Rochdale 2 - 3 FC United of Manchester

Norton scored the winner after robbing Dale keeper Josh Lillis

A dramatic last-gasp goal by Michael Norton put FC United of Manchester into the second round of the FA Cup with a stoppage-time win over Rochdale. Nicky Platt's chip put the non-League side ahead just before half time after he was put through by Jerome Wright.
Jake Cotterill made it 2-0 with a stunning strike before Anthony Elding headed one back for the hosts.
Craig Dawson's header from a corner levelled it before Norton poached the winner from Dale keeper Josh Lillis.
FC United were formed in 2005 as a breakaway club by supporters opposed to the Glazer family's takeover of Premier League giants Manchester United.

They play in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, four divisions below fellow Greater Manchester side Rochdale, who were promoted to League One last season.
The winning goal, in the fourth minute of added time, had an element of controversy about it as Rochdale claimed that Norton had kicked the ball out of Lillis's hands, but referee Geoff Eltringham waved away their protests, seconds before blowing the final whistle which prompted a pitch invasion from the jubilant United fans.
"I thought the referee was going to blow for a free-kick but he only had one hand on it," admitted Norton.
"We were dreading a replay, my legs wouldn't have taken it."
Manager Karl Marginson said: "I can't decide whether we deserved it or not.
"Rochdale were magnificent at times the way they moved the ball around, but we defended superbly apart from the two set-pieces which brought them back into the game."
Dale boss Keith Hill felt that FC United probably deserved their victory but was unhappy that the winning goal was allowed to stand.
"I think he [Eltringham] possibly got it wrong and it would be nice if the referee admitted to getting it wrong," said Hill.
"At the end of the day he has got the decision wrong but the goal stands. I thought FC were excellent, the crowd were electric, absolutely superb and they deserve to go through."
FC United are the first team to book their place in the draw for the second round, which will take place at approximately 1400 GMT on Sunday after the live television coverage of the match between Southport and Sheffield Wednesday.

Great to see, in these days of crazy money football. Long live the FA cup.

That said, this cup probably wouldn't exist, if it wasn't for the crazy money situation. It a strange old world :wacky::LOL:

As a Man Utd fan - I was following this yesterday - I think they took 4000 fans with them.

Are they still playing at Gigg Lane ? - There was talk of them building a new ground ?

I'll just swipe......

The club was founded on 14 June 2005 by supporters of Manchester United, dissatisfied with the club. Although those supporters had various reasons for their dissatisfaction with the club,[4] the prime catalyst for FC United's formation was dissatisfaction over the hostile takeover of Manchester United by the American businessman Malcolm Glazer.[5] Manchester United supporters had previously considered forming a new club in response to a proposed takeover by Rupert Murdoch in 1998, but the takeover bid was unsuccessful so the idea was not implemented.

Their main driving force was the rebellion against the Glaziers take over and the commercialisation of MUFC and the Premier League as a whole. They 'stood' for football on a Saturday at 3pm.

Well, until the TV companies came knocking of course.....

Just as bad as AFC Wimbledon.

Ah I see where you're coming from now.

I wasn't sure who you were calling hypocrits.

I get a bit fed up of the costs these days although I don't go as regularly since moving to Scotland. I'm watching United v Wolves on the PC just now - might even ditch Sky Sports.

Err Simon I happen to be an AFC Wimbledon supporter and am proud of my club and what we have achieved.

The concept and idea of the club was made a couple of years before the glaziers arrived

And what control do you think FCUM have over the TV companies scheduling?

Was a great performance.

Big it up for the little chaps :notworthy:

That dosn't make them hypocrites , if they wish to play in the league they play and enter into the f.a cup they will have little choice to play when told .. and all clubs need money to survive ... I wish them good luck for the next round .. What they have done in such a short time is amazing .. Credit where it's due ... (y)

Which is entirely your right. Doesn't mean I am not allowed to hold an opinion does it?

They do not have to consent to the game being moved - the dislike for such action being one of the reasons for their very existence.

Flies in the face of their stated 'beliefs' when forming the club though really.

I don't really see how the FCUM situation and the AFC one can be compared. AFC came about as a result of the club upping sticks and moving to MK thus removing the club from it's roots and it's supporters. They showed what they thought of their history when they were renamed MK Dons.

It wasn't a reaction to commercialisation, it was a reaction to losing their club.

I'm all for supporting AFC in their efforts, they've got a great fanbase and as a Kingstonian supporter that ground shares with them, excellent facilities compared to a lot of clubs. (I know there's alot of banter between the two sets of fans, but it's not relevant here).

So, keep up the good work AFC.

Set up to keep football in Merton, for the people of Merton...

because ther are both run by the fans for the fans.. one fan one vote.. perhaps?

But the breakaway by the Utd fans was a reaction to the overburdening debt created by the Glaziers. Whereas the AFC lot had their club uproot and move into a totally different area of the country.

That's what I mean by the two circumstances being uncomparable.

Have they heard anymore about the ground move yet? Last I heard was the waterworks site in Villiers Road.

There's alot of speculation and suggestion of various sites, both within Merton and Kingston, but not alot of firm info the last I heard.

One thing is the actual involvement of the Councils themselves. Kingston's seen to be the more accomodating of the two from what I've seen so far.

Not it wasn't.. the concept of fc united (without name or anything) was formed before the galziers even appeared.

However I agree they had two different reasons for starting but do have a lot in common.. its well documented that Wimbledon helped fc united setup as in advice and the like.. and as such play each other each yr for a trophy...

Ah didn't realise the previous history to them. So what was the reason for them coming into fruition? General commercialisation of the game?

About sums it up yes... two very relative snippets from the official website

The material theft of a Manchester institution, forcibly taken from the people of Manchester, was the tip of a pyramid of destruction, with changing kick off times for the benefit of television, soulless all-seater stadia full of 'new' supporters intent to sit back and watch rather than partake in the occasion, heavy handed stewarding and ridiculously priced tickets propping it all up.

and regarding wimbledon

The following week it was off to AFC Wimbledon, the club that gave them so much help and inspiration after they themselves became victims of a businessman who wanted a new toy, albeit in different circumstances

Personally i am not and nevr have been a fan of anything out of manchester.. not utd or city... however I do have the upmost respect and support for what fc utd have done and achieved on and off the field and I support 100% the idea behind the club and what they are aiming for.

Lots of reports of FCUM fans being throw backs to the bad old days of the late 70's early 80's.

Still I'm sure whoever has drawn them in the next round will give them a sound pummelling on the football pitch

Only in the sense that they enjoy the terrace like it used to be... been to a few games and never saw anyhting else :)

I was there on Friday night :)

Very good atmosphere!

They're still playing at Gigg Lane but running a Community Share Scheme to fund their own ground at Newton Heath.

Newton Heath - they really are going back to their (our) roots aren't they.

And completely unsupported by the Borough of Merton. There was simply nowhere for them to play within the borough. The Kingstonian ground is very close and provides excellent facilities to a club who are doing very well for themselves. Its not the same as the FC United thing at all!
