Right, I've just added up the value of the kit I have. And it's getting close to £10k and it seems that I should get it insured.

This comes after walking in London and having a random come up and start telling me to give me the camera. Luckily I managed to say some words which the mods would not let me repeat on here. However I got away with it, unharmed and with all my stuff.

So my question is, what is the situation for kit which I do not have shop receipts for. I'm talking specifically about lenses and camera bodies...

I have had to claim on insurance before (when I was burgled), and was not payed out for stuff which I could not produce a receipt for. And I don't want to be in that position again!

Would CPS silver membership and some photo's with exif data be enough?

Ealing. I actually have family there. Was not actually that bad - just an idiot.
 
I dropped a 7D that I'd swapped a 60D and cash for. I was asked for receipts etc and explained I didn't have them but could supply a printed copy of the thread, a copy of the invoice for the 60D and bank statement to prove the transfer etc and there was no problems after that. My insurance is with Photoguard and while they aren't the cheapest insurer they do have some really good plus points, like no excess and cover for 'unattended items left in vehicles' etc. Worth having a google for them and getting a quote.

Top stuff. Thats sort of what I am after.

I am happy to pay a fair price for it, but don't want to have the "small print" rubbish.

I lost a lot of money when my flat was robbed. I calculated it was around 10 grand. Without a receipt they would not accept anything. I was 18 and did not have the knowledge or confidence to stand up for myself.
 
Taking photo's of your gear & recording serial #'s might be a good idea too.
 
Aaduki will insure second user kit as long as you inform them its used and give them the serial numbers. I have a couple of used items insured with them.
I cannot say how good they are in the event of a claim yet though. Their customer service team seem helpful enough though:)
You also have to give them serial numbers of anything that cost over £1000 new.

Edit - they also cover for most things including theft from a locked vehicle boot (worth checking this out as E&L cover this as ONLY as long as the boot is the only way in ie no estate curtain cover or hatchback is covered or even if you have a saloon with only a fold down armrest hatch as access they will not cover that either!). They cover water damage as long as you retrieve the item (don't drop it in a lake!)

Photograph your kit with your passport
Ideally you should have boxes
Some printouts of ads, etc

If it is a robbery you will need a police crime reference number. Hopefully this will not happen. Just carry a nice solid tripod and most of those will never even get tempted.
 
I've only ever been asked for serial numbers by E&L and Aaduki... I rarely keep physical paper receipts these days once warranty periods are expired and I think most insurers would see this as the norm these days, especially with a digital paper trail being more common. When my laptop got broken, the insurer just needed the broken machine for inspection - no receipts required.

sounds like another good reason for registering your kit. if nothing else it stores all the serial numbers somewhere other than a piece of paper that could get mislaid :thumbs:
