Don't lose your composure over composition...

I didn't find the personal attacks funny, neither do I find the contact through my website particularly humerous. For me it took too long for the mods to act, but I'll look back through the thread, learn and consider what I post in the future.

I can assure you that if you had made it clear via PM that he'd been making postings outwith of this forum in a harassing manner, then things would have escalated much earlier.

I think you may have a point. I started off thinking it was really funny but as the insults on both sides became more personal I thought it should has been stopped. Maybe it belonged in OOF rather than the main forum. That way new members/browsers wouldn't be faced with that straightaway.
You're right in saying Gortch was the winner though. Can't believe people allowed him to wind them up so much :) He was a puppet master.

i think you are mistaken if you think anyone thought he was serious - most of the people replying to him were wetting their strides at his pathetic cobblers, he wasn't so much a puppet master as a bear on a chain being poked with sharp sticks.

and while you might be correct about the way he wa responded to not looking too clever to the uninitiated it was being actively encouraged by a couple of mods, so clearly there wasnt a massive concern

Thanks tintin for the offer I'm not sure how to un ignore tho so had better not try it :)

I didn't find the personal attacks funny, .

to be honest his personal attacks were relatively ammusing , but the humour came from them being so obviously crap - as i said is an elephant worried about the opinion an ameoba has of it ?

harrasment off site is less ammusing - although I didnt get too excited about the emails i recieved - I just replied telling him to get f***ed and then added his email address to my spam folder.

Thanks tintin for the offer I'm not sure how to un ignore tho so had better not try it :)

If you click on a users avatar you get a fly out with a profile synopsis and a number of options one of which is ignore - if you click on that you ignore the person. If they are already on your ignore list the option is unignore and you click on it again to remove them from the list... simples

We play a balancing act all the time, as as most people seemed to be having fun,
the banter was running both ways, we let it run its course.
After all It was only the members that were fueling the discussion.
If everyone ignored him, then he would have had nothing to say or do.

Did I not say that 2 posts above? lol

Just trying to add to my pointless posts Cobra....

Thanks Chris :)
Oh yes someone said something actually someone I like on here but went too far
Never mind:)

its in out of focus

I'm watching you my lad :p

I was being ironic Pete, that was in reference to the ignore button.
And you posting :D
Actually staff can't "ignore" or be "ignored" (Hard luck :D)

However I'm sorry that someone overstepped the mark, and you felt the need to ignore them.

Actually staff can't... be "ignored" (Hard luck :D)
.

They can... you just have to use your brain instead of you mouse ;)

We are damned if we do, damned if we don't.
Do we all jump in the minute a new member puts a toe to wrong side of the line?

Guys this isn't a criticism It's your playground and you put your time and effort (and money/jaffa cakes etc) into providing a really useful resource and we are grateful for it. As such we the members accept your decisions. As said I need to consider what I post at times as I was one defending myself, which ultimately prolonged it. I should have just walked away. Lesson learned :)

I found the email this morning. All contact via my websites are logged and the incident was reported to the senders ISP. I'm a big boy, know which big stick to use ;)

This is the best photography forum around. I wouldn't have it any other way.

And just 'cos you don't hear it enough - Thank you

Pretty much that in a nut shell.

However had we been told about any "abuse" PM's etc.
It is most likely he would have been castrated earlier.
We take a dim view of that sort of thing.
So guys don't feel as though you are telling tales out of school,
if we don't know, we can't act (y)

(y) I wish i'd thought of that instead of just telling him to go forth and multiply - i was tempted to sign his email address up for some viagra / porn catalogues/ internet dating - but i figured that might just be doing him a favour ;)

We all (Staff) were convinced it was a wind up, and just let it run for the fun factor.
However, with some of the comments being posted, in hind sight he may have been serious, well, that is in "his little world" anyway.
And besides that, he must be a really sad person if he feels the need to harass people off the forum.

Thank you, it is appreciated (y)

that's the interwebz for you - I've had it i think three times from TP (four if you count the young 'lady' who decided to bombard me with semi naked shots and graphic sexual invitations - which on your work email isn't as much fun as it sounds ), and 5 more times from other forums , mostly just random abuse but also including a threat of a law suit, a bloke who "knows some police and they'll arrest you for taking a picture of my car and showing its number plate on the web ", and a bloke who was going to "hunt me down and show me who's really hard " (strangely i'm still waiting for all three of those to happen)

There are some really sad people out there thats for sure!

David Bailey

who's he? ....

I never thought anyone was taking him seriously I just can't believe he was given that much air time :) The way he was deliberately misquoting people, ignoring others and generally just winding everyone up was genius. However, if he was making threats etc off the forum that's another matter.
I didn't say there was great cause for concern but that I would have stopped it, for the reasons already stated and also that you could plainly see it was going round in circles.
Like I say, if it was in OOF then newbies probably wouldn't have seen it or would have seen it for what it was which was a funny thread that maybe went on a bit too long :)

Of course Gortch was a clear winner. He got the visibility and air time that he needed. Played into his hands hook line and sinker. It can be dressed up that Gortch was strung along for humour or whatever, but at the end of the day, he got what he craved, visibility. The best way to deal with internet bullies and trolls is the tried and tested method. Ignore them. They go away. This charade was not fun but a pretty dull exchange. I am afraid it was not fun and far from dignified.

Yes, he got visibility because we allowed him to. The more visibility he got, the more stupid he made himself look, which in turn amused us more, which meant we were happy to give him more visibility etc etc etc

Yes, he got the visibility because you allowed him. Exactly my point.

Anyway, it's not a problem. I am certainly no Gortch fan and will respect your opinion. I have to be honest though and say that I think both sides came across as silly and a childish. It was not a pretty read and it was certainly not amusing. Anyway. Onward. :)

Exactly - if the mods had thought he was winning at the forums expense they'd have banned him a lot sooner - two days making himself look like a tool and having the p*** taken out of him, then being banned, can't really be defined as an outstanding victory.

As to whether it was childish or amusing , I guess different people have different senses of humour .

I think my point is missed. Never mind. :)

No I understand your point - in most cases just ignore a troll and it wanders off (or gets banned) , however sometimes tormenting a troll can be funny - to some people (some forums make a positive sport of this - barryboys being a classic example). I'm fairly sure the TP admins wouldn't encourage troll torturing on a regular basis , but gortch was an exception to that rule.

I think you definitely have a point Kev. I agree it was silly and childish.

But I quite like being silly and childish at times.

The one thing that bothers me is the discovery that he was hassling people off-site.

I wish that had been reported so he could be closed down instantly. It's put a different dynamic on the whole thing.

Got it in one, we all like a little amusement at times, we are only human :)p) after all

Absolutely! we would have castrated him a lot sooner had we known!

To be fair byker only discovered his this morning, and I took mine as an extension of the same thing - if he's really tragic enough to dig up my email address (which he seemed to think was real detective work - its the same as my username so no, not really Sherlock ) and then waste his time sending me pathetic drivel by email , then that's really his problem not mine - its not hassle if I'm not hassled. Once I'd invited him to perform an potentially illegal and biologically impossible act , and speculated that he enjoys coitus with whelks, I just put his email on block .

I knew someone would say something like that,
TBH my money was on Pete, but hey ho :p

OMG  delete that comment quick, Don't you dare insult me by comparing me with the mouse :(

Does NO ONE understand rhetorical these days? :(
:p
