The Official Fuji X Pro 1 Thread

Tha that's what I thought the response was going to be, it's a real shame though as I find the shutter dial awkward to operate.

I have been using the EV dial but I'd rather shoot manual as it is much more reliable especially on bright days. I'll keep my fingers crossed for an unlikely firmware update.

Other than compatibility with future lens releases, I'd be very surprised if Fujifilm give the XP1 any more features

I agree, it's just a shame that a simple update would enable a feature which is available on other Fuji x cameras.

The problem is that it's an old camera now, Fujifilm doesn't have limitless resources to throw around, it may sound like a simple update, but it would still require coding, testing, releasing etc, Fujifilm have had the OCCASIONAL issue with FW already (most recently with the XT1, where they had to pull the FW and reissue it later)

There's also bound to be issues caused by bad luck (the OCCASIONAL bricked camera isnt unheard of) and many XP1s are still inside warranty, placing a further drain on their resources.

Fujifilm does give us FW for free (and maybe that's the problem...)

There's quite a few people on the internet asking/complaining that their X-Pro2 should have XYZ feature, or having issues, plus if the rumours are true the X-T2 is due soon...

The XP1 is what it is now, I'm not surprised that Fujifilm wish to focus their attention to their current and upcoming products. FWIW... Classic Chrome, coloured focus peaking, spot metering where ever the focus box is, are all things I'd love to see on my XP1. But it's not to be.

I'm not trying to suggest that YOU'RE complaining, but speaking generically, I think the Fuji user base needs to accept that FOC "Kaizen" can't last forever!

It could be worse... IIRC.... X100S users never got a single FW update at all, despite all the other X-Trans II bodies basically ending up with most of the XT1 features

I know that some of you have been following my X-Pro1 love story,

But seeing as this week, we went over 10,000 words I thought it time post a overview

Unless someone can tell me otherwise (and please do), I think that I've now created one of the (if not simply 'the') largest opinion* based X-Pro1 articles on the internet.

(*there's facts and stuff in there too and of course many things are also true of the later X cameras!!)

I remain as passionate and enthusiastic about the X-Pro1 as I always, I know it's neither the newest or best camera out there, but I sincerely believe it's a perfectly valid photography solution, offering a signature look to it files, and in usage, the body responds well to be treated like a film camera.

So, 10258 words and counting... and I've yet to run out of ideas to write about
smile.png

So here's a overview:

Part 1:
https://adambonndotc...ujifilm-x-pro1/

When you fall for a camera, does it always work out how you think?
"Boy meets camera, lives happily ever, right? WRONG! But how wrong? And can two wrongs make a right?"

Part2:
https://adambonn.com...x-pro1/finally/

When you dream that a camera will be everything you hoped, how will you react when it isn't?
"This is the part where I moan, complain and moan some more about the laggy EVF, the woefully inaccurate OVF experience, the glacier slow AF"

Part3:
https://adambonn.com...pro1/xp1-three/

When you start to miss imperfection.
"The second time around the X-Pro1 became so very, very much more than eye candy to me. I finally figured out how to use it, I fell in love with it holistically"

Part4:
https://adambonn.com...-pro1/xp1-four/

When you (well I !!) start to realise it's the way that files look that's important
" it was enough to draw me in - to forgive the camera its quirks and foibles and want to get the best from it."

Part5:
https://adambonn.com...-pro1/xp1-five/

When you try to define just exactly what it is that you love about the look of an image
" IN MY OPINION and TOO MY EYE the X-Pro1 has a signature to its images, a look that I love very much."

Part6:
https://adambonn.com...x-pro1/xp1-six/

When you understand how over come physical limitations, via self improvement
"as you can see (and perhaps agree) by taking back control of focus from the shutter button, we still can utilize the benefits of AF"

Part7:
https://adambonn.com...pro1/xp1-seven/

When you understand that blind love of a camera is only a personal view point and that's important
"when things get personal, then people tend to bring their A game, and a strong A game can accomplish anything"

Part8:
https://adambonn.com...pro1/xp1-eight/

When you start to look at what bits and bobs you can add on to your camera
"they add to the camera, and they enrich the overall ownership experience"

Part9:
https://adambonn.com...-pro1/xp1-nine/

When you realise that companies other than the OEM can offer valid items for your camera
"I’m going to say that if you’re getting a genuine benefit"

Part10:
https://adambonn.com...x-pro1/xp1-ten/

When you have a good look at your camera's files and find your own path
"Why would I want to truncate my potential output by dismissing any of the available options"

these are making fab used bargains now ... a lot of firmware updates have gone by is the af adequate for portits/candids at weddings for a 2nd shooter?

IMO no. You have enough money, get the X pro 2 or an XT1.;)

As per the other thread, depends on budget.

I would say that the XPro1 is definitely not the right camera to give an inexperienced second shooter at a wedding.

I'd say the opposite, its the ideal camera to learn on as you learn to do things the right way rather than relying on loads of different auto modes and of course to get him going it can be put into program mode if needed or just aperture mode with auto ISO

Why would they learn on auto modes on other cameras though? The XP1 has quirks that can create problems in a fast paced environment and will cause frustration imo.

You don't learn to use a camera while shooting a wedding!

Have read that the af is very slow on these. How does it compare to the a7r?

I can't answer, I've never shot a a7r

But with the XP1 it's very light and lens dependant, in very good light with one of the faster focusing lenses, the XP1 is really quite snappy IMO

I tend to use mine with BBF

It's easy, easy like Sunday morning...

So easy writing about a camera that I enjoy as much as the X-Pro1!!

And speaking of Sunday morning, let's have part 12 of my little* missive

http://adambonn.com/my-love-affair-with-the-fujifilm-x-pro1/xp1-twelve/

Today we take a look at maximising DR in Jpegs, by using the highlight and shadow settings

Enjoy!

*if you've read the whole thing (...) that's now over 12,000 words

"I've always thought comparisons were useless and ugly. It is a short cut to thinking"
(Jim Morrison 1968)

In Part 14 of my Fuji X-Pro1 story it's time to continue our look at the Fuji X / Leica M comparison (part 2 of 2)

Last time we took a look at the physical differences between rangefinders and mirrorless cameras, but what about the emotive differences? Surely Fujifilm have nothing in the way of brand cachet that Leica have, right?

Wrong!

In fact, whatever Fuji body you shoot, I'm rather hoping this piece makes you hold your head high and go out and make some superb photographers

It's Sunday!

So that should mean that it's time for part 15 of the X-Pro1 story!

And of course it does!!

This week we ask, so we're so used to hearing about what it's NOT for, but what's the X-Pro1 actually for?

Enjoy!

http://adambonn.com/my-love-affair-with-the-fujifilm-x-pro1/xp1-fifteen/

Great story, like you, I had an XP1 and didn't realise how good it was till I sold it, bought another.....and sold that. Now on my third, bought new and manufactured 3rd quarter of 2015.
I also have an XT1 and Nikon D750, but getting the urge to sell it to spend more time with my XT1.
Can't afford them all.

Thanks Allan,

I'm actually toying with selling my XT1 to buy more XF glass!

OK! As well as my XP1 story that I tell you about each week :)

My website does have other stuff on it :)

So here's a blog post I made, copied/pasted here for your (hopeful) enjoyment!

I couldn't help but notice that Leica used Porto for the street shooting promo video that they made for their new M-D (the camera with no screen!)

As I live in Porto, I couldn't resist making a blog post about the street scenes here, that I see here, but with a Fuji!!

All shot with the X-Pro1, knowing me... all with the XF35 as well, but I suspect the first shot is with the XF60

Enjoy!

You can read this story on my site here

http://adambonn.com/2016/05/03/porto-people-street-scenes/

And see all my current stories/topics/etc here

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My adopted home city of Porto (in Portugal) is so beautiful and photogenic, that even Leica send photographers here to shoot.

I may live here, but I don’t have a Leica… But it’s not problem, because I have a Fuji! (3 in fact!!)

If the people make a place, and in turn the place makes the people, then what sort of pictures can you capture?

Well Leica have just released a new model M. No don't worry, here's not the place to find out about it, you can do that at their website. But I cannot tell a lie, I did watch their promotional video...

...for one simple reason, they sent a trio of 'Togs to Porto.

So the mighty Leica deem Porto worthy of flying in photographers to capture street scenes here... Cool! But for me, when I want to do that, I just leave the house!

So armed with a "mere" (sic) Fujifilm, let's take a bus ride (sorry I can't spring for a plane) into town and see what we can see!

“The Purposeful Explorer"

Porto rolls down the valley into the Douro river, criss-crossed by ancient side streets. Like any popular tourist destination, it pays to explore away from the main areas, to see and feel as much as possible. Who knows... maybe you'll be so enamoured with a place that you'll end up living somewhere new!

Street Cards: A Serious Matter by Adam Bonn, on Flickr
“Street Cards: A Serious Matter"

Wander away from the main streets and you'll see local life flourish. Groups playing card games, this is clearly a serious business!

The Attraction & Fear of Nice Things by Adam Bonn, on Flickr
“The Attraction & Fear of Nice Things"

Porto has many shops, a lot of them are not 'chain' stores, but independent places selling treats and delicacies. Meats, cakes, Port, wine, coffee... Nice things! You should definitely treat yourself, well if you're allowed in that is!

A Forgotten World by Adam Bonn, on Flickr
"A Forgotten World"

To my eye at least, Porto offers the chance to see people go about their lives, in surroundings that have not really changed for a great number of years. This, too me, has a special charm that drives home the notion that things do change, but they really don't.

It's wonderful that a company such as Leica acknowledges Porto* as a destination that demands photography, if you visit the city, I guarantee you'll see the sights that those Leica photographers did, you'll love them and photograph them, and you should start there.

But if you then venture just a few hundred meters away from those famous places, you'll see the views from a slightly less well trodden (but no less authentic) path.

The Timeless Line by Adam Bonn, on Flickr

Whatever camera you shoot (and no matter who's picking up your travel costs) you'll find a little spark of visual magic on these streets.

Happy travels, where ever you go

(*Yes, I'm aware of Leica's manufacturing connection to Portugal!)

I just want to post a quick thanks for your X Pro-1 story.
I bought an X Pro 1, the 35mm 1.4, and the 18mm f2, and have to admit, although I enjoy using it, it was never going to replace my D700/D750 kit
However, I have kept the Fuji as I love what it produces , especially with the 35 1.4 attached.
I have read your blog, and tried some of the settings/techniques you have talked about, and I have to say it has re-ignited my passion for the Fuji.
It's still never going to replace my Nikon gear, but as a travel / walkaround camera I love it all over again.
So thanks Adam, I'm glad you wrote your blog.
Cheers,
Gary.
