The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Well, I know that, you know that..... but a lot of people seem happy with f/2.8 though :ROFLMAO:

I don't know about now but at one time some people were happy with f4 zooms and actually there was a market for f4 primes at one time... them being smaller, lighter and cheaper than the wider aperture ones.

Don't see many f/4 primes now and for good reason.

My personal opinion is that f/2.8 primes under 400mm are a waste of time as well.

The 300 f/2.8 seems pretty well regarded (and expensive).

At 200 and under I'd agree - I can't see a sub 200mm f/2.8 prime selling in sufficient quantity to make it viable (unless it's a specialist, such as 1:1 Macro), as we have a choice of f/2.8 zooms that cover that range.

The only reason I can think of, and not a good one, is that some people confuse maximum aperture with the ability of a given lens to present a useful image to the sensor. One of the most useful long focus lenses I ever owned was the Leica Elmar 90mm f/4, for both the 39mm screw mount and the M series bayonet mount.

Many alternative opinions are, of course, available.

Hence why I said "at one time."

And no, f2.8 primes are not a waste of time but I'll agree with you if you can find a f2.8 zoom of any focal range the size of a Sony 35mm f2.8.

I don't need you to agree with me. In my personal opinion only a lunatic carry's around multiple f/2.8 primes at wide to normal focal lengths when they are covered with a mid range f/2.8 zoom.

The reason the 35mm f/2.8 is no longer popular is because it is only f/2.8. Am sure it was great back donkeys years ago when it was launched and there was no real alternatives available. The 35 f/1.8 Sony and Samyang are very light weight and small as well, makes more sense to take one of those if you want a small 35mm and don't need to take anything else as f/2.8 is very limiting unless your donkeys years old yourself and stuck in your ways shooting everything at f/8. Might as well use a milk bottle.

It's all opinion and in my opinion there is a market for more compact kit and no, the f1.8 is not a replacement for the same reason. The mini G's are. On the zoom side there is the collapsible kit lens and it is lovely and compact but it's more limited aperture wise.

Your other comments. You should keep your mild personal slights to yourself or aim them at someone who gives a flying what you think but then you do tent to run off at the mouth a bit and come out with OTT drivel too often. IMO of course. I don't want to have to waste my time replying to garbage like this from you. Here's a bit of advice... Try and be funny instead of just funny.

A7 with 35mm f2.8 v 24-50mm f2.8 which I thought might be one of the smaller f2.8 zooms.

That could make a difference on a day out or holiday and I think Sony see a market for smaller kit as they have some small primes and the A7c range which I think is selling well for them.

I can see how some wont mind about extra bulk and weight and I can see how some might not want to be limited to a f2.5/f2.8 prime but I also have small f2 and even a f1.4 prime. I am happiest with primes. On the general point of bulk and weight even someone who tends to suffer from verbal incontinence might be able to at least perceive that some people might light compact and light kit. I hope so.

I certainly see your line of thinking. I recently bought a Fuji XF10 compact camera with a 28mm equivalent F2.8 lens as a pocket camera, I'm feeling I've made an error and thinking I should have gone for an e-mount body with the flexibility of either the 16mm F2.8 or 20mm F2.8 lenses since I could carry the body with either one and have the option of changing if needed. Ideally something a little smaller than the A7C with a couple of small F2.8 primes although perhaps unrealistic, I'd like something as a replacement for my very old RX1R.

Are you okay? You seem to be having some sort of hissy fit? Maybe save that nonsense for Facebook.

I didn’t make any personal comments about you, are you having a bad mental health day or something?

Feel free to put me on ignore.

I think everyone can calm down, we're too friendly a community for this nastiness. And after all, it's Friday!

Not really a hissy fit. It's just today I got a bit irritated with you. I've often thought you go needlessly over the top way too often with your rhetoric and rants and I usually just chuckle, but not today.

Mental health isn't really something to joke about or make fun over and I've been honest about my issues (stress and depression). The fact that you'd make a comment like this does actually make me feel better as it just reinforces my belief that on my worst day I'm a better man than you.

How about you just grow up a bit and then I wont have to ignore you.

Point taken but on the other hand... Just sometimes a little friction can take the heat out of an issue. I'm not sure I need to calm down but I'll have a cuppa. That's my commitment. Hopefully f2.8 can commit to turning the bombast dial down from 10 to 8 and being the better man.

So pleased to see this working again. But it was shut last time I went.

A7 and TTArtisan 50mm f2. Dull flat day.

My ticket.

My carriage.

PS.
It was a windy day. See the waves and the little water fall running off the cliff in the distance?

One of my favourites but lost out on the title in another thread.

A7 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 which I sold. Silly me.

She's home on Tuesday. She went to Thailand for 6 months to look after her mam, 6 months turned into 9 for unforeseen reasons. I couldn't go due to ongoing legal issues with family. Really like this following one but someone in the room seems to have a touch of OCD. Can't imagine who.

A7 and Sony 35mm f2.8.

"Aren't you ready yet?"
"Shut up."

Last one A7 and TTArtisan 50mm f2.

Bet you both can't wait! Are you taking her out for food or something? Or is she going to give you some DIY to do around the house? :) :ROFLMAO:

My shots above were with the 40/1.2 :)

Honestly what a load of self entitled nonsense.

You’re right, I don’t like your internet persona, but I never personally attacked you although you have done that to me.

You’re being extremely childish but then it’s not exactly the first time.

DIY? All done. You don't marry an obsessive to wait for DIY to get done. First couple of days she'll be too tired as it's a loooong flight and you're lucky to get any sleep. After that we have to have a talk and make our wills as neither of us has one and recent family troubles have convinced us that we need them and we do go out a lot as a couple so if anything happens it could happen to us both. After that we'll have some nice days out and there's an ever growing list of people to take out for a meal or to have round for a meal. People who've been really good in difficult times.

I'll think about the 40mm but I'm sure you know what I'm like. I'll end up buying it and keeping the 35 and 50.

Self entitled. Look in the mirror.

Look. We're not in a pub we're on a forum and if you and I carry on one or both of us is getting banned. It's up to you. I don't like how you post at times but usually I live with it. Recently much less so. Just keep your comments to yourself where I'm concerned and we can coexist without either of us getting banned.

I’ve just posted a wanted ad for an A7C II if anyone is looking to part with one.

I’d also consider the original A7C or even the A7CR if the price was tempting.

This should please some folk

The Viltrox 16mm 1.8 gets really good reviews, £450 direct from Viltrox. Think the Sony will be a bit more than that, bit lighter and smaller probably.

Yeah I'm not sure about that one, but many have been wanting more tele options from Sony.

After a long gap in taking photos, I beleive im gradually coming back..

Long standing Canon user, I purchased a Sony A7C ii a few months ago and slowly building up some lenses.

Here's one taken on a Sigma 20mm F1.4, purchased on this site.

Hopefully i'll keep this setup for a little longer and continue with the Sony..

400-800 is interesting. I've been using my 200-600 with 1.4x pretty much permanently attached, so taking it off recently has been a breath of fresh air. Be interesting to see how the 400-800 performs vs the sigma 500 f5.6, and I mean that both optically and weight/size/handling.

I swapped my 200-600mm for the Sigma 500mm. Haven't use it a huge lot but definitely a lot nicer to carry around and use in general. The 500mm is also a fair bit sharper especially noticeable on the A7RV.
I needed larger bags for the 200-600mm, the 500mm actually even fits in the PD sling 10l even if it's a tight fit.
Don't think I'd go back to 200-600mm or a lens that size but still interested in the 300GM if I can eventually find one at a good price.
