Wow. That is very nice.

OK that's enough of the silly playground stuff.

Joe has asked twice now to let it go.

Can we get this thread back on track please. It's about Joe's lovely new 100mm and the images it produces.

End of.

... and rightly so. I LOVE my 100mm f/2.8 L IS Macro. It's one of the sharpest I have.

Some flower shots using a 30D...

BTW, it's MUCH more than just a macro lens, it's the perfect focal length for portraits
and the IS + fast focus makes it ideal for ... running dogs... :)

No idea what you mean by that last remark, but given the title of thread it's hardly off topic to question what's so exciting about getting an 'L' lens now is it?

It's interesting that the only posts you've responded to are the ones about this debate, and you've completely ignored the photos the OP has posted, so you can hardly blame me for the way the thread has developed. Takes two to tango after all.

HahaHA! Barnaby you are one funny guy!

First of all, yes it was off-topic; the thread was about a macro lens that just happened to be an L, not about L lenses in general. Joe owns non L lenses and - shock horror! - non-Canon lenses, just like I do (like you have Nikon and non-Nikons yourself), so I hardly think he was a candidate to be condecended to about pitfalls of L-lens lust.

Oh, and I asked the OP to post some rock pics, I asked him to post a 100% crop, and I commented on them once he had; you were too busy hijacking the thread to notice.

Barney, if you can't see how you hijacked this thread to air your views on L lenses, then I give up. Honestly though, no hard feelings; you're all good chaps, but this Nikon/Canon/Olympus war thing is so puerile and is a blight on this otherwise great forum.

EDIT: Oops! My apologies, Grendel. We was only playing, like ;)

I think it is useful to know what people have to avoid asking dumb questions. And to direct asking advice on a particular thing appropriately. No problem there... Whether your Ls are red or black, may they be in focus...

The IS is good short tele work, and it's good that the AF is clearly good. My own macro lens is very slow to AF, but good for macro and portrait. The Canon 100 here shows an added benefit of use in action shots.

...and really unfair, there's more of you guys! :D

100% crop on the eye. The detail in the eyelashes looks pretty good to me. This was at ISO 640 by the way

I may have to lie down...

I count 'jumpy little buggers' as action shots - nice capture - the short focussing distance helps you get the shallow DOF for portraits that apparently only full-frame (ooh, sorry, that was a dig) is supposed to be able to get.

the 100% crop of the eye i posted looks good and the detail in the skin is pretty amazing, I didn't even realise she had little hairs on her cheek!

I can't beleeeeeeeive you got that lens for free, you b'stard!

That was me, you just didn't turn the lights up enough :naughty::lol:

Did Joe mean ISO 6400 when he put 640? I didn't know 640 was a do-able ISO setting on Canons.

1/3 stop less than 800 - I can choose to show ISO increments in full-stops or half or third stops - is that a config thing you have to enable on other Canons?

Yep  Thing is, fractions of stops of ISO are a software thing, done by up/downscaling from the nearest full ISO stop, therefore it's not a true ISO, but a firmware one.

Mine doesn't do it :dummy::bat::annoyed:

WAAAA HA HA HAHA I want a NIKON I want a NIKON!!! :dummy:

I think that depends on the camera body... On the E-3, it does actually change the sensor sensitivity between, say, 400 and 320 - not just use 400 and down-scale with consequences to the dynamic range. I've also heard (or did I imagine that), that on auto-ISO, some Nikons have even smaller sensitivity steps that are not obviously visible to the user.

thats is a crcaking lens you got there. I wish my Sigma EX 150mm Macro had IS or OS as Sigma calls it.

Hate you right now! :p

I hate you :)

Its not just about what it produces either is it, its about how it feels. I have no L series lens but I have a 50, 85 and a 100 (non IS). The 85 and 100 just feel so nice, the 50 produces great results but just doesnt have the 'feel' of the other two and I expect a 50 1.4/1.2 would feel just as nice as th 85/100's. I'm not surprised you feel smug with that 100 L macro, looks like you're going to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Look really good on a 1 series though wouldnt it? :)

Matt
