Hi,

A friend's teenage daughter has an interest (and talent) for photography and last year she invested in a Nikon DSLR.

He is looking for a zoom lens for her hopefully in the 70/200 range (or thereabouts).

The budget is around £300. Being a Canon user myself I'm clueless about the Nikon side of things so would appreciate a few options for me to look into.

It doesn't have to be Nikon I suppose, just looking for the best I can find within the budget.

TIA..........

Nikkor 70-300VR around £370 ... gets really good reviews

Nikkor 55-200VR around £170 ... is the budget option, but not bad value for money.

Personally I would save the extra £70 and go for the 70-300

These come up second hand on here and rarely sell for over £300 most go for around £275

The camera is D3000 with 18-55 kit lens.

Keep the ideas options/opinions coming folks.

Nice replies so far.

Only two real choices - 70-300 or an older 80-200. I'd hunt down the latter as it's a pro lens with constant f 2.8.

Another vote for the 70 - 300mm VR Nikkor.

Every so often Argos offload the 70-300VR on eBay at just over £300 inc P&P. I'm sure they were selling them earlier in the week but I can't see any now....worth keeping an eye on them. They are brand new.

I'd like to suggest the Nikon 18-200 VR,
a really good lens, nice and compact, and no where near as heavy as the 70-300 lens.
It all depends what she wants to use it for,
It is easily bought 2nd user for around £300

New Nikon 70-300VRII I was going to suggest a s/h 80-200 but as she has the D3000 it wont autofocus so I wont suggest that....

And there is ofcourse the 55-200 which is an absolute cracker of a lens for the money. I wanted slightly more reach, so I sold mine for the 70-300 but if you are happy with the range you can't go wrong with that one. Sold mine for £115.

Another vote for the 70-300 VRII

The 80-200 is a ton - strongly recommend the 70-300 VR, would go much better with her camera.

Just my two penn'th about the 50-200mm VR; brilliant value for money at the short end, getting rapidly less good at the long end.

hi

i have had the nikon 70-300 vr and it takes fantastic pictures for the money.

thanks

Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 two touch is best for IQ but heavy and no VR, (equivelent of canon's IS). As many others have already said, Nikkor 70-300 is a good lens and has VR too. It is also lightweight compaired to the 80-200. Only negative is it's a bit soft at the long end. This can be minimized by setting to f8 whenever possible.
By the way. I had the 70-300 but traded up for a 80-200 and a300 f4.

Thanks to all the above who contributed.

It looks like it's the 70-300VR then.

Thanks again for your help and guidance. It turns out that Nikon peeps aren't quite so bad after all ;)
