Okay so one of the negative sides of picking the Olympus E-P1 (on the review sites at least) is the lack of flash. The official Olympus unit is a tad expensive for my taste, especially as I prefer natural light most of the time.

After digging around the web for a while I found an interesting article on the Olympus T20 flash unit. A bit of a blast from the past this was originally designed for the Olympus OM 35mm film bodies.

It's by no means tiny but balances well on the E-P1 - I got mine in the post today so I'll be writing more once I've put it through it's paces...

Best part - it cost me £19 (y)

WOW!! Impressive! Would be nice to have our own section though.

Recent trip to New York with my G1 & 14-45mm - done an Andy West and have sold it now though

Alan, love the angle and colour of the taxi shot. Although it might not surprise you to hear that I think it would look great as a black and white conversion also ;)

Reposting here to help get things flowing:

I've been getting out and about quite a lot this past week as I've taken some time off work. Today I managed a quick trip to the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral with the wife.

I'm pretty chuffed with what I got in the space of 30 minutes.

I'd be interested to know how the t20 performs on auto with the ep1 John. My local second hand shop have one in at the moment and I've been thinking of picking it up to use on my OM body, but if it works well on the pen too and saves me shelling out the £100+ for the FL-14 then I'll definitely be grabbing one (y).

dull question but - can olympus ep1 meter with any lens ? and are the original mounts the same for every 4/3rds camera ?

The mount is the same on all m4/3rds cameras so lenses between the different brands can be used on any body.

Only lenses built for the system can auto focus, the rest are limited to manual focusing.

Had to hold it over my head to get the composition but it turned out okay.

Fantastic! Hoping to pick up the bargain price E-P1 soon:D

Not a chance, I've finally arrived - this is the camera for me.

Although you can pick them up at a bargain from Jacobs digital right now for £399 (including 17mm and OVF).

sorry, but my biggest concern was metering . can they do that with manual lenses via adapter ?

found it !

"As mentioned earlier Olympus is also launching two new adapters for the E-P1, allowing the use of standard Four Thirds lenses (with full functionality including autofocus) and OM mount manual focus lenses (obviously you'll only get manual focus but you do get metering)"

Yep I can confirm that metering works fine on the ep1 with legacy lenses, obviously you have to set the aperture on the lens but the camera calculates the correct shutter speed. I've got a m42 mount mamiya lens on mine at the moment.

that's really great as I have some nice old lenses as well . a EP1 body then is very desirable for me as a general walkaround. I'll leave the bulky stuff to film cameras.

looks like soon I'll be searching for an used EP1 body ! :)

EP1 has £290 off in Currys, it's now £309.

hmm.. the ebay has them at 260 something refurbed. selling the lens for some moneys and then getting a 28mm prime would be a good option I think.

You really want the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 - it's soooo sharp even wide open, and IBIS combined with a fast lens sounds like a killer combination to me.

For those deciding whether or not to get the Ep1 or the Epl1 id say go for the ep1. having had both the pl1 is much more plasticky and is basic. it seems as if its aimed at the beginner. Plus the ep1 is much better looking!

it's bloody expensive ! :( . but I believe that it's well worth it !

and as I said - I'll need the op1 just as a good small digi to shoot because the more serious stuff will be done with film cameras.

thanks

10% of my mind was actually looking at the epl1 but now it's back to zero.

£219 unboxed from a kit at Mather's - I don't think that's too bad. It is extraordinarily good.

Exactly my thoughts when I was looking, the 20mm is amazingly sharp and the IBIS gives me that extra bit of wiggle room when shooting in dim/low light (which I do quite a bit).

The image below is a good example, taken @ ISO800, f1.7, 1/30th sec. The room was extremely dark so I had to push up the ISO and open the lens wide open (which I wanted anyway to isolate one or two or the cards). This was handheld and I have no doubt that without the IBIS would have shown some sign of handshake.

Which you can see from the 100% I don't have ;)

I'm also pleasantly surprised by the performance in lowlight, it's certainly not my D700 but it can produce usable pictures up to ISO1600.
