So we're expecting our first baby in 12 weeks time and naturally I have been merticulously planning the first 'shoot'. :) I have a few props from a planned shoot that never happened for a friend: hats, blankets etc. The missus doesn't like the baby-in-the-bucket shot so it's going to be quite standard stuff. The one silly thing that I can't commit to is a beanbag. I've looked at the lastolite baby poser but fancy just a large beanbag with some of the extras you can get to prop them up with. Would a normal half decent beanbag filled very fully do the job? Just struggling justifying £100 for a one-off.

I've just had my little one and I'm running around trying to buy the right stuff. I've ordered the beanbag and just waiting for it to arrive, I hope it gets here by tomorrow. Shoot planned for Sat.
It may have been cheaper for me to go to a pro, but I wanted to do it myself.

Great pics by the way.

Small bed from ikea is a good prop this is what I used I just painted it cream

The floor and the background are vinyl and just a small length of skirting board pre primed

I'm going to but the vinyls up for sale in ye classified soon just not for round to it yet

May I ask how old the children are in these images?

I understand that there is only a small time window to get these styles of images.

Also what are the vinyls placed on, what lighting set up did you use?

Thank you

Mani

Firstly congratulation.

Did you buy the beanbag? If not you don't need one, it's just easier if you do it regularly. Some good cushions work just as well, then use muslin cloths to stuff under a blanket where needed to lift up the baby!
But these shoots aren't easy, babies don't do as requested! You can set up a low backdrop stand (if you have one) and use clips to pull the blanket straight.

Mani did you photograph your baby? Congratulations also :)
Natural lighting is best if you have it, light coming down across the face not up lighting the nostrils :)

It's recommended that 'newborn' shoots are done before two weeks old as they're a bit more sleepy. But breast fed babies don't always listen to that rule! A lot of poses can be achieved with older babies!

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice all.

Beanbag arrived last week, just need to get some filling now.I have stands etc to pull the blanket straight. Have a mix now of cloths, blankets and head wear. I will probably not focus on building a couple of 'sets' as Graeme has initially. Probably do those a little afterwards, just fancy some basic shots to begin with.

Thank you, yes I also bought a beanbag and the fill. I will now need to sell it on.

I did a mini photoshoot and posted the pics onto the critique section.

Thank you.

Where does everyone buy their vinyls can i ask ?

do you have any shots of how the vinyls join together ie look like a straight wall ! is it just skirting sat up and the "wall" vinyl pulled up on a lighting/backdrop stand ?

good shots above too

Personally i either use a lenght of skirting or simply hang the background at the right height so they meet without bending. I also use an MDF sheet under the floor to stop wrinkles (and edit out any that happen anyway)

Most of my vinyles come from Click however a few are normal flooring type.

I should have also mentioned. Click Backdrops come with eyelets and any that I have that didn't come with them I have added some. I then have some hooks on one wall meaning they just hang on the the hooks ready to go. Nice and easy to swap them out then. Of course that would only work with a studio or other permanent set up.

some lovely newborn shots here look forward to seeing more
