Official Talk Leica thread

The AF is extremely quick, I could jog and capture Street scenes at f1.7 in focus :)

Might watch some YouTube reviews
Also watching closely to see what this new Zeiss FF fixed-lens camera is going to offer. :D

Yes I would be interested but I know the leica Q does exactly what I want. And I'm now abroad and have the Q with me :)

Nearly bought a Zeiss Loxia 50mm earlier, but figured I should really make the effort with my rather old Leica 50mm/2.8 Elmar collapsible. I love the actual handling and use of it, a superb smooth mechanical feel to it. Everything just so. But, I get less keepers that I like compared to my Zeiss' or Summarit 75mm and Elmarit 90mm. It's not that it's a poor lens, far from it. So I'm going to use it more often in the hope that I figure how to use well and that I'll fall in love with it.

Both of these taken at F4.

Hi, are you sure about the focal length of the Summarit? Could be 75 or 90. - (ZEISS have an 85 ... )

Sorry, for being pedantic ... :)

Hi, I went to the "Leica town" Wetzlar. - Originally, I wanted to open a thread A Leica-lover's Sentimental Journey to Wetzlar. But one should not overdo the irony ... --- :)

I bought the Nokton used, out of curiosity ... --- Hood and lens cap are as fiddly as with ZEISS lenses. IQ is good,
mechanics not. The focus ring is sticky. Getting it repaired is difficult, so I use the Nokton very rarely.

My other Voigtlländer lenses are faultless - up to now.

40mm focal length is rare nowadays. In the 70s is was very popular with rangefinders from MINOLTA, KONICA, ROLLEI ...

Leica Purists find 35mm is the optimal all-round focal length. However, the most widely used all-round focal length nowadays is 28mm due to the iPhone et al.

One should not be dogmatic. Use what you have, and what you like best!:)

Got back from holiday with my second Leica Q, and I'm reminded what makes it my favourite camera ever....

I shoot street, candidly, covertly, quickly.... for that I typically go for 1/2000th, auto-aperture (f1.7+) and auto-ISO

Sometimes I want to stop and take a shot with lots of depth of field - so f8, 1/125th, auto-ISO

I can switch between these settings even one-hand extremely quickly, even without the camera on - without having to look at some LCD screen or EVF to confirm settings.

This makes me so happy... and helps make it the best camera i've ever owned (over SL, M10, A9, X1D etc..)

A few holiday snaps with the Q

Hi, last Saturday I was in Wetzlar, and had a few words with a Q owner I met by the river taking pictures.

He had lots of Leica gear, but was extremely
happy with his Q,
just like you ... :)

(which rhymes ---)

Hi, from my Sentimental Journey to Wetzlar a walk along the river Lahn.

The area around Wetzlar has been an industrial center for ages. - The Celts made iron there. The rivers were early industrial infrastucture for the transport of bulk goods, as in Manchester/UK.

Hi, my Sentimental Journey to Wetzlar takes us to Leica World:

Passing the Ernst Leitz Hotel:

Inside the Leica World building the door on the right leads to a shop with Leica books and memorabilia (Leica cuff links ets.):

On the upper floor the earliest Leicas and the Leica camera history:

There is an exhibition of Leica photography history with many hand-signed pictures. Taking pictures there is forbidden (maybe because they want to sell the books downstairs) ...

Hi, I come to the end of my photonovela A Leica-lover's Sentimental Journey to Wetzlar.

Opposite the Ernst Leitz Hotel and the Leica World is the shop:

Concluding remarks: Was it worth the visit? For me, it was 70 mls one-way. And Wetzlar is also historically important, for literary scholars. (Goethe spent some time there, fell in love, and had to leave hastily.)

It takes a really great Leica enthusiast, to take a plane from England to Wetzlar. --- I would say (as they say in Michelin guides) it is worth a detour ... ---

The crop shows an onion-ring tendency. If this worries you ... ---

I bought the Nokton as a test-case, because I wanted to find out what a lens with Noctilux dimensions and weight is like in everyday use.

I do not like the bulk, so I use it rarely, (and I did not buy a Noctilux (up to now).)

It is the lens with the widest aperture in my portfolio. Of course, one might ask oneself how big the difference is to a 1,4 lens, due to sample variation in production ... ---

But considerations like this might spoil the attractiveness of the Nokton ...

All my 28s are good. - I know, this sounds a little like Alice's verdict after the race ... :) I like the 28 asph. best, because it is a typical Leica lens: compact and powerful ---

Hi, going through my lenses again, I rediscovered the VOIGTLÄNDER Skopar 4/21. When I tried it years ago, it showed pink corners on my M9. Tried again, I was very much surprised. No colour shift any more!

Several reasons, due to changes: New sensor, firmware 1.210, coding #11134 2,8/21. My results were obtained under these conditions.

The Skopar works perfectly with the M9 in every way!

I can recommend the Skopar with the M9 unreservedly, contrary to Ken Rockwell et alii ... --- Now, the question for me is: Has the ZEISS Biogon 4,5/21 also improved
in the changed context?

I shall find out soon ... ---

You're obviously getting good results with the voigtlander 21. I keep looking at the Zeiss Loxia 21mm but much like the 50mm I keep failing to justify either of them. The Voigt21 on a Sony has obvious colour shift on the edges otherwise I could see myself getting one of those sooner.

I've not been out much let alone snap anything with a Leica lens. However we did have our friendly female sparrowhawk drop in for lunch and nab a not quite quick enough sparrow. I shouted to Paul to get his camera, so he got some of the action. She was hanging around for a while on the fence one garden over so fetched my A6500 and put the old but quite good tele-elmar 135mm on it.

Hi, I have the 21 Loxia. - It is my favorite city traveling lens for the SONYs. - So, I do not use the 21 Skopar any more with the SONYs.

It works without color shift on the A7 and A7R2, if you use the SONY lens correction app. from SONY playmemories.

Hi, my best 35mm lens, the ZEISS Distagon 1,4/35 FLE on the M9.

L1013315-z35d-8c-tp_DxO Kopie.jpg

L1013317_DxO-z35d-8c-tp.jpg

Again, my judgement is based on my personal experience with my limited portfolio. I would not say the Distagon is the absolute best 35mm with M mount,
because I do not have the Summilux.

I have never seen a direct comparison between both lenses. If you value compactness, the Summilux is better than the Distagon (for you).

I am happy with my Distagon and my other 35s, and I do not plan any other purchases ... ---

Hi, my highly satisfying informal tests of the 21mm Skopar made me try out the ZEISS Biogon 4,5/21 on the M9 again (all f 4,5):

L1013882_DxO-z21-45-tp.jpg

L1013910_DxO-z21-45-tp.jpg

L1013917_DxO-z21-45-tp.jpg

This series left me undecided. Especially the last picture seems to show the infamous colour shift. On the other hand, this is crushed red limestone you can see in other areas of the picture ... ---
