Thanks mate.

I'm back again but this time with a couple of flies. I feel #1 should be easy but I can't get a definitive id of it on the sites I've visited.

Still looking for an ID for this critter, unless I've missed any posts with a definitive answer.
Hi guys, here's one I cant find in the books I have, there are similar ones shown but with enough differences for me to rule them out. Can anyone here help please.
Its around 10mm in length.
Probably going to be a common species and show my lack of knowledge up

Thanks Bryn. I still can't find an id for #1 though if anyone else has an idea.#2 is a hoverfly.
Suspect ortevinia maculata but have a check on. Hard to tell from side view.

Thanks Bryn. I still can't find an id for #1 though if anyone else has an idea.
I think this ones a Marbled Beauty - the foreshortening in the first pic threw me at first.
Cheers,
Dave

Dytiscus Marginatus commonly known as the great diving beetle.Anyone know what this is? Scuttling across a pond. Nice green shell and swimming like Duncan Goodhew doing the breaststroke.
Sorry for the poor image - light was so harsh.

Thank you.Dytiscus Marginatus commonly known as the great diving beetle.
Anyone got a clue on these things can't find it in the book Chris mentioned though could be in the wrong section most likely. Only thing I know is it likes hiding especially behind grass blades...
Any ideas who is living on or in my house wall

That looks like the flower from a New zealand flax to me.
This looks like an overgrown misshaped vapourer moth caterpillar (probably not though)
I am new to this bug hunting so might need to use this thread a bit
What is this? (quite common I think but I have never looked at one closely before.....)
