects, as stated in our constitution. That is enshrined in charity law.

http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/publications/cc3.asp#g

We cannot therefore legally spend donated money on whatever we like, just because it is loosely related to the purpose of the charity. It has to be specified in our constitution.

Running a studio is not a part of our constitution. The charity was set up to provide adapted camera equipment to disabled photographers to help them, not to run a studio, however worthwhile an idea that may be.

When this studio was first suggested the trustees were assured external fundraising would fund it and there was no intention whatsoever of using the society funds in any way. This was reiterated in several emails prior to the lease being signed. This was legal, as it did not involve our society funds.

For whatever reason that funding never materialised and we were not shown any prospect of it ever doing so, by those who were supposed to be raising it.

In the meantime the society was forced to pay the costs of running the studio from its funds or risk legal action for non-payment. So we were caught between a rock and a hard place.

As a small charity we could not continue to fund the studio, without additional external funds being made available, even if it were legal to do so. We would very soon have bankrupted the society. Then the studio would have had to close anyway!

Several of the aggrieved parties have sighted the raising of funds through the sale of surplus equipment as a source of fundraising, but that is a normal part of our fund raising activity and as such we could not legally use the funds raised for an un-constitutional purpose.

If anybody should wish to set up a charity with the express object of running a studio for disabled photographers then we would wish them luck, sadly we cannot help to fund it.

This has been explained before and I have no intention of entering into a further pointless debate, as our hands are legally tied.

Tom Molloy
Acting Chairman of the Disabled Photographers' Society

You have missed some key facts here. The fact that you have stopped the local people using the venue despite its membership fees being paid and being booked until the end of July 2009.

The fact that you have declined refunds on membership fees.

The fact that the studio was making money for the DPS - you have seen the figures.

Blanket banning people on the DPS forum to protect yourselves and the facts of which still remain unsolved and not right.

You have excluded the fact that you referred to harmless people as ''the Bristol mafia.'

Oh and of course, fake policemen.
