I currently use a Nikon 28/105 AF-D lens as my general walkabout lens, but I think that the 24/120 AFS F4 lens may be little better for my purposes - a little bit more at both ends. The cheaper version, the 24/120 3.5/5.6 doesn't have a good reputation with sharpness.

Has anyone experience of using the later lens?

I had both the 24-70mm f2.8 and the 24-120mm f4 lenses, the latter bought as a kit with a D750. I thought it would be a lightweight walkaround alternative to the 24-70mm but didn't expect to be so impressed with it. So much so that it was often my lens of choice ahead of the 24-70mm. It's a good performer and the extra reach and IS were really useful.

I use one and it's a great lens. So much so, that I have never needed to consider the 24-70 2.8.

I have other faster lenses if I need them, but only very rarely would I need to use them. The 24-120 is a perfect walk-around lens IMO.

Had one and thought it was a very good lens, although IIRC I only paid around £350 for it and so my judgement may be different. I’m not sure it’s worth the rrp.

I'd be the same I'm sure - I bought mine from a seller on here for £400.00 (might have been £450.00) almost new and the warranty was passed on to me.

100% in favour. I know where there is one still in the box priced at £375 I will still have to keep my 28/105 because the 24/120 will not work on my F4 except possibly in Programme mode.

I've had both versions of the Nikkor 24-120 and still have the f/4 constant aperture one. IIRC, I traded the older one in against some of my Fuji kit (and was glad to see the back of it! It came as the kit lens with my D700). Not as fast as an f/2.8 24-70 but for me, the extra reach is more important than the speed. Plenty sharp enough for my wants/needs, especially once stopped down to f/5.6 or smaller.

I do believe the 24/70 F2.8 was a heavier built lens, a damn good lens for professional use. A bit like my 35/70, but as heavy as half a brick. Almost as sharp at F2.8 as at F8

I will stick with Nikon as I have done for many years. I can already cover 105mm with the 28/105AFD, I just need something a bit longer as well as a touch wider.

Another vote for the 24-120 f/4 - it's the only mid-range zoom I have now as the others (including the 24-70 f/2.8) neber got to be used. I have it on my D750 all the time unless I'm using the 150-600 :)

I really like the 28-105. But like you, I was wanting something a bit wider. The Tamron SP 24-135 fit the bill for quite awhile. But I am now using the Nikon 24-120 f/4, and really liking it.

I've used both the 28-105 and the old variable aperture 24-120. The 28-105 is a much better lens, but I believe the fixed aperture 24-120 to be quite a bit better than that.

I bought a Tamron 24-135 from a member here, and it was badly decentred with no chance of repair.

I guess I should slap my Tamron SP 24-135 onto my D780 body, take a few test snaps and see how it fares when compared to the 24-120 f/4 glass...

It’s a good all round lens but don’t expect miracles. As with any ‘super’ zoom it’s not without its compromises and sharpness does fall off at the long end. For me it’s an almost perfect focal length and it covered an entire holiday without needing to change lenses!

As an aside I understand the new Tamron 35-150 is exceptional (for what it is!)
The 35-150mm f2.8-f4 is a very versatile lens IMO. Vignette's a bit with some distortion but sharp enough. Since I got mine it's my most used lens on a D780.

I appreciate this is an old thread, however. I have this lens and use it regularly as my walkabout lens on a D610. I have found it to be a very capable lens, light(ish) and fits well to my hands. Great for general street photography IMHO.
I also have 10-20, 50 and 60 lens which I use for specific subjects/types of photography. However the 24-120 is my most used lens when not photographing wildlife.

It's the kit lens with the D850, I bought mine 11 years ago when they came out and spent approx £900 for it to go with my D3.

I have only appreciated it more since I got the 24-70/2.8 (non-VR) and tested the 2 side by side and realising what a superb all-round lens it is.

When I had Nikon, I found the same. Once I appreciated what the 24-120 f4 could do I sold my 24-70.
