Yes

I have a severe case of Gear Aquisition Syndrome.... I soooo want need this lens....

Sony DT 50mm f1.8

I have a 50mm but it's a 2.8 and this one seems sooo nice. It's faster and will do pretty pictures in low light. *swoon*

Anyone have the same one? Do you recommend it?

Think I'll save up after I get back from the Chester meet.

That looks like a bargain to me.

As a Canon user I'd love a fast IS prime but I haven't got the option, you lucky Sony user!

I also have a similar disease known as lacifundulightus LFL not just lens induced but all thing nice unfortunately :(

The Minolta 50/1.7 is also excellent and can be bought s/h for about £70, if you keep your eyes open on ebay and the like.

I too confess to having this disease :help:

The first symptoms for me seem to be

1. reading lots of reviews of said lens

2. Evaluating current gear

3. reading MORE of reviews of said lens

4. Finding ways to fund Said lens

5. Convincing myself I don't need certain things in my camera bag.

6. Convincing myself I NEED said lens

7. Searching interest free finance options on said lens.

8. Selling the no longer needed items

Finally I take the plunge on the lens.

This is followed by a brief spell of guilt, and sickly feeling in the pit of the stomach.

This soon passes when said lens arrives at my door and is mounted on my camera...... Disease cured:bonk:

.......till the next bout goes around :gag:

Mark I've been doing just that ;) Think I'd like the sony one though, but not quite 100% adamant.

I really want this lens (or equivelent), I will get it

Anyone used the same one before? What's it like? Am I getting my hopes up to be shattered?

Philip, that's so right, they are the exact symptoms of GAS.

woof woof, it really is a bargain! There's a nice 28mm in Argos too, about £160ish (cheaper than WHE) I really want both but it's the 50mm that I want most.

Worst is when you get said lens ( on prescription :D) only to carry it around with you thinking that you might need it and find it never sees the light of day.

I can't comment on that lens Nat, but the Canon Nifty Fifty (f/1.8) is an amazing little lens for the money... as for GAS... I'm so convinced I really NEED the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens... but have precisely no way to find it...

Current AP is open on Mifsuds's ad and my GAS is so bad that the cat's left the room! Just need about four grand to cure my condition (and some kitchen roll and dettol to clear up the cat puke...)

LOL I've had a severe case of GAS recently, with the aquisition of a D700 and 24-70mm. I justify purchases to myself by saying I'll sell something but sometimes struggle to 'get around' to actually selling. I'll have to soon though, or I'll need (another) bigger camera bag! ;)

Eugh... a 2.8 fifty?!?! Sell it and buy the 1.8...!

My last bout of gas was a 5d2 to replace the 40D. Thankfully my GAS came up smelling of roses.

I love my aquisition.

Pepto bismol was required when I got my Eggy statement though LOL :D

Ahh, I remember that feeling well. In my case it was a Sigma 30mm f1.4.

"Ironically the 2.8 costs more than the 1.8!"

Is the f2.8 a macro? If it is that'd maybe explain why it costs more.

If it is a macro and you already have it I don't think that should stop you getting the faster lens too as they're for different things. I have a 50mm f2.5 "macro" and a 50mm f1.4 too. Perfectly sensible. :o)

Yep, that's right. The f1.8 would be able to do much better than the one I already have for portraits though. The one I have is a 50mm macro but has a little switch that you flick for macro/full. I mostly want it for faster glass tbh, means I can do portraits, inc pet portraits in substandard light that the f2.8 can't handle well. The other reason is that sonys have pants ISO and I don't like turning it up over 400/800 cause it starts to get really noisy.

There's no known cure for GAS I'm afraid... but you can alleviate it somewhat by buying the lens used. This way it's unlikely to cost you too much and if you change your mind you'll get virtually all of the cost back anyway.

Of course logic has little if anything to do with this hobby. Just don't get into L series primes!

cheers

That's only true for the CCD sensor cameras (a2xx and a3xx), the CMOS sensor versions (a4/5/7/8/9xx) fare rather better at high ISO. The CCD models are actually slightly sharper at ISO 100 though.

Ironically the 2.8 costs more than the 1.8!

not surprising, since 1.8 fifties can be had for silly cheap money since theyre so popular. Still, after owning one (and then upgrading to the 1.4... wishing I had the funds for a 1.2 :bonk:) you will never see slower glass in the same way again.

Whatever you do try not to get into film. There is a little known disease which affects those who buy a film camera called 'tryouticus newcamophillia'. It begins with a really cheap slr or rangefinder but soon the symptoms develop and you have to buy another slightly better but completely different make of camera and many lenses (because they are old and therefore cheaper). Soon you can be seen trawling around car boot sales a sad, shambling/shaking figure coming to life only when you see a glint of lens or the flash of a Nikon pentaprism.

I myself am in the middle stages as I have just bought a Nikon F3. There is no cure and eventually you will end up begging for film on the mean streets of some squalid town shooting with a beat up 90's point and shoot. Sad but true. :help:

hehe good job I can't wind on, isn't it? I do however, still have my old point and shoot from 98 and one of those kodak ones that wound itself off and on when you put the film in.

If you're not doing so already switch to shooting RAW and try Lightroom 3 (you can download a 30 day trial) - it does a much better job of handling noise on the Sony's, should be enough to make ISO 800 quite usable on the A350.

Of course, you then have to find the cash to buy a full copy of LR 3 if you discover you really do need it.
