My new studio

anything for a quiet life:

the back wall is white 'onest guv

the curve templates are starting to look good
IMG_2450.jpg

model's eye view (I told you matt black is a bugger to work with)
IMG_2451.jpg

The more gentle the curve, the easier it is to get even lighting on the cyc.
Not sure from your pic, but the radius looks a bit small to me...

Nice one mate :) You know I was only joking though? :bonk:

Looks great, seems everything is falling in its right place. Seems a lot bigger as well.

60cm high and 60cm deep (or 2' in old money)
more would have been better but I didn't want to encroach on the floor space
will have to see how well I can light it :help:
I've nominated two of Lencarta's finest for that job
what do you suggest? no attachments or white umbrellas, or ...?

:) 17mm lens works wonders on size!

Looking great! I wish I had the space to do something similar in my garden

I have now cycled to infinity!

here are the frames in place
IMG_2455.jpg

then the MDF curve
IMG_2459.jpg

finally add filler - once it's dry (tomorrow) it'll need sanding
IMG_2462.jpg

it'll need more filler and sanding to hide all the screw holes

would I do anything different?
yes
MDF frames aren't really tough enough
I'd use 1" ply next time - or even :puke: real wooden wood!

looking good

.... and where's today's picture !

ah - well - d'you see
excuses:
a) er the filler's not dry yet
b) thumbs got damaged doing the infinity bit and they keep bleeding on the filler
reality:
lazy git took day off

on the + side - I ordered some lighting booms on Monday - and they arrived today
only trouble is I ordered 120 cm poles - must have shrunk in the post - 90 cm poles delivered
actually they fit better anyway
so rather than send them back and wait for the "right" ones to arrive - supplier will refund the difference :)
just need to get off backside and fit them now :(

today's update

rubbed down infinity (took for ever :coat:)
installed lighting booms
and took test shot to see how it all hangs together:

Its looking really nice. Thanks for taking the time to show us all

thanks for the comments
still a way to go
but it's starting to look like it might actually happen! :):):)

As said its looking nice . i just hope you enjoy it in there..

cheers (y)
bottle of cheap sherry and box of smutty magazines already installed!

i have just found this thread, it looks tip top mate.

i am surprised that no one has yet had the cheek to ask how much it has cost you? so, if you dont mind, roughly what has it cost to get to this stage. (building and dec only, not photographic equipment.)

Top job though, very impressive

ah - was expecting someone would ask
here's the breakdown (and I nearly did...)

basic shed (labour) £1,250
basic shed (materials) £2,600
electrics £600
infinity curve £100
paint/sundries £200
gutter/water butt £100

so not much change out of £5k :puke:

actually I wish I hadn't done that calculation now!

I have seen infinity - and it's white!

IMG_2479.jpg

single on camera flash so not perfect lighting

only basecoat for now
once that's dried the real white goes on

needs a tiny amount of filling first (again!!!)

That's looking V good (y)

What made you decide to only have the background in white and not the sides as well?

I'm saying from a point of view (from experience) that unless shooting straight on with a reasonable length lens, there's always going to be the possibility of the black side edges encroaching into the frame of your shot? If you're going to be getting in close with a faily wide lens this factor would easily double and crop up even more?

Not sure what your going to be shooting in there so you may have already factored that in.

Just a thought.

well it's 12' wide so I should be able to get quite a lot in before the black encroaches
main reason for black walls is to reduce the amount of flare/wraparound from the lights aimed at the back wall
should give more control over lighting the subject

that's what I told the walls anyway! :rules:

It looks amazing!!!

I am showing the hubby so he knows what I want in the loft conversion, 'see, it can be done'.

Mr Rudesing wishes to point out that he realises it can be done but wonders why Mrs Rudesing thinks it's possible for him to do it

Hurry up and get it finished! Its not even mine and im excited

cheers everyone for the feedback and encouragement
I think I've only got one more sesion with the sandpaper followed by a coat of white between me and pictures

with a following wind - today?!?!?

Looks great. Where did you get the light booms / brackets from?
I fancy a set of them would save me loads of space.

cheers Martin
I got the booms from here

I'm using the 90cm size - fits a treat

I'M not keen on the white b/g

wink wink

looking good Mike :)

looking good Mike :)
thanks Geroge!

Do you know what flooring you are going to put down? :)
I'm going to extend the white backdrop/curve/train another 4 foot (120cm for the young'uns) and paint that the same white
If I'd had my act together it would have gone down already
I was going to then cover it with white acrylic but that is veeeeeery expensive
Homebase do 4mm perspex sheet for a fraction of the cost so I'll give that a whirl (it'll be on top of the MDF so I can remove it if wanted)
then the rest of the floor will be carpeted - probably carpet tiles so I can replace them easily

then we're down to furniture - chair, sheepskin rug, casting couch...

Mike that is starting to look like the biz m8... (y)

Will you be using infinity in its natural state or will you be covering it in use with background papers of different colours and so on...

Forgive my naive question but you might have guessed I am no studio 'spert... :naughty:

:p

EPIC! Not jealous at all :p Fair play, I think you've done a fantastic job for yourself there. Now just roll in the models!

:p

why thank you your slithery greenness!

plan A is to use the cyclorama (ooh get me!) 'au naturel' to start with
I've been reading the "light - science and magic" book so there's lots to try
Should be able to achieve white, grey and black if I do my homework right
Next up will probably be coloured gels on the backlights

oh - and what make you think I'm an expert! :)nuts:)
