Yes
After still waiting to get a 550D and no sign of one yet I might seriously consider going Nikon D90 as it seems to be favoured over the Canon 550D..... and I'm fed up waiting.....

so any help/advice please people as I've only been Canon since last Aug so I can be retrained

1) Canon 550D is new with new Technology
2) Nikon D90 is 2 years old I think- older technology?
3) I have a 2 lenses for Canon so would have to sell them-hassle
4) after 9 months I understand what a good and bad lens is for Canon, no idea what is good or bad for Nikon
5) Both about the same price

Can anyone help/advise who knows or understands about both models..........

I can only have a go at )2 and )3 Well, the D90 has the same sensor as the D5k, and I am very pleased/impressed with the quality. Lens wise, the 18-70 takes some beating, and you can get them for round abouts £100. I've just took the plunge with the Nikon 70-300 VR, and am Very pleased with it. If thats too much, the Nikon 55-200 VR is a stellar performer too. 550D has the same body layout (pretty much) and the 500D, so if you have a go of the 500 and its not for you, then try the D90. IMHO, D90 handles superbly. :)

I was a Canon user for many years until 2006 when I switched to Nikon. Both systems have their strengths and stellar performers among their lens line-ups. The best way for you to make your final decision is probably to go to a shop where you can handle both bodies and take your time to decide which feels right for you. With the current technology and range of equipment, I think you can't go far wrong with either system. Good luck!

I faced the same dilema a month ago.
Went with the nikon and have no regrets so far.
My old camera was a 350d so the comparison is a bit unfair.
The controls on the nikon are SOOOO much better. I can quickly and reliably change most of the settings. I can see what the settings are.
There is a quick reset to defaults (the 2 green buttons)
much better noise
MUCH better view finder.

What i didnt like
No af switch button by default (easy to sort by assiging to the function button)

The 550 has sorted lots of these but still isn't as easy to control (for me) too many menus.

Neither!!
How much photography experience do you have?
What do you like shooting?
Have you got any investment in glass?

(You could try a 40D or a 5Dc)

My D90 is 18 months and 5000+clicks old. It does everything from sports (equestrian mainly) to fill in flash, to low light etc, you name it and it handles the situation with consumate ease producing fantastic results each and every time.

Build quality is great, focussing fast and secure, metering on matrix is so accurate, auto on bridge rarely makes any significant changes, battery life is excellent.

I remain impressed by its sheer competence every time I use it.........I cannot realistically find any downside to it. I bought the D90 over the 450D which frankly felt Fisher price by comparison, but the 550 may be better.

I was choosing a camera among 550D, 50D and D90 but finally I chose the 50D. I don't think the 550D will feel good in you hands as it is small and toooo plastic. The D90 feels better although it is also plastic body, and the 50D feels best among these three.

Since the 550D is new, it has some new features and I heard that 550D is better for its high ISO performance compared with 50D (I think not too much difference).

So actually you are choosing from hands feeling and new features. If you think hands feeling is more important to you, choosing one from 50D or D90. Other wise, choose 550D.

But my suggestion is 50D or D90. Both are good.

A workmate has just bought the 550D.
Despite its miniscule size it takes superb images and truly amazing HD Movies.
Can't comment on the D90 but my mate has the D80, D300 & D3 and I find the menus and instruction manuals so infuriatingly complicated.
It could be that I am so used to the simpler Canon layout.
Nikon owners will probably disagree as they are used to their layout.

Whatever you choose I'm sure you won't be disappointed as I don't think Canon or Nikon have produced a bad camera.
Yes, some are better than others but still 2 great camera manufacturers

interesting reply, I would have thought you needed answers to your next 3 questions before that comment but here goes

1) Loads with P&s, 10 months Canon 450D recently
2) Landscapes and family
3) Tamron 17-50f2.8, Canon nifty fifty, Canon 55-250

so what would your advice now be JEmrson?
Thanks

I've been sort of debating this too but I am more thinking of D90 vs second hand 40D. I'm sort of put off by the excessive megapixel count of the 550d, and I would quite like the higher speed burst mode of the 40d.

What puts me off 2nd hand is the fact that if anything goes belly up with the camera you have to spend a load of money to get it sorted.

I am looking for my first DSLR and decided to buy new.

everyone will agree that the nikon Auto-focus is superb even in the entry level cams. so if intend to shoot fast moving action and cant afford the canon 1 series go for a nikon

The fact the D90 is 2 years old is irrelevent.
The quality of the image does not deteriorate as the model gets older.
You need to buy the camera that
Fits your budget
Fits your hands comfortably
Has a control layout/menu system you find most intuitive.

Remember all cameras take good pictures, you make them great.

I thought the Nikon D90 has LOADS more menus than a 550D? I've heard the 550D hasn't enough menus to change settings, I could be wrong though

It might have more menus not sure didnt count them cant imagine there is much difference in total! I should have been more clear. Since I used the d90 i dont have to use the menu so I dont see them as much.
With the canon you have to use a menu to change a setting with the d90
most of the settings are changeble by holding a button and scrolling.

E.g. to change the iso on the cannon press the iso button. This brings up the iso menu then select the iso.
d90 press and hold the iso button then rotate the dial till the iso you want is there and the dial is in the rigth position to hold the camera so you dont need to change how you hold it.

Hope that makes sense :)
