Hi all
i have been offered a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 mk 1 for £1200 seems a little dear (i think one went on here not to long ago for about £1000)but it is like new. Now is there much diff between the mk 1 and the newer mk 2?

Would you go for the older one or try and save some more pennies and buy the newer model, many thanks gary.

£1,200 is a little expensive for the mk 1. If I were buying new now I would get the mk 2, if nothing else it'll hold its value better

I've had both and especially on FX bodies the mk2 is probably the better bet, although on a DX body the reviews suggest you might not notice the difference too much as some of the improvement is in the corners. Also, as Hugh says, the mk2 will hold its value better.

As you say, £1,200 also seems a bit high for a used mk1 - they seem to be going for £1,000-£1,100 on eBay at the moment.

I agree with the other posters - £1200 is expensive... Are they set in stone with the £1200

Then again how desperate are you wanting the 70-200 VR... Can you wait till you make up the difference or maybe even ask them to drop down a few quid (lots)..

Mine is mint but it didn't come with a box (Grays of Westminster) & I didn't pay £1200 for it - so bargains can be found

That's the kind of money I bought my VR1 for last February. Perfect in every way and I love it. Paid that kind of price because I wanted it really quickly.....a week later I had enough to have got a VR11 if I'd waited... D'oh !!
Keeping the VR1 though, I reckon I'd only get £1000 for it now. That means adding another £650 to get VR11. Can't justify that.

hi everyone

I have a D90 and would love to get a 70-200 f2.8 (i only currently have the basic 55-200 Nikon lens as a telephoto)... and i'm debating the same VRI / VRII issue.

pricewise, you'd be looking at:
VRI used - £1000
VRII new - £1600

if I HAD to I could push to paying 1600 for new, but the 600 difference really is quite something.

in effect I could get a VRII or

- a used VRI and a 2nd used (or new!) D90 body
- a used VRI and a.n.other decent second lens
- a used VRI and 600 quid in my pocket
- a used VRI and <insert £600 worth of stuff here>

would really appreciate any thoughts/advice :)

The VR2 handles better (IMHO) and will hold its value better over the long term. If you bought it for £1,600 now in a years time (if you look after it) it'll probably be worth £1,550

That said, I've no idea how much a VR1 will depriciate, but superseeded lenses tend to los value quicker.

If thats not a big consideration. on a D90 the VR1 will be ace, but I think the 55-200 punches well above its cost as well.

Cheers

Hugh

thanks Hugh, yeah I've been very impressed with the 55-200, it was my first lens purchase! a main reason i'm after the f2.8 is that I'm looking to do more indoor photography and particularly gigs/concerts/events, as well as outdoor events. I have the Tamron 28-75 which I love for lowlight, but to have an equivalent with a greater reach is tempting/necessary!

I'm going to be getting a 70-200 around Christmas too with the same dilemma. I think having FF probably swings it to the vr2 though. Personally if I was in your position with no FF plans I would get a VR1 but don't pay much over £1000!

£600 will buy an SB900 and 50mm f1.4!

there's lots of weighing up to do!
i don't think i'll be changing from the D90 for a while, i only upgraded to it from a D60 in January... and the VR1 still works on a FF right? but i appreciate it's 'better' in a few areas, naturally as it's an update!

financially i could go for a new vr2 (i don't mean that to sound being flush, obviously £600 is a LOT!).

at the end of the day the VR1 is obviously an amazing lens and i'd have thought that if you said to any tog, if they HAD to trade in their VR2 to for a VR1 forever, then they're not going to be super-disappointed?

There are some factory refurbs on eBay at the moment. VR2. £1360. My mate got one. Just like new, not in a gold box though !

hmm how about £1000 for a 2nd hand vr1?

would you trust buying a refurb off ebay?

£950-£1k is about right for a good one. No problems with a refurb from ebay as long as its a good seller - I know thats easy to say, but as any othe rajor purchase from ebay, check feedback, paypal and credit card etc

The company selling the refurd ones on ebay (the cheetah express) are selling new ones at £1495

eek tempting! seems to be a US model... but worldwide nikon warranty anyway as they all are

but then it's still £500 more than a used VR1... almost back to square one

How does the current 80-200mm 2.8 ED fair against the mark I VR?...from what I can glean similar image quality but slower focus speed. Is much slower?...and is it still very accurate?
