Do you have a carry-around camera?

Hi everyone,

I suppose you all have some kind of camera that is portable for when you are on the go. I wanted to share my experiences and you can share yours.

First I had a Sony A5000 and it was a good idea except it becomes quite big when you stick a zoom lens (that isn't the kit) on it. Even with the kit lens it is not exactly that compact. APSC sensor though.
Then I tried a Sony A6000 which would also serve as my main camera but I thought better of walking around with a relatively expensive camera and again the size with the lens. (I think there is a pancake prime lens available for this system but might be Zeiss and therefore expensive)

Then I tried film SLRs. Nice idea and they are cheap but all the ones I used were still heavy and cumbersome and honestly, digital is more suitable for me as carry-around. Film is a little more specialised nd a hassle in other ways, as much as I love it.

Now I have an Olympus XZ-2 and it is perfect size and weight and good ergonomics. A joy to use. I got it secondhand very cheaply. 1.8-2.5, 1.7 inch not bad sensor size, shoots raw and so on. The only problem is that for sure it is better than my Motorola phone cam but it is noticeably not as good as the Sonys or a DSLR with a prime lens. Obviously!

I am not obsessed with sharpness and IQ in general as my posts here testify but to not spend too much you must compromise on IQ often for the small size. Maybe someone here is using another system like Fujifilm or Olympus mirrorless that is small, light and also has small and affordable interchangeable lenses. Baring that, I am curious what your carry-around camera is and what you require of it.

Thanks

Most of my friends for a true carry around use a rx100 I can't fault the image quality and my wife is buying me a mk iii for Xmas

It's either the 1dx or the iPhone 6 for me - both take great photos in the right circumstances

I have a Sony nex6 I leave in the car - not exactly small but I don't care if it gets knocked around too much.

My iphone but often forget it has a camera on it
Have A canon m with 22mm f 2.0 that fits nicely in my pocket as does my Samsung ST550 :)
It certainly lighter and more pocketable than my Nikon Fuji or Canon Slrs.

Whenever I have enough money for a small carry-around camera an extra lens for the DSLR seems a much more exciting buy. So I just keep on carrying the big one. When I'm trying to be really portable I'll take it with just one lens, the carry-around 18-250mm.

I have a Lumix TZ70, fits in jacket pocket, shoots RAW and can give you full manual control, not as good IQ as my D7100, but a lot smaller and lighter.:)

I use a fuji XF1 as my pocket camera. Good size and reasonable image quality. Just hope it lasts without the lens error issue they can suffer from.

I've just been discussing this on another thread as I've been giving serious contemplation to getting a camera to have with my all the time as the iPhone just doesn't cut it ;) I bought the Olly EM10 for this purpose to complement my D750, but found even with pancake lens it was a bit big to fit in anything but a big coat pocket, and have since upgraded to the EM5-II with 12-40mm f2.8 so it's now far too bulky ;)

The obvious ones are the RX100 and G7x for me. I find the price of the RX100-III a bit hard to swallow, even with the double cash back available until 6-12-15, and for me the G7x is a better option than the RX100-II as it is f2.8 at the tele end compared with f4.9 of the RX100-II, plus it's wider at 24mm vs 28mm. But then I wonder if these are too small/fiddly for my shovel hands and have then been looking at the G5x, but then we're talking not pocket friendly and high price again. My head spins :hungover:;)

Yes always got my iPhone 6 with me.. even though its not as good quality as say an RX100 the pictures always have a certain charm about them (y)

I have a EOS M that goes everywhere with me, even when I'm using the DSLR the EOS I still have the EOS M with me.

Panasonic DMC-TZ8 is my "go everywhere" pocket camera. Has full Auto, P, S, A & M modes and 12x optical zoom.

rx100 for me too. Before that I had an xf1

My iphone5s
The many thousands of photo's stored on my pc have been taken with my 5s (and before that my 4) and for what i've needed it's been brilliant
As i want to expand my hobby ive just bought a canon eos1200d and am now (im)patiently waiting for the rain to stop !

Canon Powershot A720is, its got 8mp,stabilised, takes two AA batteries and has a viewfinder of sorts.
Had it for about eight years, lives in my rucksack and is there should the need or want arise, great little lightweight camera

Sometimes replaced by a Fuji X-E1 and XC 16-50mm lens if the photography is to be taken a bit more seriously on a day out or suchlike

iPhone 6s for me, set to record 4K too, if I know I'll be taking pictures definitely I just take my camera bag

If i have my jacket on or any form of bag i take the A7R +35. Anything else i usually take the RX100.

iPhone 6s lives with me everywhere I go.

Don't usually use it as a serious camera, but is great to check out locations or shots I may return to later with the Nikon.

XF1 is my pocket camera when I don't want to carry the D7000. Mine did suffer from the lens control error but was repaired under warranty.

Yes it's pocket sized but only if you are a very large marsupial. :)

it's actually not dissimilar in size to a Canon Powershot G12, a little taller, slightly slimmer, and slightly lighter... and, It happily fits in either my Fleece Jacket Pocket, or in the leg-pocket on a pair of Craghoppers Kiwi Trousers or similar... it's actually one of the smaller 120-Folders.

RX100 Mk3 for me...Awesome! I also have the LX100 but that will be up for sale soon as it's not as good as the RX.

I use a fuji XF1 as my pocket camera. Good size and reasonable image quality. Just hope it lasts without the lens error issue they can suffer from.

rx100 for me too. Before that I had an xf1

Another XF1 user here - I actually have 2 of them and neither (so far!) has suffered the notorious problem. If/when they do die, I'll be looking out for whatever's similar in size and IQ to the XF or RX100. Not sure there are any ICL systems small enough to be properly pocketable in a shirt or normal trouser pocket, especially with a zoom attached.

i have a little fuji XP70 i stick n the glove box it's waterproof to a degree, dust proof and quite hardy but to be honest iv'e never used it for anything purposeful yet
it's a just in case camera :)

I never leave home without my Canon G1X MkII it's a little on the bulky side for a true compact but it takes filters and has a great 1 & 1/2 " sensor which takes great photos.

The camera on the iPhone 6S is really rather good so I often use that, otherwise my kit is m4/3 so hardly heavy.

I always used to carry a Fuji XP10 with me until it died a few months back. Dustproof, waterproof and shockproof. There was no lens to extend either. It went everywhere with me.

Useless as a camera but really handy for taking pictures as a record of work done or as a memory jogger where quality wasn't important.

If I want to take something I think will be better than my phone but not large enough to need its own case I take my Panasonic LF1. It really is pocketable and the only real problem with it is it's too easy to turn on.
