Nikon D850 - Owners Thread

anyone used the photo stack function
i watched a couple of tutorials on it seem easy enough to do
what happens to the file size if you use say 150 shots of a rose so its all pin sharp
from front to back does the file size increase by 150 times ??

Does the DX mode frame sit within the FX mode frame in the viewfinder, allowing you, for example, to see a bird flying in to the DX frame before it actually arrives? I seem to remember that when the first reviews came out.
Yep, and you can set it so that the area outside the DX frame is slightly shaded to help with framing, but also see outside of the frame (y)
anyone bought a 3rd party grip for the d850 that gives it the extra fps that the nikon one does ??
Some do and some don't, worth reading the reviews as most will tell you one way or the other (y)

I'm on one of those Magazine photo challenges on Monday/Tuesday in the Lakes and they are lending me a D850 for the duration

We're just shooting Landscapes, and in particular any sunset/sunrise (yes, they want sunrise shots in July - gulp)

Should be interesting :)

Dave
I look forward to seeing your shots. I'd love to got to the lakes.

Have you never been to the Lakes bud?

Its going to be an interesting shoot as I never walk up a big hill for a photo, and they want us to do that for both sunrise & sunset !!! I can feel me-old legs groaning at that, assuming me-old lungs or heart doesn't give in first :D

I've organised another 5 day shoot in the Lakes at the end of October where 6 of us have rented a house for 5 days/4 nights, its fully booked but you might be interested in that for the future? Its not a workshop, just a bunch of folk shooting together and sharing ideas/cars even - only costing us £140 each for 4 nights (aside from food and beer that is lol)

Dave

I had to do it for a BBC Countryfile shoot a few weeks ago. Followed a hill walker/climber up a few hills. Legs were pretty much ok but lungs struggled. Kept stopping to catch a breath but got there in the end and the views were worth it.

Take it at your pace remembering your carrying heavy equipment.

I never had that luck as i was following a walker all over, she had did 2 weeks walking and camping around Loch Lomond and the national park and i had to follow her to the most scenic places over a few days. Luckily i do 40km a day on an exercise bike so legs were fine although i have a badly worn knee which ached for a few days afterwards. Which mag are you working with.

I have been a couple of times some years ago before I was into photography, but I'd love to go back now and spend some time up there. Those workshops sound great, the issue for me is getting the time off work, and it's just that bit too far to go there and back in a day for me. That being said, body allowing I'm hoping to get back into motorbiking so a run up to the lakes for the day might not be out of the question ;)

anyone know what 3rd part grips raise the fps
i cat seem to find one
Looking at user feedback on amazon both the mcoplus and pixel do when used with the EN-EL18 batteries for which you need the bl-5 adapter. I haven’t used either grip though, just relaying feedback.

Well, I'm back from my photoshoot with Digital Camera Mag in the Lakes with the D850 - and while most of the UK sweltered in baking sunshine we had almost constant drizzle, only breaking for proper rain lol

I was given a D850 with a 50mm f1.8 and I thought I'd leave the rest of the gear in the car and just shoot with that; most of the time at or below f2.8 too

My review then is, well, its a camera and takes nice BIG images; other than that I didn't see anything in my 24 hours with it that'd make me want to buy one anytime soon and defo not for Wedding work. As a specific Landscape and general shooting camera though and IF I was printing BIG it'd defo be worth it, just not at the moment

Anyway, here's a taster of what I shot - with the under the jetty one being Ashness Landing as the water level is so low !!!

The light in the 4th is stunning :)

Looking at getting an XQD for my 850 - Where's the best places to purchase at the moment?
Thanks!

Photospecialist was the cheapest when I bought mine, but camreapricebuster is also a good place to check prices.

can you expand a bit on that statement as i think its
great for a wedding tog due to being able to crop right in
so can cut down on the lens's they need to carry

Okies...

1 - nobody needs 45mp for Weddings. As most albums are 25x35cm or less even for a double-page spread 12mp is plenty. Around 20-24mp as most pro cameras are we already have more then enough to be able to crop hard if needed and give the highest printable quality images

2 - I shoot well over 90% of my Wedding images on a 35/85 combo and rarely crop much more than straightening, my 'crop' / 'zoom' is merely walking forwards or backwards. Anyone thinking they can just crop is stupidly lazy, but most still use zooms anyway, so that's 'cropping' already

3 - the D850 isn't as good at high ISO as its lesser pixel count siblings, in high ISO situations the 'advantage' of big crops would only show this more

4 - buying a pair, most Wedding togs use 2 of the same, is a waste of some £4000 over a pair of D750 (Nikon's best Wedding camera IMO), no pro would ever waste that sort of money as its not business sense

5 - even as raw compressed (lossless) files in my use they came in at around 60mp, 2-3x bigger than the D750, this needs MUCH more storage = cost, and slows down PP - the added time factor being the biggest PITA

These are just my top 5 but I'm sure there's others - so to repeat - defo not for Wedding work :D

I too think the D750 makes more sense as a wedding camera tbh, for the weight saving over the two cameras if nothing else, but as you say the noise handling and file size also favour the D750 for this kind of work. However, there are a couple of counters to this. Firstly you can use the D850 with medium file size, making it 25mp from memory, also in terms of noise then once you've downsampled the D850 files (assuming you've shot at full res) there's not really any perceivable difference in noise handling compared to the D750. The thing is though, why would you buy a D850 only to use it with medium file size when you can buy the D750 much cheaper and it's lighter, and whilst the noise handling is pretty comparable (IMO) after downsampling you then have the issue of the large file sizes ;) It hard to justify the D850 for weddings isn't it ;)

Couple of things I would say though is that for me 14 bit lossless files are around 50-52mb not 60mb, but still 20mb or so more than the D750, although tbh I've not noticed any difference in LR except building 1:1 previews, which I just set to do and leave the computer to it. Secondly, at the high ISO's there's less colour shift from the D850 from my experience. This wouldn't be enough for me to use a D850 for weddings over a D750 though ;)

Trying to find info on using face detection autofocus in live view and finding very little about it, anybody used it?

Mike
In live view it's called face priority AF found on page 42 of the manual. You need to set this on the AF mode and then if a face is present it 'should' put a box around the face and focus on it. I've never used it though. I did try face detection 3D AF (using the viewfinder) and it didn't work well for me.

Yes I know what it is, I know how to set it but nothing details how to use it, hence looking to find anybody that has used it

I believe it's as simple as selecting face priority AF, the camera then picks up the face and then will track it around the frame with the focus point to save you either having to constantly manually move the AF point or track with your camera. I don't think there's anything else to it tbh, unless I'm missing the point of what you're asking? (wouldn't be unusual ;))

I’ve used it to stack 10 260mb TIFFS. The resulting file was 160mb after a small crop.

Thats what I thought but the focus area does not seem to be tracking but will be carrying out more tests

Mike

I would say though is that for me 14 bit lossless files are around 50-52mb not 60mb, but still 20mb or so more than the D750

Just checked from my last Wedding - D750 files are generally 22-24mb, and my D850 ones are 52-57mb, so 30mb bigger at least not 20 ;)

As much as I'd love a D850 for that awesome resolution it'd be for all sorts of stuff that I like to shoot, but NOT Weddings, where its simply overkill and economically pointless

That said, as I haven't printed ANYTHING in years that wasn't in a Wedding Album buying a D850 at all would be pointless at the mo :( If I ever wanted big prints though, it'd be my first choice over the MF ones for ease and obviously cost too, where it then would make sense :)

I'll give mine a try at some point and see if it works any better. I'll not hold my breath though ;)

For some reason I thought my D750 files were just over 30mb, me and my bloody memory ;) I think we are in agreement that the D850 is overkill for weddings though (y)

Got mine up to 9fps now. Ex pro batteries x 2 and dual charger + battery chamber cover £250.

I assume this £250 included grip?

No I already had a grip. That’s a must as far as im concerned with any camera that doesn’t come like a D5/1DX2

Just wondering why it came to £250 then? I paid £115 for the Ex-Pro Dual Charger and 2 x EN-EL18 batteries, and £27 for the OEM Nikon BL-5 Cover.

Finding it cheaper wasn’t a problelem.. Finding it cheaper and in stock was. Even expro direct didn’t have them although they showed them in stock until I ordered them and then got an e-mail telling me they were out of stock.

I’m happy enough with £250, the odd £100 quid is immaterial in the overall cost of buying the camera and lenses.

This is my first serious attempt using the stacking function on the camera.

Bee
Nice. I assume that's a dead bee, either that or he's really compliant at staying still whilst you take multiple photos ;)
